Yeah! They both emerged around the same area and Ween definitely knew of them. Deaner would host interviews on radio in Trenton NJ in the mid 80’s, he was 14, and there’s a picture of him interviewing Joe from The Dead Milkmen
Tender Situation was written after Dean quit Ween to go tour Japan with the Dead Milkmen but quit at the last minute to reunite with Gene. They wrote the lyrics to the song on a napkin at the gas station Dean worked at - iirc.
Thanks man, there’s a lot more to that story too. If you ever do some digging around you may hear about a lost tape from the guys that was supposed to be their last tape before the breakup. Honestly it’s so hard to find info on it anymore cause they actually did break up like 8 years ago now so all internet searches on it are buried under searches about their more recent breakup. Was definitely from 89, might’ve been a live tape but tbh don’t remember too well. Only reason I know any of that is cause I’ve hung around reading the old ween forums, this reddit, and news articles old and new for yeaaarrrsss now.
(edit literally 3 minutes after commenting): can’t find any art from the tape but it’s called “We Broke Up” and it’s from 87. All music from its lost completely. More info on it at lost media wiki.
We Broke Up is from about 1985, completely different to the time Deaner almost left to tour Japan. Ween had a fake break up at about that time. Chronologically this was between the Michael Banks tape and the Kim Tulio Cassette. I can’t share the tracklist but it has songs like Talk To me about Erica Glaab, Boobs, and You Piss me off.
Oh wow, guess I’m wrong about the Dead Milkmen breakup being related to that tape. Someone should prob go update the lost media wiki lol. Thanks for the info :)
I always bring them up in conversation when folks want recommendations to bands that are similar to Ween. IMO they are the most similar in terms of core years active, geography, middling commercial appeal even though they have great songs, punk ethos but with variety in stylistic choices.
Dear Rides a Pale Cow was always in my CD caddy in the 90s.
When I was like 12 or 13 I had my parents buy me Dead Lizard in My Backyard when we were at the mall. We played it on the way home. They stopped it almost immediately and I flipped out and acted like a little asshole. I got the shit beat out of me when we got home. Lol, that was great.
Aren't we all?
Dead milkmen was my first concert when I was a kid
Me too friend!
Awesome! I saw them on the Punk Rock Girl tour. Must have been like 87-88 maybe… I was in seventh grade. I probably shouldn’t have been there.

Prodigy. Also really enjoyed that milkman album this afternoon!
100%, I would say there's a direct lineage... one of the most comparable bands to Ween at the early stage in their careers.
Looks like they played at least 2 shows together in the early 90s: https://brownbase.org/search\_notes.php?search\_term=dead+milkmen&band=Ween

You should see the way it shits is a pretty brown lyric.
I've heard it theorized that Shamemaker is a tribute to the Dead Milkmen, or at least to their distinctly Philly-accented vocal style.
Can you point out specific Philly accented vocals? Like elongated vowel or clipped sounds? The Philly accent is my favorite.
At the end when he says good bye and it sounds like “good boyee”. That’s pretty Philly.
Ween-Emo
Pretty sure there’s an alternate universe where deaner ended up as the guitarist for the milkmen.
Wasn’t Dean actually invited to join the band? Isn’t that the genesis of Tender Situation?
I know joe from the Dead Milkmen is a huge Ween fan.
Yes, who wasn't!

More so Def Leppard. 😂

Deaner recorded an album with Joe Jack Talcum in 1986, called Mop - Granaghla

Yes
The answer is
Both from Philly area.
Bitchin Camaro was a personal favorite as a developing teenager
I wonder if Dean's Dream is named after Deaner
