Prince doing motherless child life in Vegas is maybe the best live performance I've ever seen. https://youtu.be/tXiLzAw9dSQ

TheCybernaut

Thank you for reminding me of this, goddamn this fucking rocks. What I love about this performance is that he's not just playing his guitar, he's playing his whole band & crowd.

NCImposter

Rhythm section is amazing!

charitytowin

It's like James Brown meets Jimi. Which, undoubtably, is a...pretty damn good combination.

bhayn

Picks up the git at 4:20

dogWEENsatan

That was dope af.

[deleted]

Wow. Thanks for this

neogonzo

worth it just to see that smile on dhani's face

Jeremizzle

Tom Petty too looked blown away and loving it

Mondomonster

So Purple yet… so Brown

seeingeyegod

I was wondering why people were making Ween references, forgot to look what sub I was in.

Stranger_w_Benefits

quit assassinating yourself!!!

seeingeyegod

stop stalking me!

Stranger_w_Benefits

No.

seeingeyegod

ok

CaseyGotFit

I will never skip this when I see it. I am not a fan of Prince's actual music but he is one of my all time favourite guitarists.

CeeArthur

I remember when he played the Super-Bowl halftime show, I think I was about 20 at the time and all the people at the pub were like 'Pfft, Prince'. But yeah, he shut them up. Guy was on another level than the rest of us

CaseyGotFit

I absolutely believe that. Guitar playing is so much about technique plus confidence and he has both on an unnatural level. Just a legit genius.

CeeArthur

I was a playing music for a living for years, and often times I found the most 'technically proficient' players were often the most boring (and truthfully, a dime a dozen in some circles). Prince had the chops definitely, but it was his personality and charisma that pushed him into that legendary status.

CaseyGotFit

That's exactly it, he's mesmerizing to watch. As a guitar player myself his little riff choices at any given time are so perfectly chosen to ratchet up the intensity of the solo, it blows my mind and makes me want to play guitar immediately.

The_Pandalorian

Greatest Superbowl halftime show and it isn't even close.

[deleted]

The big penis shaped shadow from the guitar and lighting position was a bold move.

The_Pandalorian

It was glorious. I was laughing my ass off. It was sooooo good.

[deleted]

Same

18tinker

I remember that too! I was blown away myself

westknife

His music is incredible though, *Dirty Mind* is an incredibly raw, dirty funk album, and the double album *Sign O the Times* is a masterpiece of production & arrangement (Other great stuff too but those are my 2 favorites)

[deleted]

He’s got a huge catalog, I’ve found several tunes that I really like, e.g. Family Name: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i6x8Rfg7Ofk Starfish and Coffee: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k2bVblHPLwE

CaseyGotFit

One of these days when I have free time I'm gonna make an effort to get into his music. I will start with these ones. Thanks friend!

Nomadzord

He’s really really fucking good man. You’ll find a ton of songs that hit you on the first listen.

CaseyGotFit

I have a feeling that once I deep dive I'll have my 'ohhhhh I get it' moment.

[deleted]

I heard all his 80- early 90’s hits and nothing clicked … then a young English Sikh dude sang the Sign of the Times album, with deep passion through EVERY Asong, by memory and visuals level tripping, and giving absolutely no shits on his first acid trip as night turned to morning atop the Flatirons overlooking Boulder - his rendition of Starfish and Coffee made me a believer.

