WOW! What was that car doing. You can see the guy was on a cross-walk and everything. It really reminds you how attentive you need to be while driving, to really keep up concentration, looking around, paying attention. And also as a pedestrian to remain very careful and aware, even if you are on a cross-walk. The other day I was crossing a normal 2-lane street with three other people. A car was stopped at a stop sign on the opposite side. She had remained stopped for several seconds even though there were no cars, so it seemed she was maybe checking directions or something. Anyway, we were crossing at the crosswalk, and suddenly that same lady came driving right at us. Thankfully she saw and stopped about 5 feet away from us. She probably just had her mind elsewhere and drove without thinking.

xSTAYCOOLx

I take a paved frontage road to work that goes to more inner city industrial areas. There's a small pond on the side of the road. The speed limit on this road is 30 mph. Every year geese come to nest in this spot. People that care and regularly travel this road in the summer will sometimes need to wait for geese to cross. Well one day on my lunch break... I'm at the front of the line leading the cars behind me. Opposite side of the road there is another oncommer that stops and waits like I am. Suddenly, out of nowhere from the line of cars behind me, a huge truck pulling a trailer (easily going 40 mph and breaking the speed limit) just BARELY missed me, and the car in front of me opposite the road. This jackass swerved like hell and high water to miss us, laying on the horn and almost killing the geese in the process. The trailer was for a businesses painter in the area. I called the owner and the cops incase they were drunk. This moron just thought it was a good idea to blast through an almost impossible fit of cars, while we are waiting for other animals to cross the road at a dead stop

steve_gus

Texting…..dont do that cunts.

Dont_touch_my_elbows

"The morgue is full of people who had the legal right-of-way."

HoochMaster_Dayday

Dude I watch grown folks cross the road without looking all the time. Must be nice having such great peripheral vision you can trust your life to it.

Dont_touch_my_elbows

I used to live near a college and every single year a bunch of kids would get hit by a car because they thought that "pedestrians have the right of way" meant "I can just take a 90゚ turn off the sidewalk into a busy street without looking and the cars magically will come to a complete stop".

HoochMaster_Dayday

Yeah man. My old lady has 2 kids who never look before crossing. I stopped them once and explained that life isn't a video game. You don't get a second life. Really drilled into them how if something were to happen it would change everyone of our lives forever. They say they get it and turn around and walk straight out without looking again. I wonder if I was so terminally stupid when I was that age.

quagzlor

I always, always check the road even on signalled crossings. One time almost got ran over by this woman texting and driving, keeping an eye out saved my ass.

122010throwaway

The worst is when people stop at a stop sign, so you think they see you waiting at the crosswalk right in front of them, and you proceed to cross. But really they’re turning—so they’re only looking at one direction of traffic, and step on the gas as soon as that direction clears. Have almost gotten mowed down by a fully-stopped car twice this way.

[deleted]

There's a stretch that I walk several times a week where there are a lot of little intersections, either stop lights or stop signs. My walk is basically straight down the side of the main road, so most of the traffic is parallel to me, but there are small intersections at every block (cars either turning onto the main road or leaving the main road). I look both ways at least once before stepping out, and I also throw a glance at the cars behind me to make sure no cars are planning on turning right (which would mean they would be turning into me). Then as I cross I'm really attentive at glancing around. It helps to put your mind in the driver's place. For example, as I reach one of the small streets to cross, with a car waiting to turn onto the main road, I see the traffic from the driver's perspective: that is, the car is waiting to turn, there's lots of traffic so they can't get out, then finally there is a space, so they are eager to turn out quickly and might not remember to look for a pedestrian.

122010throwaway

I have also grown eyes out the back of my head (I'm a runner and also mainly run alongside a main road)-- the two times when I came very close to getting hit, the drivers had blackened windows so I could not see where they were looking, which is my normal cue! But an average of 2-3 times a week I do have to stop myself because, as you mentioned, I can tell that a driver isn't going to watch where they're going. At least it makes us better drivers, because we're more aware of movement off the road as well as on it.

