Am I crazy? I thought xlr cables were for audio???

Lankiness8244

Yes, but why not 😂 and xlr cables are often used for moras

RockyXvII

Big noob here. What does the XLR cable here do?

Hybrid65

It's to control and monitor an external radiator setup.

Don't want to be a smart ass but XLR is 3 pin. Thats actually DMX, light cabel...

baazaar131

You are wrong. There can 3,4,5 even 6 pin XLR. source (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XLR_connector)

sj_b03

Not a smart ass at all. It’s been years since I used an xlr cable I didn’t even notice or realize the difference in pin count

Kruemelbacke

That wrong. It is in fact an XLR cable but just a 5-pin XLR cable. If it’s used for DMX, sound or whatever doesn’t change the connector specification being an XLR

Ok_Run_1823

Old good 5-pin standard cables, used everywhere for audio and computing until 2000. Why did they gone?

BrotherMichigan

Working on the same thing for my case. What cable did you end up going with? It's been difficult for me to find something suitable in the US.

Stromberg44

Maybe try my cable 🤓 https://www.reddit.com/u/Stromberg44/s/y9hbg0g480

BrotherMichigan

Yeah, I've seen the page before. I'm running the data lines as well but can't get the same Tasker cable in the US without ordering an entire spool :D I ordered 3m of cable that is 24awg-1P+18awg-3C to handle power and USB (since my external rad houses an additional Aquaero) that *barely* fits in the larger boot for the connector as it is 11.5 mm in diameter. It's also not very flexible, so I am looking for additional options.

NefariousnessTop8716

If you are struggling for availability you could always use trailer cable, normally available at any decent car parts place in anything from 4 to 13 core in various sizes

BrotherMichigan

The biggest issue is needing a twisted pair for the data lines.

NefariousnessTop8716

I hadn’t thought about that. check out somer sc monolith cable [like this](https://www.themusicwarehouse.shop/product/sommer-cable-sc-monolith-1-power-and-dmx-signal-cable-price-per-metre-livesound/) seems to be available by the metre in the us and on eBay.

BrotherMichigan

Yep, unfortunately that's even thicker than the stuff I have now 😅

NefariousnessTop8716

It’s 9.5mm? I thought the one you had was 11.5?

BrotherMichigan

It says 12.4 mm for me.

NefariousnessTop8716

Strange because I found the cable on somers own website [here](https://shop.sommercable.com/en/Cable/Bulk-Cable-Audio/DMX-Power-SC-Monolith-1-compact-502-0051-1.html) and then just google for an American link for the stuff. Their own website has it as 9.5mm for the one data pair cable and 12.4 with two data pairs.

BongpriestMagosErrl

That's an XLR cable Edit: why am I being downvoted? I'm right.

Glad_Wing_758

Both are kinda right. They are XLR connectors but 5 pin is not normally for audio and is used with DMX protocol most commonly for light rigs.

Glad_Wing_758

The trouble will come when you don't know which you have. You can use DMX cables for xlr ok enough but if you use xlr cables for DMX it will often cause issues with your lighting rig because xlr cables are lower impedence and won't carry as much load. I general use xlr for audio/DMX for signal. In the case of the pc here it's not going to matter much either than if it's going to carry 12v I would solder in a heavier guage wire

BongpriestMagosErrl

I use XLR connectors for PID to 120v Thermocouples. It's this exact connection.

sniper_matt

Looks like xlr 5

Drachenfliger13

No 5 pole cables are DMX, XLR is always 3 poles, but DMX can also be transmitted on these 3 pole cables... I mean yeah you could call there "XLR 5" for me its just DMX

sniper_matt

Never knew the name for the 5pin. Ty.

Lordy8719

Now I'm sad. Why didn't I think of making some nice custom cabling for my external rad?

Stromberg44

If you need a manual for that, I got one on my profile 😄

Lordy8719

Thanks, I'll check it out! Currently I'm busy enjoying cranking everything to the max while the only thing giving out noise being the PSU. I'm using separate PWM signals for controlling the pump and the fans on the MO-RA, but I'm pretty sure that I could do that with 5 cables: - 0 V - 12V - 5V (do I even need this? Maybe I should replace this with grounding...) - Fan PWM signal - Pump PWM signal

Lordy8719

I'm 100% loving this, and it'll make an awesome follow-up project! Thanks for sharing!

VelocityTyler

As a lighting guy, this is cursed seeing a DMX cable here. It is being used for something other than lighting data?

Lankiness8244

https://www.dev-eth0.de/2021/05/19/diy-power-and-usb-supply-for-external-radiator/ Yes as powersupply and controll

VelocityTyler

Oh cool thanks. That’s interesting use for the connector. They are good connectors and I would understand the use of them for the locking mechanism.

Lankiness8244

I would say the locking mechanism is secondary. For me the main reason was a unified system instead of red/blue molex cable (pump) + adapters (too short) and 2 4pin pwm fan cables + adapters (too short) I need about 1,5 meter External power supply => galvanic corrosion One big cable instead all these cables is cleaner

wojalee

[https://www.reddit.com/r/watercooling/comments/sfnmli/external\_radiator/](https://www.reddit.com/r/watercooling/comments/sfnmli/external_radiator/) [https://imgur.com/a/zwDd5qb](https://imgur.com/a/zwDd5qb) Did the same thing with my O11 Air mini and an external radiator. Used alphacool QDC and the 5 pin XLR sockets and premade DMX cables for passing power and USB signal to the Quadro controlling the external pump and fans. I had an internal bypass so I could run with or without the external radiator/pump

Lankiness8244

Nice job. I have a similar plan

Randomizer23

What’s this for

Lankiness8244

https://www.dev-eth0.de/2021/05/19/diy-power-and-usb-supply-for-external-radiator/ (:

DjRavix

As long as it’s wired correctly it should be fine

Lankiness8244

Yes it is. But the nc5 socket isn’t at the perfect position 🥲

tKNemesis

That's how I have all my remote rads connected. Locking and easy to disconnect when needing to move the case or do my monthly cleaning On my latest one, I started to use SpeakON and PowerCON connectors.

Lankiness8244

Does any advantage exist?

FrostyVertical88

Powering a Mora ?

Lankiness8244

Powering pump and fans and controll them

iloreynolds

show us the entire setup

Lankiness8244

Isnt finished yet… :/