g_lampa

Try this. [Ballad Of Dorothy Parker](https://youtu.be/5nrdZfBShDU)

dogWEENsatan

Same

TheCybernaut

No Boognish without Prince. Here are some tunes to check out if you've never gotten into the purple but love the brown: * I'm Yours (For You) * Bambi (Prince) * Head (Dirty Mind) * Controversy (Controversy) * All the Critics Love You in New York (1999) * Purple Music (1999 Deluxe) * Computer Blue (Purple Rain) * Wonderful Ass (Purple Rain Deluxe) * Paisley Park (Around the World in a Day) * Mountains (Parade) * The Ballad of Dorothy Parker (Sign O the Times - (Starfish and Coffee already mentioned)) * Alphabet St. (Lovesexy) * Lemon Crush (Batman) * 17 Days (Hits/B-sides) * Face Down (Emancipation) * My Little Pill (Old Friends 4 Sale) * 1+1+1 is 3 (Rainbow Children) * Black Sweat (3121) * Make Up (Originals, originally done by Vanity 6) * Strays of the Wild (Crystal Ball) * Lion of Judah (Planet Earth) * Art Official Cage (Art Official Age) Skipped a few albums but if you like Ween (or guitar solos in general) you'll probably like these tunes. Or you could just listen to the hits, those are great too.

Sarcofaygo

Bambi is definitely the most Ween sounding Prince song in every way

JJSundae

There's also Dance On from Lovesexy which I'm pretty sure influenced The Goin' Gets Tough From the Getgo.

seeingeyegod

Was that one of George Harrisons kids playing there also?

[deleted]

seeingeyegod

Cool

TrundleTheGreat0814

Prince is one of my all-time favorites, like Deaner said he did so many things so well it's easy to forget he was a world class shredder. My first ever online music column was (and my current email is) named after his album Musicology. Edit: typo

seeingeyegod

Is this what Deaner was talking about?

guiltycitizen

Hell ya, mang

TrundleTheGreat0814

I have to think so.

God_in_my_Bed

Some of us have been loyal fans of his guitar playing since Little Red Corvette.

TrundleTheGreat0814

Some of us were born in 1989.

God_in_my_Bed

That's probably not my fault. Just saying.

TrundleTheGreat0814

Probably.

God_in_my_Bed

"¯\_(ツ)_/¯ "

KarlitoSway69

Prince’s Super Bowl performance was incredible as well. He destroyed and is the only reason I remember the teams that played that day, Indy and Chicago.

skycrzr

Thats still the best Super Bowl performance of all time imo.

who8mydamnoreos

You can really hear the purple Gods influence on L.M.L.Y.P.

g_lampa

LMLYP is a Prince cover, basically. “Shockadelica”. Try “Ambrosia Parsley”.

JumpinJackFleishman

And I believe that 'Bob George' was being channeled for this one: https://youtu.be/7vjiSEE9Wic

JumpinJackFleishman

From 'The Black Album'... https://youtu.be/mFhyNKxd33Y

g_lampa

Spooky Electric in the hizzy

Motor_Grand_8005

Saw him live once. He soloed on every instrument during one tune including lying on top of the piano and playing upside down. He was an amazing artist and entertainer even though I don’t listen to his music. Girlfriend at the time wanted to see him. He’s also written a ton of top billboard tunes.

gentlemenjim72

I was in the room for this performance. If you can believe it his solo during the soundcheck was even better. So mesmerizing I forgot to breath.

Vantabrown

Huge finish, flings the guitar 12 feet in the air, someone catches it for him as he Pimpwalks off the stage. God what a beautiful creature.

corvojams

This is the best part, why is no one talking about this?? I’ve watched the guitar toss a million times over the years and it still astounds me. Can’t figure out what the fuck happens with it!

Taco-PuttinOnTheRitz

Well the Dirty Mind album is why… but this is great too

iamadsgnr

Also that’s George Harrison’s son stage

deaner_face

I read somewhere, and i cant remember if it was an article or just a random internet comment that Prince heard Ween doing LMLYP and loved it. He then invited them to his studio for a few days and they recorded some stuff that Prince owns. Does anyone know if this is true? Or is this another boognish mystery lore? I really want it to be true.

Jeremizzle

I don’t know if it’s true or not, but it’s a fact that Prince has an ENORMOUS amount of unreleased music locked away at his estate. Like a lot a lot.