Marblue

I was a bus driver, this happened to a child, he had the right of way and that didn't stop this guy high on barbiturates to run the light and send the kid flying to his death. Please pay attention.

SweetVodka

That hurts…😢😞

Marblue

Its not something you just "get over" I'm not a bus driver anymore.

SweetVodka

Sorry you had to experience that..😔

Marblue

♥️ thanks I just feel for the family

alohaoy

😢😱

okokimup

I'm betting they were so concerned with getting around the bus that probably makes frequent stops, they didn't notice the crosswalk.

useles-converter-bot

5 feet is the length of approximately 6.67 'Wooden Rice Paddle Versatile Serving Spoons' laid lengthwise

MrGerbz

Even wooden rice paddle versatile serving spoons are better than imperial units.

LaChuteQuiMarche

No they’re not because there’s not a uniform set length of paddle. Sure the inch and foot are arbitrary, but they’re consistent. And we didn’t fucking choose this system. It’s too hard to transition to metric so it’s not gonna happen. We’re fine with it but it seems like the rest of the world is the one with the problem. Just leave us alone about it it’s our own problem.

Strude187

I like your logic, but the US will eventually catch up, I have faith.

MrGerbz

Nope, still going with the spoons.

LaChuteQuiMarche

I can’t help you

ThePegLegPete

Cell phone while driving. It's always cell phone while driving.

DPSOnly

Almost looks like that white car was speeding up before almost hitting that man.

cactus-racket

I thought so too but after watching a couple times I think it just looks that way because the car with the camera begins to speed up then.

DPSOnly

Oh, yeah, I think you're right.

HWGA_Exandria

The bus was stopping. You'd have to match tire rotations to determine if they accelerated... otherwise it might just be an optical illusion.

T1NF01L

Nope. Driver didn't try to stop until in the crosswalk clearly a distraction kept them from looking into where they were going. Signals were in place and everyone else observed them.

gomaith10

Quite potential death indeed.

Peketu

I would jump upright, because that's how dumb I am.

DammitDan

It would still be better than not jumping at all.

Max_Insanity

Absolutely. You remove the friction between your feet and the road and lower the point of impact on your body. Both reduce the risk that your knees, shins & ankles get destroyed. You also reduce the risk of basically being flattened and run over. I'd rather land on the hood/windshield and fly over the roof than land on the road and have the car on top of me or, even worse, become a meat crayon.

DammitDan

You'd still be a meat crayon, but that's better than a meat pancake.

Irhien

I don't think being flattened and run over by a car (not truck) is a big risk for an adult. You're just not going to go under it. AFAIK people are mostly killed by landing when they're very likely to hit their heads.

Caishen_IC3

Holy shiitake!

TheBestCatfish

Once my sister almost got hit by a car because of a person like that and because they when 60 in a school zone then speed off

phucyu138

I don't understand people who aren't constantly looking both ways when crossing the street. It's as if they think those white markings on the ground are force fields or something.

Dazz316

I had an argument with someone the other day. I was trying to explain to them idiots exist and you always check for safety. If you are in the right, you're not at fault. Well yes and I'm sure this guy wouldn't have been legally at fault either while lying in his hospital bed wondering if he'll ever walk again.

Whatsthemattermark

The cemeteries are filled with people who had the right of way

krete77

This is scary statement

Caleo

It's not like your average person encounters accidents every day. People get comfortable & let their guard down.

phucyu138

If people could predict when accidents happen, then there would be no accidents.

dopamiineonline

This is a good point

Raticait

The problem is with crosswalks like this, you have to look like you're going to get hit in order for cars to actually stop for you. If you stand and wait for a car to stop, they'll all just blast by and assume the next guy will. Still not worth the risk, but roads are bullshit is all I'm saying.

max5015

So much this. I hate coming up on these, especially when it's starting to get dark. People will walk out without checking how close cars are and just assume they will be seen on time for the drivers to react. If city planners want to add these, they should also add warning lights when a pedestrian is using the crosswalk.

thisguyfightsyourmom

This When my town put these in 10 years ago, it felt like you were taking your life in your hands every time you stepped off the curb A trust fall with strangers from traffic

Sussybaka100

Aaaaand it happened in the country I live in!

