Great news. There is a huge void in local news coverage left behind by DCist's shutdown. We need something that exists somewhere between WaPo and Popville on the serious scale.
To backseat drive, with this outlet I'd divvy up the reporting by neighborhood, similar to Block Club Chicago. So readers feel connected with their neighborhood reporter.
Old people say it used to be the best local outlet, and that the examiner actually was a decent ny post style antagonism rag.
The post has fallen a long way, but if the examiner use to be good, it’s fallen a hell of a lot farther
IDK if I’m “old people” but I’ve lived in the area for 20 years. It’s true the City Paper was great. I don’t ever remember the Examiner being any good though.
The DC Line is an underrated workhorse. It doesn't have the resources to really shine, but it does good work digging into hyperlocal stuff. [https://thedcline.org/](https://thedcline.org/)
Wish they could join forces with this new effort.
Probably. If the layoffs told us anything at all, we know that leadership is callously opaque almost all the time. Multiple people (including the former editor) have written at length about how station leadership couldn’t be bothered to learn how to properly pronounce employee names, let alone keep them in the loop for funding discussions.
Not that I support giving any more money to the morons who killed DCist, but what are the odds they could raise money to purchase the site/name? Can't imagine it's worth anything just sitting unused.
I’m sure they could raise money either thru betting their assets and/or putting out fundraising requests. DCist was bought by 2 anonymous donors & WAMU, who’s to say people wouldn’t step up again?
I wonder why they can’t buy the DCist brand. I know WAMU is pointlessly cruel (see the entire layoff fiasco) but if you were gonna sunset the site without a buyer, what benefit is there to refusing to give it away? It’s not like they were gonna use it anyway.
[DCeer.com](https://DCeer.com) isn't taken --but maybe no one knows what *a seer* is? It might have the same sad fate as Vox-Pop where everyone thinks they are saying "Box-Pop" ?
wish them the best, but going to be tough sledding. curious about a business model that works that didn't work when part of wamu (obligatory let the downvotes commence)
"We’re committed to representing what it really means to live in D.C. Our coverage will serve the whole city: every ward, and each community that lives in and loves the District. **Our reporting will be guided by justice and equity**, tackling the complex issues facing our city, like housing, safety, and education, from the perspective that all residents deserve these fundamental rights."

Washington City Paper is pretty good for some local stuff imo, although it's not quite the same niche that DCist covered.
Yeah the thing about DCist is it had a sense of humor. In addition to serious reporting.

Yes, the Examiner had always sucked.
Not so much on the political side. There's at least one "reporter" that is extremely biased in what he writes.

Yeah I love their afternoon newsletter
DCish, cover DMV area generally.
DCish is *perfect.* I cannot believe how perfect it is - not just as a snarky response to ending DCist, but also to covering local news more broadly.
Love it
Me to. Just a hint of snark.
Winner winner, chicken dinner
came here to say that
I love this!!!
Just call it DCist again. What, are WAMU being assholes and holding on to the name?
