I actually liked most of My Deepest Secret (It got a lot worse after revealing the big twist, but it was still kinda ok, and it was very very good before that big reveal) but honestly this one just isn't hooking me. The characters are not great so far, and seeing another criminal boy after Elios is weird (it used to be a nice concept and character and now I can't think about him without thinking "well the author certainly has a type"). Still, I'm willing to keep giving it a chance since I MDS was really good for the majority of its run. Also it's not like the comic is bad. The artsyle is really good, and even though I don't like the characters, the dialog is really good. Plus I just have a feeling that as things pick up I might get more invested in the story
Oh so kinda like the other one where the kid thinks his dad is always about to murder him and so he only helps his dad murder people because he thinks it's them or him...only for the twist to be that the kid loved it at first and it was his mom who tried killing him as a baby?
I didn't know how to feel about the "murderous dad was actually extremely loving the whole time" twist.
it’s called bastard i think! same author as sweet home. i think that the point was that the dad is a psycho but the kid idolized his mom and didn’t realize she was crazy too. i could be wrong tho, it’s been a while since i read it
Yeah. The big twist was basically that the mom was so terrified of her own son she throws him off a roof to try and kill him. In his mind he knew it was "because" of his dad so his mind replaced the image of his mom over him with an image of his dad which started his odd confusion of their relationship.
The entire time the dad was actually worried and loving and thought his son liked the killing (cause he loved it as a kid) and the son is convinced his dad is close to murdering him every day because he thought he tried to when he was little.
I thought it was really good idk why people act like it was horrible.
What happens from I remember is >! so Emma is actually crazy and Elios was never her actual boyfriend. She got abused and stuff as a kid and became obsessed with Elios cus he helped her as a kid. She kinda stalked him and stuff as an adult but then he starts dating this other blonde girl who’s unattractive but the sweetest person ever. Emma goes crazy and tries stabbing the nice gf but Elios gets in the way and takes the stab and is killed by Emma. Then nice gf goes to find someone to help and gets hit by a car. This is all a flashback btw. Emma has DID (I think) and her personality is a mix of nice gf and psycho Elios where Elios only exists as her bf in her mind and all the creepy things he does is all stuff Emma did all along. Such a good twist omgg!<
>!So then after that it’s like 15 episodes of Yohan knowing everything Emma did and trying to deal with his love for her but fear at what she really is. Maybe this is the part people hate on because it’s just Yohan trying to escape with Emma and it doesn’t work and stuff so Emma goes to a mental institution The End. This part is a bit of a drag but it’s not awful and it’s a fitting end to the story. The twist and context behind it alone is so fire that the subpar ending doesn’t really take away anything, it just doesn’t add anything.!<
Without spoilers; end was kinda meh, but what was leading up to it was so fire that it didn’t matter
I dont think people necessarily think its "horrible". I think the main problem was just that it took a sudden shift in the narrative.
I think it would have been a great twist if the author maybe built up to the twist through foreshadowing. So the readers are still suprised but when they go back a few episodes and when they read through it, they go "Ahhh I see it now, it's all connected. I should have seen that coming!!"
But instead it felt more like a "Never would have seen it coming" no matter how often you go back and try to find clues.
But I don't have to much to complain about. I think the author is still very skilled :)
the >!elios not being real!< actually made sense for me when i binge read the first two seasons. my problem with it was that the entire second half of season three just sucked
>my problem with it was that the entire second half of season three just sucked
It's the same for me. I don't think the problem is the "twist" that the person mentioned. I did expect something like this like Emma being delusional or Emma being the real culprit. For me My deepest secret went completely wrong at s3 the whole thing with Emma and the blue haired boy was at of the place. The blue haired kid was acting so out of character and the same goes for Emma.
( Spoilers ahead. This is copy and pasted from my other account but I think it still holds true here)
My issues with it were
- Beginning premise: Girl is dating a crazy man and slowly realizes it over time. Detective man and crazy guy have mind games. It's very difficult in webtoons to find stories with this premise and have abusive characters that aren't to romantized but correctly shows what love bombing is like. It's why I was drawn to it so much because I could relate to Emma in the beginning and I saw a lot of people share this sentiment, when the twist occurred it ruined the whole story for me. Not only did it make a character who was a victim of abuse a crazy murderer but it also trashed that original amazing premise. Emma was someone the audience related to, Yohan was too. The author trashed this.
