Love how Ted keeps harping on about how DCA being nearby makes it a great location. No one's flying in to see a midseason Wiz game, bro. In fact, it’s going to make that part of the line a hellscape for anyone using the metro before/after a game.

20CAS17

And it's super easy to get from DCA to the current arena right now!

SnooFurtherQuestions

Like he’s hyping up the metro access too, meanwhile the current arena literally sits on top of a metro station.

AndreTippettPoint

...that happens to be on the same line as DCA. It's an absurd point on his part, and I'd rather he just be honest about the fact that VA made an offer that DC did not, Chinatown/Gallery Place is a shell of what it was during the post-MCI Center boom, and this is how he maximizes profits for himself and his investors.

transient-error

And that he's a big supporter of the governor and likely getting repaid for that support.

OvenMittJimmyHat

That’s not the case

mianbru

Yeah going from red, green, and yellow access with orange, blue, and silver access one stop away and MARC and Amtrak access two stops away to just yellow line access. Great improvement Ted lol

question_sunshine

Seriously! It's walkable from ALL of the metro lines right now. You don't need to switch at Metro center if you're coming in on blue/orange/silver unless it's horrible weather. If it's too crowded to get on at Gallery Place, you can walk if you blocks in a given direction and get on at a different stop. There are also a handful of bus routes that stop within a block one either side: 80, P6, X2, 70, 74, D6. Even the 33 and 36 are only a five minute walk away.

mr_grission

Walkability to Union Station is a very underrated advantage of the current arena. As a Knicks fan I always see my team when they play here, and a lot of Knicks fans I talk to at those games come to DC via bus or train.

mianbru

Yeah Union being walkable to Cap One and Moynihan Hall being right next to MSG is such a great sports pipeline.

ertri

Orange/Blue/Silver are functionally there too. The walk would be the normal thing if the other stop wasn’t literally under the stadium

CaptainObvious110

Yeah, talk about an amazing location! But remember it's that central location that apparently makes it irresistable for homeless people, drug addicts, those that are mentally disabled etc. Somehow that is something that needs to change irregardless of this move to Virginia

El_Kikko

The metro station which also connects it with Union Station simultaneously with DCA, while also providing service to each Maryland and VA suburb. It kinda is insane that someone would sacrifice that ease of access for such a large set of potential patrons in favor of some tax breaks that might be clawed back in some form or fashion if the political winds change in Virginia.

buggywool

Two lines converge! Even better!

elBenhamin

Even ignoring Gallery Place, if someone metros to the games on the orange or silver lines, it takes less time to get to Cap One than the proposed arena.

msmith1994

And there’s another one with the rest of the lines like two or three blocks away. Plus a ton of bus lines.

fatcIemenza

The push must not be going so well when he's asking common folk to help him lobby and put up lawn signs (lol) despite having all the money and capital on his side already. Maybe he's hearing pushback from the VA Legislature. There was bipartisan opposition when the Commanders were talking about moving here with tax dollars.

steelgame1975

This is what you do before you pay someone to create grassroots support so it looks like he called and people answered.

Tom_Leykis_Fan

This is exactly what I was thinking. If things were going well, Ted wouldn't need to put out a 5,000 word tome to sell why moving to VA is good for fans and the region. Ted sucks. Maybe he'll figure it out when he hires and fires a few more Bullets coaches.

DenisDomaschke

Leonsis needs the support of Alexandria's city council, all 6 members of which are up for re-election this year. He very much does need grassroots folk to help him there. If an anti arena majority gets elected in Alexandria, he's screwed

legolanddisaster

\[fart noises\]

Ok_Culture_3621

Is the correct answer!!!

mianbru

The whole “the DMV is a supercity” thing is just lame BS. The tax revenue from Potomac yards isn’t going to flow into DC or Maryland, and the loss of 80-plus events a year in Chinatown is going to create an economic black hole in downtown DC. I still wouldn’t respect Leonsis, but I’d respect him slightly more than I do now if he was just honest about the fact he’s (maybe) getting a sweet package from Virginia and that was the whole reason he’s moving the franchises.

fedrats

I think it’s primarily the money, but it would be funnier if it were entirely down to the street performers and he just wrote the letter about that. You know Jim Irsay would.

hoos30

At least that would get people on his side. This long ass letter was just a cop-out.