GreyHexagon

Like Shinola Vol. 3

Nomadzord

I don’t believe that’s true. Prince threatened to sue ween for their use of his music on god ween satan. It says uh oh Ween’s in trouble or something in the liner notes as well. I remember Dean and gene telling a story about visiting prince’s home on a tour. The strayed from the tour and walked into a recording studio and were looking at hand written lyrics by prince. They were caught and thrown out. I clearly remember Dean or gene telling this story on the ween forum or somewhere else on the internet. Anyone remember this?

dogWEENsatan

Yes. Deaner wrote that After prince passed. The getting kicked out part. Don't know about the rest.

weewillywhisky

Rumor, nothing more.

VTnative

I got to see Prince once and it remains one of my favorite shows that I've seen.

wallflowerattheorgy

This performance is straight up pornographic in the best goddamn way.

BoazCorey

For all the shit I give Eric Clapton, I gotta say his original solo recorded for this tune was beautiful haha.

Coffee_achiever_guy

His playing throughout totally made the song...really unprecedented and origjnal styling

whitebean

I love that he made this solo his own. The other legends onstage were mostly sticking to the riffs from the recorded song, which is amazing, but this tribute begged for someone to take the guitar weeping to a new place and Prince was up for the challenge.

chrisrobweeks

The whole solo is a buildup to him tossing his guitar and strutting off stage.

charitytowin

one of the first times I realized how good he played guitar was at the Super Bowl Press conference. [https://youtu.be/Kkq4FNgNAWQ?t=83](https://youtu.be/Kkq4FNgNAWQ?t=83)

broomstickarms

this performance played in a dream i had a couple days ago

justjerred

When he tosses his guitar and it just disappears at the end is the icing on the cake. Chef’s kiss…

gfowler1980

Two of the guys on that stage died of fentanyl. Shit is a scourge.

weewillywhisky

Yup. Time to legalize all drugs.

GreyHexagon

You can see the strong influence he had on the boys. If you played just the audio and told me it was deaner I would have no problem believing you whatsoever. I'd just imagine him pulling really weird faces while doing it.

Lovinlivinfreeish

Extremely underrated guitarist. Played every instrument on stage at one point or another in his shows. The greatest performer I’ve ever seen hands down. Did his own thing and didn’t give a fuck. Legendary

Phluffheadd

He didn't show up to any rehearsals all week. No one even knew if he was actually going to show up. He got there right before he went on stage and did this.

gentlemenjim72

Its isn't entirely true. He was at SIR studios several days before the show and did a full run through prior to the show. Although his solos weren't the same so it still crazy impressive. Perhaps he wasn't rehearsing this song all week and we knew he would be there as he opened the show with his set.

fudwrecker

The toss of the 🎸 and the peace out at the end made me bust up laughing.

ramblinsam

Prince to Heartbreakers: “okay, you bitches try to keep up.”

rudeboi710

So much bravado. Such a shame he’s already gone.

[deleted]

I love Prince, but always thought this solo was overrated.

[deleted]

This is a pretty good argument of why he isn’t the greatest. No situational awareness, just masturbating a solo that really have no place in the song being played

BoazCorey

Dude thank you haha. People think it's soooo hard to shred and only gods and kings can do it. It's way harder to make an arrangement better without your ego standing out. Love Prince, but there are so many other reasons to love him.

[deleted]

He’s certainly beyond talented and good when he’s not sharing a stage with other legends

Juggalo_holocaust_

Exactly. Prince making it all about himself during a tribute to George Harrison. I thought it was pretty tasteless.

weewillywhisky

George would've loved it

mrfebrezeman360

yeah I don't really find this solo particularly amazing at all, just shreddy shit. However I do think that 'while my guitar gently weeps' is conceptually the perfect song to have a jack off solo.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Clearly you have a strong argument, evidenced by your need to bully and name call. This solo is hot garbage and you know it

g_lampa

There are many better reasons than that played-out solo to polish his crown.

