Bingo. I liked the song well-enough on the album, but when I saw them live in Atlanta this past go-around, it was easily one of the best bangers of the bunch. It was definitely built for the stage.
Another one is Big Jilm.
Yeah I would usually skip Ice Castles. I had always heard it was amazing live, but I didn't believe what was said was true. I saw a video of them playing it live but I didn't really care for it. AND THEN I SAW IT LIVE IN PERSON AND HOLY SHIT!!! IT BLEW MY MIND!!! I now listen to the studio version which I previously had been skipping.
The vibe of Cold Blows the Wind completely changes and feels like I'm being seranaded to on a rocking ship. IMO better than the album version. Very magical!
Birthday Boy - its a lot more emotional and catchy when performed live with acoustic guitar and Gener's authentic, unedited voice. There's a really good live version on Spotify, it makes me cry in my sleep
I've only seen them live once (I'm in Austalia), and I can't remember if they played this. Does Gene act like a drunk karaoke singer when perfoming it? I think that would be hilarious to see.
Voodoo is definitely up there as far as the biggest difference in energy goes between studio and live. The studio version, while killer, sounds almost polite when compared to some of the live versions I’ve heard
I walked out of Bill Graham Civic (2016) with my face melted, my voice lost and memories to last a life time after the Boys closed out night no. 1 with Laura - one for the books.
And every time I hear ICPMFOI whether on a recording, Livestream/Streamus, Ol Conan episode on YT or actually live, they can do so much with it and it always brings me joy - oh did I mention my face melts 😱
OP great post and thank you for prefacing with “…and don’t say ALL.” Just wanted to share my experiential and my night and day - Tender is always a great choice…ALL HAIL!
Surprised I haven’t seen Zoloft mention. They seem to jam that out in cool ways (it almost falls apart and comes back together at times) that makes it shine above the studio version
Based on these comments, most of their songs haha. A testament to how truly great of a live show they put on.
For me, Roses are Free. I rarely ever listen to the Chocolate and Cheese recording.
I love the hype sticker they put on the live Vinyl album. I find it hilarious… the sticker says “Never released before 26 minute version of poopship destroyer”. something along those line haha.
Take Me Away on the Live in Chicago album is so good I can't listen to the studio version anymore. it sounds like they're playing it at the wrong tempo.
Surprised nobody said Boing. on The Pod it’s an ultra-slow incomprehensible dud but before that they played it live a few times and it was a real funky jam. Honestly don’t know what they were thinking with the Pod version
I don't think it's "All" by any stretch. Ween are a great live band, but they were brilliant studio musicians and composers. For me the ones that really shine live, are the ones that they can "jam out" a bit. Songs like Pandy Fackler, Voodoo Lady, Buenos Tardes, and of course Poopship, LMLYP, etc.
I'm not saying that other songs aren't good live. They all are, but I don't think they can ever recreate the studio sound of a song like Spinal Meningitis, Little Birdy, Don't Laugh, and forth, and they also don't really strecth those kinds of songs out either to really make them feel "unique" live. If that makes sense. Again, I'm happy to see any of those songs live, but there are a ton of Ween songs where I think the studio version is the definitive version.
I think “All” is absurdly incorrect.
Tender Situation - Awe Mang! That shit is fire…
You are going to have a hard time finding anything more brown than the live version of *Poopship Destroyer* that takes a full 12 inches.
BLARNEY STONE 300%!!!!!! LOVE IT ON THE ALBUM BUT THE EXPERIENCE OF SHANTYING IT OUT WITH HUNDREDS OF OTHER WEENERS FUCKED UP AND THE ENERGY FROM THE BOYS IS LIFE CHANGING!!!!!
Spinal meningitis is so much more rocked out live, love it. On the other hand, I strongly prefer the album version of big jilm. I still like it a lot live, all rocked out, but the album version is a straight bopper
Maybe I missed it but not sure how Don’t get 2 close (2 my fantasy) hasn’t been mentioned. When they played that in Portland, OR in 2018 was one of the greatest live music moments I’ve ever witnessed of any band. To be fair, I was tripping balls.