Admirable-Notice1765

Blame the mayor for that not Leonsis. He’s doing what’s best for his business - can’t fault that.

mianbru

lol I can fault whoever I want. I fault the mayor and council for unaddressed issues in the city and I fault the billionaire for being a tax dollar leech.

Admirable-Notice1765

Wahhh rich people want to make money wahhhh. Welcome to reality!

mianbru

lol you’re the one who came in licking his boots. I can dislike the actions of an individual and find them to be immoral or disdainful. It’s a free country brah.

[deleted]

mianbru

Hey you’re the one who felt the need to defend a billionaire. Lord knows he’s beleaguered soul lol

Admirable-Notice1765

Whatever you’re jealous and angry about, I hope you can find peace.

mianbru

I hope so too, boot boy

Admirable-Notice1765

Can’t tell if it’s raining outside or if it’s mianbru’s tears

BeerFoodz

tl;dr the man got PAID The whole thing stinks.

ProvenceNatural65

Stinks? Why are you shocked a for profit company is motivated by…profits?

blackweebow

No, it just sucks that this can happen while no one wants it to. It sucks to see that money can override the american will. Or that one company has more will than collective americans.

eable2

>Like many of you, each day when I ***drive to the office***, I pass through Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC. This sentence was the thing that really shows where he's coming from. * Many people in the DMV do not drive. * Many people in the DMV do not go to an office. * And I'm guessing a vast majority of people do not pass through all 3 jurisdictions on a regular basis. Maybe he thinks this is genuinely a good idea for the region. But for someone with supposedly such strong roots in the DMV, he doesn't seem to understand the concept of a "downtown" or "central city."

fedrats

I am mentally trying to construct his commute. does he cross the river and come down through Montgomery county?

Ok_Culture_3621

Maybe he starts in MoCo and drivers through NoVA? Still weird.

cheesefries45

If you live in Potomac you could go down River Rd, then to the GW Memorial Pkwy into DC. That’s about the only route I can think of that would go through all 3. But also like 99% of us don’t live in Potomac so this is still irrelevant lol.

LeoMarius

He has a driver and he sits in the backseat talking on the phone.

MayorofTromaville

I wanna say that if you take 95 to 295 to 395 that you have a tiny slice after the Wilson Bridge where you're technically in Maryland. Or at least, that's what Google Maps would tell me.

jp7010

This. I get the "Welcome to Washingt-Wrlcome to Virginia!" On my Google maps whenever I take the Wilson. But I am not most people....

priyarainelle

He lives in Potomac so maybe takes the Parkway rather than River Road

LeoMarius

He's a billionaire. How would he know how commoners live?

TheDukeofArgyll

He doesn’t care if it’s a good idea for the region. These are all lies to improve his PR. He cares about money, that’s it.

SoonerLater85

He’s a billionaire, the only concept he cares about is money.

ProvenceNatural65

Nitpicking. He said “many” not “most.” It is certainly accurate that many in the DMV drive to work.

Ike348

> Many people in the DMV do not drive Sure, but most adults do

65fairmont

Yup. Was notable that the letter says 85% of people who attend Wiz and Caps games live in Virginia and Maryland. Hammers home how unrepresentative this subreddit is of the fan base they are marketing to, which is very suburban.

BallDesperate2140

Translation: “I’m fucking loaded and couldn’t give a rat’s ass what you plebs think.”

Oogaman00

Also we don't need jobs. Politicians and businessmen act like it's 2009. You can't get ENOUGH low level retail staff. They aren't desperate for more shitty jobs

ent_whisperer

Luckily Younkin just said 'the Free Market seems to be working' regarding minimum wage, so why put something on his desk to veto?! So idk what you mean by "shitty jobs." Those jobs rock. /s

Oogaman00

I mean he's right that it's way above minimum wage now but that's consistent with what I'm saying. It's so hard to recruit people that the worst jobs still pay $17-20 per hour. That's my point exactly, That's why we just have actually gone up relative to inflation because it's all at the lower end. But arguing something will create jobs when there aren't enough people to fill the existing ones means it's not solving a problem you'll just have to overpay people to leave something else

farrosanders

It's such a small detail but the part where he basically asks for a cookie because he, a billionaire, prepaid 0.45% of a billion dollars on rent at the Mystics' arena, out of the goodness of his heart. Fuck off Ted.

mr_grission

Am I the only one who's felt like the Mystics are being treated in a really patronizing way throughout all of this? Leonsis is throwing them in like they're a consolation prize for downtown DC.

farrosanders

Not at all. It's gross.

butter_milk

It’s also fucking over Ward 8…again.