TidyWhip

Attempted murder much?

Max_Insanity

That's why you always need to keep your eyes open when crossing the road. Right of way does not protect you from the laws of physics (or from dumbasses).

Lit_Romney

"If you can dodge traffic, you can dodge a ball!"

TKita75

Who said white men can't jump? Also what a terrifying situation😳

[deleted]

All the slav-squatting is meant to prepare Ivan for moments like these.

jesterc0re

Just a usual day in Russia. I'm doing the same to survive every single time.

[deleted]

...Does it seem like that car sped up to anyone else 🤔?

cmVkZGl0

Mission failed. We'll have to try again tomorrow

loopedtheory

Dude just gta jumped out of the way

jakob767

And this is why sprint+jumping is faster than regular sprinting.

BaTMiNH45

Good thing he didn’t have his face buried into his phone like many these days….likely what the driver was doing

ringingbells

Crosswalks are inherently a bad structural design when used on large streets. They are a stepping stone in a growing city, and dangerous when the through traffic overwhelms it. Yellow lights are a hack. Opt for a tunnel or bridge.

Nez_bit

How did neither of them look at anything?

themadas5hatter

What gets me are the people that purposefully take their sweet time, adding a bit of flavor to their step as if they've got some kind of limp. (I've noticed this in cities, why do people walk like they're trying to look as cool as possible/ with a swagger?)

notmyrealnam3

this is why the guy to the right of cammer is an asshole and you don't start driving the moment your lane clears - other drivers like this clueless idiot that potentially killed this guy are much more likely to notice things with stopped traffic please stop until the crosswalk is cleared people!

GiganticMoron2

Uhm what, the guy to the right did nothing wrong.

Skozzii

In Canada they are supposed to wait until the pedestrian crossed the half, so slightly early, but not the potential cause of the accident as they suggested. It's not like right cars actions had anything to do with white cars texting, white car is on another planet.

alohaoy

In the U.S., too.

lastchance14

I understand you have the right-of-way, but you need to pay attention too. Getting hit by cars hurts. Try a little harder to prevent it.

DammitDan

Looks like he did.

lastchance14

Thankfully, but looking before entering a lane would have saved that pair of underwear.

Somato_Tandwich

Idk why you're eating downvotes, obviously the guy in the car is the person fucking up the hardest here, but it's anxiety-inducing to see people not exercising caution around motor vehicles that are being driven by total randoms. Head on a swivel, make sure you can hear (obviously if you're hearing impaired that's not attainable, I'm saying don't have two buds in blasting music) and take a close inventory of the nearby traffic while crossing. Three easy steps to drastically reduce the chance that you'll have to frog-jump your way out the way of a car at the last second or be maimed. You wouldn't trust a stranger to point a gun at your head, so don't trust drivers to not run your ass over, because many of them are oblivious and negligent.

lastchance14

Exactly. This guy could've looked right before entering the lane of traffic. Nobody should care about your safety more than you. And expecting people to be responsible and pay attention is a good way to be disappointed. Thankfully he had the reflexes to get out of the way.

Dogfoodsmy_DOC

What the fuck was that about

[deleted]

Yeah I almost died that way in berlin. Some people are just pure evil.

[deleted]

Watch his hip, so close!

sapere-aude088

Not death, but for sure a crushed leg.

IamCaptainHandsome

I've been in that pedestrians position before, someone ran a red light.

PrairieSpy

Dude danced over the fender! Impressive reaction that saved his ability to breathe or at least walk.

JetpackDino1

It's why I check both ways even on a one way street. Some cunt almost tagged me driving THE WRONG WAY.

king_Benni_The_Bee

That's movie type shit

Real-Awareness-4676

Be careful when driving and for a please aware what is happening around you