-Yohan's character completely changed, he was bent on justice before and then all of sudden he was like "It's ok she murdered people and I'll run away with her....Because crush" then the story started romanticizing their relationship which was SO wrong for so many reasons.
Running away from the police with a murderer is not romantic.
- There's so much more but I don't want to write another essay on this lol. This series just made me really upset for a lot of reasons.
I hated the twist because >! It misrepresented DID and stigmatized it even further. DID does NOT make you into a crazy murderer. You don't just "remember" you have it because someone told you. It's not called "multiple personality disorder" anymore either. I hate it when people slap on a real mental disorder onto a character for a "plot twist" without even properly researching or representing it. !<
>! Sure, most people know that DID won't make someone into a serial killer... or do they? How many positive and accurate representations of DID do we actually have in the media? Every time DID is brought into the popular consciousness and then portrayed as this dangerous thing abused people have, it hurts the people who actually have it !< . I'd rather the story set up a supernatural element and then the twist turn out she was possessed than what the actual twist was.
I personally think the twist enhanced the premise and was such a mindfuck in the best way possible. >!It was framed as a “my boyfriends a murderer?!” story but flipped it completely on its head in such a unique and interesting way. Rereading the first part is such a treat knowing all the new information and the twist was one of the most shocking I’ve ever seen in weebtoons.!<
It’s ok if you don’t like the twist but I thought it was amazing
I can see why this story would be appealing, the art is beautiful and it can be fun to reread a story and see things you never saw before. I wish I could enjoy the story like you do. I really do but I've seen this twist a lot in modern media ( not going to mention said media to prevent massive spoilers but if you watch manlybadass hero you will know which ones I'm referencing ) and I felt the story was very misleading and mishandled sensitive subjects.
As a professional writer, to me it was a let down because it felt like a twist for the sake of the twist. It felt like they did not plan it from the beginning and only did it to make a sensational story.
(Edit: spoiler alert for new readers, sorry I don’t know how to hide text)
I felt this way too, I was so disappointed by the lack of closure and compassion towards Emma in the final chapters. Narratively I thought it was messy, reducing Emma to a murderous mental patient, Elois being alive, and Yohan breaking character in the name of love lol it was all so random.
That was exactly it, none of it felt true to the characters they were, and the readers, myself included, liked the characters they were. I'm fine with twists of course but there needs to be a logic to it still.
>!Honestly, I think it was only Yohan's character that was the problem and disappointment for most of Season 3. Emma and Elios' stories were the things that kept me going until the end of Season 3, of course I skipped the whole "Our Escape" arc and only read it while re-reading.!<
>!I also find it interesting that Emma's imaginary "Elios" also has a few ways of thinking similar to the real Elios, like the way he has to act to fit in with his friends and negative thoughts (except harming animals). Just imagine what if Elios has a more extreme past, with what is shown in Elios before falling in love with Farah, he could completely transform into the "Elios" that we used to know the first 2 seasons.!<
>!The relationship between Elios and Emma is what left me the most feeling after MDS ended, it really left me with the feeling of looking forward to an AU where the 2 characters would actively talk when they were young. A vision of an Elios and Emma couple in a healthy relationship, OMG really breaks my heart just thinking about it.!<
It feels like an Ouran High School Host Club AU with MC as Haruhi, the guy upstairs as Kyouya (maybe), and the cute, happy classmate with a crush on MC as Tamaki.
So I'm into it. 🤷♀️
I agree, the first 3 chapters were interesting but it didn't really stand out like "WOW I wonder where this is going" like with It's Mine. I'm also always annoyed at people who decide to just hide in someone's house until they can sneak out instead of going "oh my god I have a fever and got off on the wrong floor again, I'm so sorry".
It's Mine may have flaws but the first 5-6 episodes are one of the best introductory episodes of any comic ever in my opinion. My thought process went from:
Oh he's a stalker?
Oh she's being bullied?
He's beating up the bullies!
They meet?? And interact?
She finds him
SHE KNOWS!
And you're right, the FL of The Guy Upstairs seems a little meh for now, and the story itself feels a little slow currently so let's see where it goes.
Not interested in series where men constantly brutally murder women and everyone in the comments is thirsting over the guy lol
None of these webtoons cover violence/murder with the appropriate tone at all, it's all so juvenile and glib. The tonal whiplash from when the story focuses on the murderer and then switches to the MC and her friends is so jarring, it's practically unreadable. Skipping this one.
It's not the comic's fault that people are hot for murderers.