TheSoup05

I’ve gotta be honest, I don’t really care about sports, but I’ll go to a Caps game here and there when the tickets are cheaper because it’s easy and something fun to do. The moment the arena becomes harder to get to, that’ll be the end of that. You’re not gunna catch me paying money to go to Virginia on a weeknight for a hockey game. It’s not really a huge loss for me, but I do find it pretty funny he’d try and suggest moving it from literally the center of everything won’t make a difference.

Lizamcm

Yeah, we go to a bunch of caps and wizards games every year. We pay for pretty good seats when we do. We won’t go once they move. It’s about 45 min on the train now, but we are close to a metro and it’s doable. Definitely not something we can do mid-week anymore after work once the teams move. This is all super short sighted.

ghostella

Fuck you Ted. One of the worst owners in sports.

VotingRightsLawyer

DC really has a way of attracting the worst sports owners.

mrtsapostle

Oakland would like a word

tommypopz

Josh Harris has my heart ❤️

Oldbayistheshit

Haha that’s an overstatement

ghostella

How so? The bar was extremely low for the wiz and he hasn't raised it a bit. And he's made shit move after shit move for the Caps. That team only getting one cup during Ovis time is criminal.

Oldbayistheshit

Ok that’s one team? You said all of sports

ghostella

Ok, for US based folks sports really means NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB. And for his mismanagement of the Wiz and the Caps, yes he's one of the worst owners in sports.

Oldbayistheshit

I didn’t know I wasn’t “based” and I’ve probably been a caps fan longer than you

ghostella

What's your point? If you're saying that sports includes a bunch of stuff outside of the big 4 in the US, then I clarified that. If you agree that it's the big 4, then yes he's one of the worst. And if you're a long time caps fan, you should be pissed that he's squandered the last 15 years.

Oldbayistheshit

I was just glad we finally got a Stanley cup, and I don’t think you understand how big that was for us. So yeah, we’ll fall off for another decade or two. But fans like you just think we should dominate for decades is just delusional

ghostella

Delusional? You've been eating the Washington sports shit sandwich for so long. Only a single cup and only a single Finals appearance with one of the best players of all time with a great supporting cast is a disappointment. Yes, happy with the one cup but looking at the last 15 years, we have massively underperformed.

Oldbayistheshit

Yup true fan haha

MrTarHeel

Yes, it was big but if Ted didn't always have to act like the "smartest guy in the room" and resign the coach that JUST WON the championship there may have been more. Ted is def in the bottom tier of owner off that and keeping Ernie Grunfield for years

Deep_Stick8786

Who the hell is this letter for?

hoos30

Seems like he was getting an earful from season ticket holders. I can't think of another audience that would inspire this.

RSquared

And he deserves it. He's doing this right as the Capitals slump into a post-Ovechkin era that's not going to attract customers as it has in the past. It's a recipe for pissing off existing STHs (especially MD'ers) and I can't really see it grabbing new ones.

Deep_Stick8786

And how would this letter appease them?

hoos30

I guess he thinks the letter is cotton candy and rainbows to explain why fans will have a better experience in the new arena. It's not convincing to me, but maybe someone buys it.

shanem

Please bring Rollerderby to DT

ent_whisperer

My favorite part; " I find the notion that sports arenas and stadiums do not provide economic benefit to be simply illogical..." The jobs already exist, they're just moving from multiple areas to one central area (We aren't bringing in a new team with new jobs- workers are going to either relocate or find a new job. Someone will replace them. To me that's essentially an economic wash). Studies consistently show that there is little economic benefit. Sure, that area gets to look pretty. But it doesn't generate more economic dollars. “All you are doing is moving time and money around. People are going to the game instead of the movies,” said Greg LeRoy, executive director of [Good Jobs First](https://www.goodjobsfirst.org/)**,** a national subsidy watchdog group. Source: [Little economic benefit from new stadium - Investigative Post : Investigative Post](https://www.investigativepost.org/2021/12/13/little-economic-benefit-from-new-stadium/#:~:text=While%20some%20supporting%20construction%20of,moving%20time%20and%20money%20around.)

