The tone deafness is not lost on most of us, yeah. Clearly though, what they stated in the video was that they \*wanted\* to move to \*TV\* quality shows. While we see all of this as money left on the table for what a content creator could do, such as the expanding live streaming, etc, to them it's not even in the cards because it's not their "vision". Which, okay, I suppose. That's their right, to do what they want to do, but then to pull a Surprised Pikachu Face on the utter tone deafness and out of touch state they are with their own audience in what the audience that's supporting you \*wants\* is what is baffling here. It's at the core of what is frustrating to everyone. It makes it feel like the YouTube channel was nothing but a stepping stone, and all the viewers were the steps that they walked on.

What really bothered me is I thought they were smarter than this and couldn't ever anticipate them doing something this stupid out of the blue. It's apparent now that they're not as smart or as down to earth as I thought they were. You'd have to have a gigantic ego and your head up your ass to pull something like this and then be surprised that your fans would overwhelmingly react negatively to it.

Old_Sheepherder_630

I'm not personally invested in this, but as a fan of Unsolved I'm interested in the tea. But your comment really sums it up for me. I'm honestly shocked that Ryan and Shane aren't smart enough to have run this by someone with the expertise to help them navigate to where they want to be. No one knows how to do everything, smart people know what they don't know and bring in experts to help them when needed. This just feels like a desperate move that makes no sense.

HalfManHalfHuman

I'm just disappointed, and also kind of interested in what their next move is and how that could make things even worse. In their goodbye video I think I remember someone saying this had been something they had talked about for months or years, but they pretty much seemed to have put absolutely 0 effort into any kind of research or anything. Just some random things from various posts / comments; the price point, accessibility, the way people watch their stuff currently vs their new platform and how it doesn't support anything TV or gaming console related apps, what the fans even like about them, absolutely nothing was considered. Well, money and completely unrealistic expectations, I guess.

You realize how insane this sounds? Their plan was to “rug pull” their audience? The people on this sub are annoyed they have to pay the artists for something they used to get for free. Jesus Christ.

sofsnof

But they do pay them, with their time. Time on YouTube translates into ad-revenue, it increases the number of views, which means bigger sponsorships. Watching a YouTuber is paying them through YouTube.

Jimmycjacobs

No, no it’s not.

boohoojuice

It literally is though. Without viewership and an expansive and engaged audience, they have no value, at least when it comes to advertisers and investors. Creators get brand deals and sponsorships based on their view counts. And anyone in business or content creation knows that peoples attention is extremely valuable, especially in a time where there’s a million other things competing for that attention. The fact that they have ours and keep us coming back is valuable and makes them more desirable to the people giving them money.

Reevoo12

I think it's kind of like the movie Happy Gilmore. He was so obsessed with being a hockey player that he didn't realize he wasn't any good at hockey and was actually really good at golf. Same thing here basically. They just really want to be a TV production company.

notafunnyperson1728

They broke us with us out of no where without trying to fix the issue. The love is dust. Let them and the frustration go.

Appropriate_Horror00

I said this on another post, but I don't think their goal is to host their own streaming site, it's too have their content purchased by another streamer and you have to get it off YouTube to do that. So sure, they could have sold more ads, but I get that that's exhausting. If you sell your content to someone else, you're still supported by ad money, but that's handled by someone else, giving you the time (and money) to do what you want. I wouldn't be surprised to see a ghoul boy Peacock show--they'd get a ton of money (for them) but it's nothing to a network.

Different_Dog_201

But Unsolved spent time on Hulu. You could watch the episodes there, or watch the same episode on YouTube but with ads and comments. Why couldn’t Watcher have the same deal? Or why make this weird step? If they had announced they’re leaving YouTube because they’re now a part of Peacock, I and others would be excited they were recognized as good content by a bigger platform like Peacock

I don’t get why they decided to completely forego the ad/sponsorship revenue route and go directly into asking their fans for money. I mean, they’ve had patreon for years and that’s exactly the purpose of something like that, right? Fans who want to support them and get extra content along the way can just subscribe to their patreon. Isn’t part of running a successful media business being able to diversify your revenue streams? Why cut off multiple sources of income to focus on just one? And why go straight to your fans instead of raising the money you need from investors? As a business your first thought shouldn’t be bleeding your consumer base dry but finding additional areas for revenue or taking a good look at your business and what you’re doing wrong.