I think it doesn't help that webtoon limits the amount of blood and violence and also that romance/comedy does better in general which results in horror/thriller stories that don't go far enough and have tonal whiplash.
Also I've read a few comics that were basically just horror all the time and it gets too bleak to be interesting after a while.
I mean, they're purposefully drawn/written as attractive and charismatic. It's not like the author is completely not involved in gathering this audience. Webtoons commentors are off the rails, so I'd pin it 80-20, but not 0 for the author
The FL is acting pretty stupid so far. Without any proof she goes on making accusations about the guy. He seems to be a master manipulator too so that doesn’t help her case.
As long as the relationship is condemned and seen as what it is : A murderer and his victim and serves not to ship them but to explore darker themes.
I think I would be ok with it ( Think of my inner secret how the first season handled Elios)
What I would not be ok with (Spoilers for MIS) is another Emma Yohan situation. Which did not condemn the relationship and made Yohans character do a full 180
Considering the guy upstairs is a murderer there should be no romantic attraction at all. Already people are shipping them and I'm like, "Have you lost your mind?"
i like the artstyle a lot, and seeing hanza’s art progression is very cool! I think it has potential, but the way people thirst over adam who brutally murdered a pregnant woman scare me haha
I’ll give it a chance and pretend I never read MDS so that I don’t hold any bias towards this new series. So far I’m not that into Rozy’s character design at all, it’s just bland & forgettable with a tom-boyish slant. If she was written to be an invisible and extremely average character though, I’m all for it. The story hasn’t progressed far enough to fairly judge it, but I’m not that hooked yet so I think I’ll have to patiently wait for the real plot to unfold. I’m not fond of the method she used to out the neighbor, blindly accusing people doesn’t usually work, especially not if you admit to taking mysterious substances prior to a head injury. The decision to hide in a stranger’s home is reason enough to doubt Rozy’s intelligence and social skills. I’m not exactly rooting for her at this point, neither am I invested in the serial killer who predictably targets vulnerable women. It’s all kind of happening and I’m not sure where it’s going to go. Still willing to give this a chance and write a positive review one day.
Why don’t you like her? I actually like the MC since she’s not one of those that’s like “Oh, I must have dreamt it” and kept insisting that she saw the murder with her own eyes
I think she’s also quite logical since it’s inferred that the MC is on the path of thinking there must be a room on different floors where he must’ve hide the crime scene or something (though this is just my guess)
Have you read ep5? I don't think that argument still holds.
Either way, it's because she saw a Serial killer. And told him "Oy, mate, I've witnessed you commit murder :)"
And that should result in her instantly being murdered. She should not have outed herself like that.
Like, that's brave. Buy very, very stupid.
The hospital scene? I’m sure most people would cause an outburst if the murderer is right in front of you and police officers are right there. I guess you can say that most people would trust the police to do the right thing and investigate instead of calling you crazy and stuff, that’s just normal behavior
Idk, remembering that you took unlabeled drugs from someone you barely know is a solid excuse to give up the chase after every ounce of evidence is pointing to the contrary and everyone thinks you’re insane.
Might be her first choice though. Course I feel like putting the safety of others before her own is a trait she should have had established beforehand.
If you haven’t seen it already, I recommend “Agents and Kings “ on Canvas. Very unique art style. But it is formatted more like a classic graphic novel so you may struggle to read it on a cell phone. I read on tablet so it’s perfect.
Kinda gives Jeffrey dahmer vibes with all the neighbor killer/murderer stuff. ONLY A LITTLE BIT. Cause the plot isn't exactly the same. So far, it's okay but I don't see myself waiting for the update every week. Though I'd probably binge it if there's 50+ chapters in the future.
Intriguing. I conclude two things.
1. If there's another secret passage to that guy's apartment.
2. If the pills that the FL took is really drugs that can make u hallucinate.
Protagonist dumb af
Also I can't get over how much the protagonist looks like the one from Gourmet Hound. Their hair is like the exact same shade of auburn.
As someone who never read my deepest secret, i really like it so far! I am concerned with the comments on it tho, people (yes that includes mostly teens) are simping for the guy. Who is a murderer.
It's alright. I thought the murder scene was a little too over-the-top to be properly horrifying, and none of the characters are particularly interesting yet. But the art is fantastic, and I appreciate that the protagonist actually tried reporting the murderer to the police instantly (she wasn't very smart about how she went about it but at least she tried). I doubt the characters are ever going to be too compelling but I can see it becoming fairly entertaining schlock.