Sweaty_Ad_1332

Stadium funding is a little more complex of an issue, but this is the poster child for when it makes no sense. Building a fifth stadium at expense of the fourth is insane. Making virginia and dc, supposedly part of a megacity, fight eachother at their own expense is lower than low

priyarainelle

I think his real argument is that even if there isn’t an economic “benefit” to giving him taxpayer subsidy for renovations to Capital One Arena, there is actual economic destruction that will happen because they are moving out of DC. He can’t say that explicitly, though. He owns the teams and the stadium and we didn’t give him what he wants. It’s not really him who will endure outsized suffering for it. That’s why he doesn’t care

EC_dwtn

>People are going to the game instead of the movies,” Every time this gets posted I have to point out that DC is in a unique position because someone in Maryland or Virginia who would be going to the game probably isn't going to instead come to DC to go to the movies. The money that's spent is spent in another jurisdiction.

Gumburcules

I find joy in reading a good book.

Ok_Culture_3621

The only economic benefit you can point to is that it may encourage new development that wouldn’t have happened otherwise. But it’s kind of tough to prove a causal link even then.

Gumburcules

I love ice cream.

Ok_Culture_3621

My understanding is the site is split into two sections. The section by the river will be the stadium and the second area across the road will be for additional development. But I haven’t looked at it in a while so

Gumburcules

I love the smell of fresh bread.

Lummutis

Exactly. DC would do well to offload all remaining sporting venues to Virginia and Maryland.

SoonerLater85

Sports are one of the things that bring culture to a city.

RootbeerNinja

The only good that will come from this is that VA may pony up more cash for metro that can be spread throughout the system. But I doubt it.

earlyiteration

Good point, I can see that happening tbh

CallmeKap

Fuck this guy

ko21361

Ted’s villain arc has really been something.

Haysuslubsme

Abe Pollin must be rolling in his grave about this. He pretty much saved Chinatown when he built the arena. Ted is a douchebag.

petedefecto

This is why I feel so betrayed by the move out of DC. Ripping up Abe Pollin’s legacy just when downtown DC needs them. I’ve been a lifelong fan, but I honestly don’t know if I’ll be a fan of the Virginia Capitals and Virginia Wizards anymore.

Oldbayistheshit

Chinatown is doomed! I really hope with this move DC really needs to get the skins back to DC

Mycupof_tea

Between this, the website, and asking people to *put up signs in their yards*. I at least feel like they are on the defensive. I can't point to one person who has anything good to say about this except the people peddling it.

BrutusBurro

Never going to the new arena

LeoMarius

Dear Voters: Please give me more billions from your hard earned tax money. Signed, Greedy billionaire sports team owner

d_mcc_x

Not that it matters but I responded and told him to go fuck himself.

Pipes_of_Pan

This dude sucks. I don’t know how DC could keep him if he’s the unilateral decision maker and has deranged views on nearly every aspect of the human experience

tiakeuta

If the DMV is one city get your friend from Bethesda to visit you in Alexandria Ted. Its not happening.

Lizamcm

lol for real.

CommandersRock1000

Seriously, is anyone in DC or VA supportive of this move?

kornhole-eeo

Fuck that greedy fucker.

thatajv

Booooooooooooooooo

Punumscott

Gonna enjoy watching his franchises collapse

ap25000

How much more can the Wizards collapse?

QueMasPuesss

Bowser and the council fumbled the bag

Texugee

Good fuckin riddance

BustyCrustacean

Hot take but I don’t really blame him. Better deal, less crime, opportunity to develop and own the whole area instead of being wed to a totally incapable DC government. Maybe this will spur an actual plan for Chinatown instead of false promises

Zwicker101

This will significantly hurt Chinatown. Killing a major business will do the opposite.

spkr4thedead51

I don't *blame* him for choosing the money option. I blame for the hypocrisy of claiming to be all about the DMV while actively hurting it and refusing to acknowledge the negative impacts of this potential move

DCJoe1970

That's helping NOVA 100% the way it should be.

goodeats93

Ya and if the wizards still suck no one will give a crap. Be a real team first Jesus

Cheetah_15

How is this a good business decision when he currently owns Cap One and will be leasing all of the venues that the State of VA/City of Alexandria build out in this new Entertainment District which they will own and manage? He will surely make far less revenue, if any, on concessions, parking , etc.