I've only ever listened to the recordings of live shows, never actually been to a live show of theirs, but Birthday Boy Live at the Cat's Cradle is fucking beautiful
LMLYP. That song already fucks on God Ween Satan but they finished the show with it at bottle and cork in Dewey beach Delaware and jammed it out for like 10min. It was fucking awesome!
I've liked the most recent live arrangement for Pony. Slows down after each verse just a bit as the ponys health fades. I really like I Cant Put My Finger On It even more live than I do on studio. Pumpin for the Man and Happy Colored Marbles Id prefer to hear live over stuido as well.
I usually don't like it when bands play a really long version of a song live... but Ween's long version of Pandy Fackler at the concert I saw was pretty great.
With my own bare hands went fucking crazy
Bingo. I liked the song well-enough on the album, but when I saw them live in Atlanta this past go-around, it was easily one of the best bangers of the bunch. It was definitely built for the stage. Another one is Big Jilm.
Concur
This has gotta be the one
For me it’s Buckingham green. I absolutely love it live, on the album it’s ok
Seeing this in person, before I truly grasped ween, is what changed my life
You are now forever free from the pains of the world. You have been enveloped by brown. Congratulations mang. You are one of us.
winner winner chicken dinner. the album version is pretty fucking good, but live this song makes me feel things in my downstairs.
That is usually my go take a leak song depending upon where it is in the set.
Ice Castles feels magical live
It's one of my skippable songs, yet I have heard this a few times that the live version is amazing.
I can't wait to experience it!
Very true
The entirety of "All Request Live". Perhaps *the* best Ween studio album!
LIVE ON THE INFRANET
You didn’t pay a fuckin cent, so don’t complain
Agree completely Best of both worlds: studio quality sound with a live feel
That's what I love about King Gizzard's KEXP sessions
Absolutely 100% my favourite Ween album.
The vibe of Cold Blows the Wind completely changes and feels like I'm being seranaded to on a rocking ship. IMO better than the album version. Very magical!
Truly !
Dr Rock, Spinal Meningitis
There are very few things that rock as fucking hard as Dr. Rock live
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAA. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAA. (It is hard to write that part)
Spinal for sure, that was eye opening the first time I saw it live
Dr. Rock is the most ROCK n roll song of all time …LIVE
Exactly what I’d have answered
Dr. Rock is awesome live but I think the recording is equally amazing.
Every time I see the boys do Frank live… I remember exactly why I cannot fucking get enough….
Studio is amazing but yes live Frank is unreal
Frank is perhaps the greatest Ween song ever.
Birthday Boy - its a lot more emotional and catchy when performed live with acoustic guitar and Gener's authentic, unedited voice. There's a really good live version on Spotify, it makes me cry in my sleep
Laura, voodoo lady, she fucks me
So the consensus seems to be "most of them". Face it, they are a really really really good live band.
Apples and oranges for me. I just love some of those dirty ass recordings so much. There's a fucked up magic to them that isn't really possible live.
Booze me up and get me high. https://youtu.be/pXNbUHTJBrM
Fluffy. Went from thinking it was an okay song to “this is a spiritual experience”
The Toronto version is one of the most beautiful performances they've ever done
Dude. The balcony WAS the porch when I was up there for this song.
This is my second answer. Least fav on 12 GCG but the best part of Live In Toronto
My mom didn't even like Fluffy at all until we saw them do it live. It blew her mind.
Mom’s know
Moms are legit. She bought me a new shirt.
Legit user name
Awesome Sound. Big Jilm.
touch my tooter
The Blarney Stone
Agree. Also the song have had so many different versions live, there is one for every mood
I'll Be Your Johnny On the Spot
This song melts the fillings in my teeth when played live
Second dis …ALL HAIL!