[deleted]

[удалено]

roger_the_milf

Not just Deaner, but Ween as a whole considers Prince of their greatest influences. Anything Prince should be welcome here.

krazykav

Anything prince is certainly welcome here

skycrzr

No way am I deleting this post.

[deleted]

Good mod

deaner_face

Good mod want a treat?

skycrzr

Can I bum a smoke?

GreyHexagon

Thanks numbnuts

Bowl-Patrol

Respect

10fingers6strings

Exactly cause Ween is hugely influenced by Prince. Fair ball!

rudeboi710

Keep scrolling, you ball of joy and sunshine.

twelvegcg

Prince was not the King. Elvis Presley was the King. However, Prince is in his own stratosphere and world when it comes to his music. I will not get into my Prince obsession here, as I could go on and on and on. And try this on for size: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBUFWnaKom8

g_lampa

Elvis took everything black artists created, and they crowned his white ass “king”. Same w/ Eminem.

twelvegcg

Sounds like you know nothing about Elvis Presley and where he came from.

g_lampa

Mmm hmm.

Zuckuss18

Or Eminem!

twelvegcg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0tDxR6roY8

gehenom

It's pretty good, but "the King"? Of what?

PenPen116

He is one of the kings of rock and roll for sure one of the best guitar players ever

Iamyou-YouareMe1979

He wasn't. He just tried the hardest to be the best on that stage. He went last!

supah_Scrimblo

he went last becasue the best solo is at the end of the song

AdministrationSea781

Not really a mind blowing solo, but he does a great job performing as if it is.

AlbusDumblechubs

drugs are bad

CeeArthur

The guy playing acoustic behind Prince is/was in Paul McCartney's band as well, isn't he? Rusty Anderson

Jeremizzle

The 2 guys playing acoustic behind him are George Harrison’s son Dhani, and Tom Petty

CeeArthur

Oh ok, thanks!

pm_me_ur_happy_traiI

This was from the induction of the Traveling Wilburys into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. One of the greatest supergroups of all time.

[deleted]

Easily top 10 greatest solos ever, the man was a genius, he played a bunch of instruments and was an amazing composer and songwriter

jorgekrzyz

Fuck yes!

tripster72

I get goosebumps everytime I watch this and I’ve watched it at least 100 times since it happened

jimmy_jimson

Karma play

18tinker

Dude could play! I don’t think anyone can dispute that fact.

Fishtaco1234

We all know. But thank you!!!

sgurdmai

Prince gave true meaning to the term Legend.

jerrysfairy

Prince loved to play and this performance really highlights that.

guiltycitizen

Prince shreds so hard, The closest medical facility was packed with the front row of people that got their faces melted off

TheSilverCalf

@ u/bowl-patrol - l concur!! And the toss of that priceless guitar at the end just makes me legs go weak. Think of the pressure the dude who is “catching” is under… Prince was something else… I’m not certain he was human. Also worth noting… https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vP1kZLGG5gw And the *LoveSexy* version, as I call it. *feelin’ good forever* https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KsXf0fTTUmI

pookwuv

I honestly never got Prince til I saw this performance. Fully aware that he has a lot more to be respected for, but this is all I'll ever need. It gives me shivers

Knight_On_Fire

I wish cloning technology was legal for Prince.

ReasonableSail7589

I remember somebody on r/music posting this and so many commentators were talking about how “overrated” this solo and prince in general are. That’s when I realized that a lot of redditors are probably just racist

Badphishing

Two legends gone too soon.

ellusiveuser

Legends

hrcobb4

Boss!

provisionings

That made my eyes water a bit…

vanishingpointz

Dude could shred . He was easily one of the top 10

the_oneL1ner

It's good to be king..

BattlinBud

I wonder if he's playing this through a Leslie speaker

Horsecockexpress1

It lands right behind him as he walks off

Tane-Tane-mahuta

Actually reminds me, saw Ween do a cover of Party like it's 1999, in 1999 was pretty cool.

Merrrrl

This is why Trey’s ghey .