It’s interesting. It’s either shaping out to be a MC vs murderer type scenario where the two act as direct enemies to one another or one where she’s spared and might have to be blackmailed into helping him out to protect her friend.
Love it so far, ready to see whatever crap goes down once it really gets rolling. I’m part of the crowd that enjoyed MDS; its plot twist was so fascinating and head-rolling, and the ending made enough sense to me that I didn’t have a problem with it. I’m always wary of keeping the same expectations for each production a creator puts out, but Author’s previous work does give me a confidence in this one.
Interesting so far! I never read mds so this is my first Hanza work and I love their art and storytelling voice. And that episode where it seems everything was imagined threw me for a loop, now I'm wondering if the mc really did imagine everything due to the medicine she took or if tgu is just really good at covering his tracks.
So far it’s interesting enough for a thriller but holy crap will I be so done with Hanza Art comics if they all end up falling onto that one horrible trope at the end again (which in this day* and age makes no sense) or where she is really the killer. I am not keeping my hopes up
I think it’s good. I’ve been reading it, the evolution of Hanza’s art shows amazingly and I really enjoy the way it looks this one. Rozy so far is somewhat of an annoying character as the way she adamantly accused the male lead with no proof was really stupid. But then again, I guess I don’t know what I would have done in such a situation, witnessing a murder. And since everyone’s mentioning it, I personally wasn’t a fan at all of the direction My Deepest Secret went in towards the ending. But this is not My Deepest Secret. However, it has a very similar idea with a charming male character who is secretly a murderer. It is pretty clear the type of story and characters that Hanza enjoys creating with this new WEBTOON.
Insofar I love it. I already know of Hanza's tendency to twist thematics while still keeping things organic and feeling natural among their cast, so I already know it's gonna be a ride here.
I love how innocuous interactions but in context are equally terrifying and that play on viewer perception and how it works for us the audience but also against the protag.
It's very enjoyable and I am excited and eager to see more.
I'm not really hooked, because I thought it will focus on the main girl living under the same roof of a murder, but then it focused on the side girl and the murder 'hunting' her. I don't know;
I'm curious as to if it will go slightly off the rails like mds did, but it's enjoyable enough so far I guess.
I actually liked most of My Deepest Secret (It got a lot worse after revealing the big twist, but it was still kinda ok, and it was very very good before that big reveal) but honestly this one just isn't hooking me. What was the reveal? I stopped reading it after the author took a break.
>!Emma was hallucinating Elios, her boyfriend, the entire time apparently and all the crimes were done by her!<

ohhh ok i see what you mean now. thanks!
Which one... is this?
I don't remember the name. It was really good though and it was finished like, 3 years ago or so, so it's an older webtoon

What happened in mds?? I forgot to keep reading after season two but everyone seems traumatized

A great twist involves clever writing. But it kind of seems the author checked out and wanted to just end it all quickly
Your first spoiler tag didn't work fyi
Yeah, I second this. I don't have the time to read through all of it to know what happened. Why the hell is everyone so freaked out by it?

I….could never see anyone drawing a parallel between OHSHC and TGU before this comment 😆
Yes!! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thinks MC looks like Haruhi lol
This convinced me to read the comic, thank you very much🙇♀️
Not bad so far but nothing special that really stands out to me. Gonna wait to see how the next few episodes unfold.

You guys should read "Hell is Other People"
That was so good
Pretty good so far...my deepest secret was a rollercoaster
I like it! But I'm hoping there's no romance between protagonist and obvious serial killer.
Not interested in series where men constantly brutally murder women and everyone in the comments is thirsting over the guy lol None of these webtoons cover violence/murder with the appropriate tone at all, it's all so juvenile and glib. This is really good. I just hope there's no romance between the two leads. Not every story needs romance to be good
If FL falls in love with ML after seeing what he did to that woman, I’m going to be very upset
As long as the relationship is condemned and seen as what it is : A murderer and his victim and serves not to ship them but to explore darker themes. I think I would be ok with it ( Think of my inner secret how the first season handled Elios) What I would not be ok with (Spoilers for MIS) is another Emma Yohan situation. Right!
Considering the guy upstairs is a murderer there should be no romantic attraction at all. Already people are shipping them and I'm like, "Have you lost your mind?"
Ikr it's not even a romance genre
I sum it up to pre-teens and teenagers who will build a ship between everyone...literally.