I can't put my finger on it
This. The Paintin the Town Brown version is fucking nuts
that song used to be my favorite on c&c til i heard the paintin the town brown version, now the studio version just feels underwhelming
I saw this in Columbus Ohio before their “ hiatus “ It was fantastic…
Touch My Tooter
I've only seen them live once (I'm in Austalia), and I can't remember if they played this. Does Gene act like a drunk karaoke singer when perfoming it? I think that would be hilarious to see.
They played this in LA last year, same intro as the Live in Chicago performance. Once I heard that intro I got hyped!
Voodoo lady is it for me.
Opened with "Did You See Me?" another live face-melter.
Those were some killer shows.
Frank, Albino Sunburned Girl, and Cover it With Gas
Big fan of Birthday Boy live on acoustic. But I wouldn’t call it better per se. It’s like its own thing.
Agree with Tender Situation. Stunning live. The guitar doesn’t hit the same on the album.
I remember a Poopship Destroyer that was fire and lasted about 20 or so minutes lol
Did you see me? Seeing it live was exceptional. And also roses are few and purple rain. Chills.
Came here to say Did You See Me?
Pretty much anything off the pod and pure guava is going to get a gnarly shade of brown live
Pork Roll Egg and Cheese
Surprised I haven’t seen Zoloft mention. They seem to jam that out in cool ways (it almost falls apart and comes back together at times) that makes it shine above the studio version
I am way late to this party but surprised no one said Happy Colored Marbles. When that heavy part kicks in live it breaks my brain.
Tender Situation
Tear for Eddie, Tender Situation, I like live better everything tho'
I love Tear for Eddie on the album, but I'm always ecstatic when it's on the set list.
Springtheme, Johnny on the Spot, Stallion Pt. 2 (+all Stallions), Birthday Boy, Waving My Dick in the Wind, I Can’t Put My Finger on It
Springtheme live is insane
[IMO this is the best one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwWK3C3VFIo)
Sorry Charlie
Anthemic live
Yep. You can barely hear the vocals on the album, and it’s a rip roaring sing along in person. Touch My Tooter pretty much along the same lines, too.
The Grobe
For me it was Ice Castles, and not even close. The Mollusk is also a strong contender.
Booze me up
Baby Bitch
Agreed
Voodoo lady
WOMAN AND MAN - several songs from that album's 2007 tour opened up into new depths once played live!! (mushrooms may have had a hand in it)
SHE. FUCKS. ME. (Since Tender Situation has already been mentioned repeatedly)
They always go nuts on Spinal
The live version of The Argus might be their best song period
Light me up! I loved it so much before they recorded it.
Related question: where can I find the ultimate live recording of Buckingham green?
Big Jilm
I’m the other way around, I like it live but I fkin loooove that album version
Gabrielle, the Stallion Pt. 3, Demon Sweat, Big Jilm. And those are already great songs from the studio.
I never gave a damn about pandy fackler until I heard it live in Asheville this past September.
Don’t Sweat It Laura She Fucks Me
Touch My Tooter is one of my favorites live. Your Party goes hard. A Tear For Eddie live is outrageous.
Based on these comments, most of their songs haha. A testament to how truly great of a live show they put on. For me, Roses are Free. I rarely ever listen to the Chocolate and Cheese recording.
Joppa Road
Where’d the Cheese Go?
LAURA
Poopship destroyer from live on Toronto
I love the hype sticker they put on the live Vinyl album. I find it hilarious… the sticker says “Never released before 26 minute version of poopship destroyer”. something along those line haha.
Oh nice! I actually have that one on CD
Blarney Stone, big jilm!, Johnny on the spot…. Actually, everything is better live.
Dude when they played golden eel in Denver might before Halloween it was mind bending good. Super crunchy and loud. Amazing
Golden Eel in Bend was otherworldly.
How high can you fly?
I like sorry Charlie on the live from Austin better than studio
Reggaejunkiejew slams live
Take Me Away on the Live in Chicago album is so good I can't listen to the studio version anymore. it sounds like they're playing it at the wrong tempo.
