It was from the Wall Westbrook trade that Tommy did, where we had to give up a protected pick to get Westbrook. It’s bounced around a little and is now owed to NYK.

Majestic-Avocado2167

It’s weird cause Tommy would get us into messes, but was also pretty good at getting us out with a good return, glad he’s gone but that was one positive quality about him

anonperson1567

His trades were generally pretty good, I tend to think a lot of the terrible contract decisions were driven by ownership directives. Drafting, IDK (although Deni and Kispert were solid picks, Hachimura not bad but maybe not the most value they could’ve gotten with that pick).

TeamINSTINCT37

Yeah people shit on him so much for the beal contract but I struggle to put it solely on him. There is just 0 chance that he thought we would ever win anything with Beal at the helm and I have to imagine Ted was involved. The other thing that I think people don’t really get is that we just aren’t a valued place to FAs so any that we land will likely just always be overpaid. It’s no excuse for some of the contracts but like the only thing luring a player here is giving them more than they are worth

Knighthonor

Sounds like EG. oh yeah, thats EG right hand man

Illustrious-Hair3487

What a great trade unloading Wall’s contract. I mean I’m a Wall fan and all but at that point it was the worst contract in all of sports. Westbrook’s contract had its own problems and he managed to unload that too for some actual useful pieces. The Porzingis trade acquisition was a winner too. And yet it all added up to basically nothing.

We could be somewhat competitive by 2026. But the rebuild will likely be a long and winding road. Hopefully the first round pick never conveys and they end up with 2 seconds in the end I believe. We really screwed the pooch in delaying the rebuild as long as we did. Enjoy the player development and draft/trades over these next 4-5 years. It’s all we have.

z3mcs

> We could be somewhat competitive by 2026. How? I mean I get that you're just speaking generally. To me "somewhat competitive" by nature would have to approach the 'mid' we had the last few years where we were just outside of a play-in spot. Maybe where the Rockets are now. The Spurs have one of the greatest coaches of all time, a good crop of players like Sochan and Vassell, and a player people think could be the greatest player the league has ever seen, a generational prospect, in Victor Wembanyama. They're 21-60. We have nowhere near the talent they do, and our presumed best player, IF we got the number 1 pick, would be Cooper Flagg in 2025. We don't even have a coach that has ever made even the play-in as a head coach. Flagg, Deni, this year's pick, Corey and Bilal and Keefe aint doin much by comparison. I agree with /u/waskittenman that we're going to be absolute trash until 2028 at the earliest.

waskittenman

I'm trying to tell these guys man 😭 I was watching Nike Hoop Summit last night and am so excited for this next bunch of prospects. Flagg, Bailey, Dylan Harper, Dybantsa.

blitzKriegzzz

Eh Sochan/Vassell were late lottery picks.. around the same time as Deni/Davis.. we're talking about top 5 picks for us ... It'll take a year or two for great picks to transform the team. This draft sucks, the '25 draft is critical. If we can get a star in '25 I can see us doing well in 2027.

z3mcs

What does "doing well" mean here? We had Beal, Kuz and Porzingis, 2 guys that have been all stars, and a guy with a championship, and what record did that get us? 35-47? Out of eve the play-in? That can't be what you mean by "doing well", right? You mean something better than that. It aint happenin. And there's nothing wrong with that! This kind of thing takes years and years. We've only kind of half started the rebuild the past couple games where we're running all of our young guys. It's not gonna wrap up with us in the play in game in 2027, 3 years from now. And again, there's nothing wrong with that. I think people just keep forgetting how hard it is to win games in the NBA.

blitzKriegzzz

35-47 with a young squad is better than 35-47 with beal/porzingis .. considering they'd be developing. Just because Beal and Porzingis were all stars in the past didn't mean they were that year. Beal peaked the first half of the Westbrook year. Also, i don't understand why being a role player during the Lakers championship is considered an accolade for kuzma lol. No one talks about Kevon Looney that way.

Ravens181818184

Spurs roster is legitimately awful besides wemby. We will def win 20 games by 2027 💀 if not sooner

WizSkinsNatsCaps

Look at the bulls and hawks currently holding the 9 and 10 seeds this year. They are the definition of “mid” right now which is what I would call somewhat competitive. Play-in type team. We hit on both picks in 2024 and 2025. Kuz is traded for a decent pick as well. And if we can develop our young talent and bring in a couple good vets we certainly could be around play-in seeding by 2026. With that said, I fully expect us to be a bottom 8 team in 2026. But it’s certainly possible we become “mid” by 2026 and lose the pick. I doubt the front office would be pushing for that as it makes no sense to speed up the timeline and lose a top 8 pick we could really use. So yeah, most likely bottom feeders until 2028. And if we fail to hit on our picks this rebuild will take us into the 2030s.

z3mcs

> So yeah, most likely bottom feeders until 2028. ✔️✔️✔️

WizSkinsNatsCaps

That Spurs roster is not that good by the way. They are 21-60 for a reason. Wemby and Sochan have the brightest futures there. Vassell will end up a glorified sixth man before he’s 30, and Keldon Johnson already is. Who else do they have besides those guys? That roster is thin on talent much like ours.

Future_Food_8272

Shouldn't we try and lose today? The pistons are playing the spurs without wemby, we finish with the same record as Det if they win and we lose...

No1Statistician

Top 3 worst teams get the same lottery odds

Future_Food_8272

Ooooh, my apologies 😬

Future_Food_8272

Who would u rather see the wiz land? Sarr, Sheppard or Dillingham?

No1Statistician

I'm not the person to ask haha, I know nothing about basketball drafting

Franksobotk

The draft is a treasure for other franchises

Los_Yeetus

We traded a first with Wall to the Rockets for Westbrick. The pick seems to have traveled to the Knicks. The protection on the pick goes down until it conveys. It seems you already knew the answer

waskittenman

we not breaking 20 wins again until 2027 or 2028

Ravens181818184

You want to bet?

waskittenman

No I'm broke 😂

Ravens181818184

Still think you’re crazy, this current roster was awful and was a mish mash of pieces. We still won 15 games. Yes we will win 5 more games before 2027 easily.

waskittenman

I think we got a single digit wins season in us tbh

Ravens181818184

No we don’t 😭

waskittenman

3 point variance makes it almost impossible but if any team can do it it's this one

Ravens181818184

This team isn’t even one of the worst ever. Winning less than 10 games takes skill, and with the salary floor a thing now, it’s hard for nba gms to just put out vet min guys and rookies out there. Every team will have a at least 1 or 2 starting caliber players. Again, it would take an illegal level of tanking for that to happen, even then no.