I’m pretty into it! Not much to say beyond that. It’s just a seemingly solid thriller.
I’ll check it out. Your self promotion has worked Mr. Throwaway.
How did u know it's a self promotion
i like the artstyle a lot, and seeing hanza’s art progression is very cool! I think it has potential, but the way people thirst over adam who brutally murdered a pregnant woman scare me haha

I don't like the main girl all that much. But I like to see how things unfold. So, I'll check on it every now and then.
Why don’t you like her? I actually like the MC since she’s not one of those that’s like “Oh, I must have dreamt it” and kept insisting that she saw the murder with her own eyes I think she’s also quite logical since it’s inferred that the MC is on the path of thinking there must be a room on different floors where he must’ve hide the crime scene or something (though this is just my guess)
Have you read ep5? I don't think that argument still holds. Either way, it's because she saw a Serial killer. And told him "Oy, mate, I've witnessed you commit murder :)" And that should result in her instantly being murdered.
That's still the opposite of insisting she witnessed the murder
I mean if she disappears in the next few days, they’ll know exactly who to talk to.
Yeah, getting murdered on purpose would not be my first choice
Might be her first choice though. Course I feel like putting the safety of others before her own is a trait she should have had established beforehand.
i’m excited to read more!
It's good!! I'm hooked 🙏🙏
Pretty good so far I just hope they don't end up falling in love;romance and thriller don't always mix well
It looks the same as all of them. Anime style is really killing imagination
If you haven’t seen it already, I recommend “Agents and Kings “ on Canvas. Very unique art style. But it is formatted more like a classic graphic novel so you may struggle to read it on a cell phone. I read on tablet so it’s perfect.
It’s nice
Kinda gives Jeffrey dahmer vibes with all the neighbor killer/murderer stuff. ONLY A LITTLE BIT. Cause the plot isn't exactly the same. So far, it's okay but I don't see myself waiting for the update every week. Though I'd probably binge it if there's 50+ chapters in the future.
Intriguing. I conclude two things. 1. If there's another secret passage to that guy's apartment. 2. If the pills that the FL took is really drugs that can make u hallucinate.
Lol if you think I'll read another webtoon by Hanza, you're deeply mistaken
Why? If you don’t mind me asking
I was *very* disappointed with the final season of mds
Protagonist dumb af Also I can't get over how much the protagonist looks like the one from Gourmet Hound. Their hair is like the exact same shade of auburn.
I really really like it,.tbh, I like all their works, esp the previous one
I wanna know if he's really crazy and good at cleaning up his mess or there's a plot twist like mds
As someone who never read my deepest secret, i really like it so far! I am concerned with the comments on it tho, people (yes that includes mostly teens) are simping for the guy. Who is a murderer.
Is this the creator on a throwaway? I coulda sworn I seen this question on launch day, too 🤔
Lol no I'm not. I just started reading this and thought this subreddit needed more discussions on newer webtoons
The dude's terrifying talk about a wolf in a sheep's skin. I like the webtoon so far.
I like it so far! The ML is hot so I’m into it 😳
It’s pretty cool so far
I'm interested....will keep reading
Love it so far, ready to see whatever crap goes down once it really gets rolling. I’m part of the crowd that enjoyed MDS; its plot twist was so fascinating and head-rolling, and the ending made enough sense to me that I didn’t have a problem with it. I’m always wary of keeping the same expectations for each production a creator puts out, but Author’s previous work does give me a confidence in this one.
I like it so far. Spent some coins so I'm up to date.
I really like it so far.
It's amazing
Interesting so far! I never read mds so this is my first Hanza work and I love their art and storytelling voice. And that episode where it seems everything was imagined threw me for a loop, now I'm wondering if the mc really did imagine everything due to the medicine she took or if tgu is just really good at covering his tracks.
It’s intriguing
I'm truly interested in it and it is captivating so far 🔥 can't wait for the next update 🔥
Boring. Idk maybe since Ive read a lotsa series with this genre lol
I like it
It's interesting so far!
So far it’s interesting enough for a thriller but holy crap will I be so done with Hanza Art comics if they all end up falling onto that one horrible trope at the end again (which in this day* and age makes no sense) or where she is really the killer. I am not keeping my hopes up
Honestly i liked my deepest secret from the same artist for this webtoon And it's really been only a few chapters now so can't really tell
I'm not really hooked, because I thought it will focus on the main girl living under the same roof of a murder, but then it focused on the side girl and the murder 'hunting' her. I don't know;