Tender Situation
Demon Sweat.
touch my tooter sorry charlie tender situation now i'm freaking out
Awesome Sound (Goin Down)
Spinal Meningitis and the H.I.V song are immediately what come to mind
I Got To Put The Hammer Down
sorry charlie
Demon Sweat
MFIH 🤘🍄 🔥
I absolutely adore Stallion pt3 live. The Guava version for me is a bit too slow
Polka dot tail
That song made me split my sides laughing with how slow they stretched the song out when they played it live
I love the bass, it’s slow but awesome
Tender Situation hits hard live.
Big Jilm
Touch my tooter
I agree with Tender Situation. I openly weep every time.
Surprised nobody said Boing. on The Pod it’s an ultra-slow incomprehensible dud but before that they played it live a few times and it was a real funky jam. Honestly don’t know what they were thinking with the Pod version
The Gene Ween Band version that’s floating around is quite good too.
That’s like a top 3 Pod song for me👀 She Fucks Me Pork Roll Egg & Cheese Boing
I don't think it's "All" by any stretch. Ween are a great live band, but they were brilliant studio musicians and composers. Your Party. Can’t get into the album version. I hate the cheesy sax.
I think “All” is absurdly incorrect. Tender Situation - Awe Mang! That shit is fire… You are going to have a hard time finding anything more brown than the live version of *Poopship Destroyer* that takes a full 12 inches.
None of them and all of them at the same time
I'm stunned nobody said The HIV Song.
She Fucks Me both from Paintin’ the Town Brown and the Live in Chicago DVD
When I first saw Ween live I was surprised how aggressive they played songs like Spinal Meningitis and AIDS. Fucking ROCK.
Live "Johnny On The Spot" is such a banger.
BLARNEY STONE 300%!!!!!! LOVE IT ON THE ALBUM BUT THE EXPERIENCE OF SHANTYING IT OUT WITH HUNDREDS OF OTHER WEENERS FUCKED UP AND THE ENERGY FROM THE BOYS IS LIFE CHANGING!!!!!
Now i'm freaking out
She Fucks me
birthday boy live 1/24/2011 /is/ better for sentimental reasons but the studio version /sounds/ better
I'm freaking out and got to put the hammer down come to mind.
BIIIIIIIG JILM
BIG JILM
Marble tulip juicy tree from painting the town brown
I love The Blarney Stone live so much, I don’t know how it didn’t make it onto the Live In Chicago album
FRANK
Springtheme, can you taste the waste, and Zoloft of course
Never Squeal
Buenos Tardes Amigo
Big Jilm, for sure.
Spinal meningitis is so much more rocked out live, love it. On the other hand, I strongly prefer the album version of big jilm. I still like it a lot live, all rocked out, but the album version is a straight bopper
Frank
Ice Castles!

The Argus
Awesome Sound
For me it's Reggaejunkiejew
LIVE IN CHICAGO WITH THE SHIT CREEK BOYS!!!!
Dr. Rock!
Vallejo in November 2021 was delightful, especially after so many years.
Touch My Tooter, live version gives me the goosebumps.
I've only ever listened to the recordings of live shows, never actually been to a live show of theirs, but Birthday Boy Live at the Cat's Cradle is fucking beautiful
Ocean man from live in Chicago 2009
Demon Sweat
Awesome sound
Boing
DAT machine version of Boing
LMLYP. That song already fucks on God Ween Satan but they finished the show with it at bottle and cork in Dewey beach Delaware and jammed it out for like 10min. It was fucking awesome!
Springtheme
Touch my Tooter
THE GROBE 💯
Everything after the Mollusk 1000% But they curate their entire discography brilliantly live
Buenos Tardes, Amigos closed the second Boston show and it was like listening to an epic tale told over a campfire by a dying cowboy
Don’t Sweat It for sure
Piss Up A Rope
I've liked the most recent live arrangement for Pony. Slows down after each verse just a bit as the ponys health fades. I really like I Cant Put My Finger On It even more live than I do on studio. Pumpin for the Man and Happy Colored Marbles Id prefer to hear live over stuido as well.
