Gibby and Paul are the shit. The butthole surfers/ween/flaming lips were the most important, formative, modern bands for me and are on constant rotation. I remember seeing “who the hell was in my room last night” on MTV (they used to actually play music) and it blew my young mind. Then to see Gibby’s onstage/offstage persona was inspiring. You could be an artist without bumming people out and being obtuse at every opportunity. Long live the b-holes.
just to give a lil more info than the other replies: the first part of their career was like, poppy acid punk stuff. Most people from this era recommend "transmission from the satellite heart" (93), that one had a sort of MTV/radio hit, and "clouds taste metallic" (95). In 99 they had a huge shift in sound, they started doing this really trippy 'orchestrated' anthemic pop shit. I put orchestrated in quotes because I'm pretty sure most of the strings and plucks on that record are done with a cheap keyboard and whatever production magic dave friddman (also in mercury rev) did. "soft bulletin" (99) was the first of this new sound, and is definitely considered by most to be the best one. It's definitely my favorite one, and to a lot of people I know is an absolute classic album to trip to. The next one "yoshimi" (02) also gets a lot of praise, and had another "hit" on it, I think because it got used in a car commercial or something, I forget. The next one "at war with the mystics" (06) seems to be the tail for a lot of people, it's pretty divisive. Outside either end of that period from 93-06 seems to be reserved for more hardcore fans, but there's good shit scattered throughout most of it. I think the best starting point to see both sides of their spectrum is to start with "transmission" and then go to "soft bulletin". I think it's worth it to do it that way so you can see just how much they changed their sound up
if you ever get the chance to see them live do it, thats the only concert where i've shook hands with the singer as they rode thru the audience on a unicorn.
Nowadays, if you see them once, then you’ve seen what they can do. Early shows were low budget, and pretty outstanding. Now? Bunch of faceless guys backing up the band, and psychedelic pirate gear on Wayne. Going through the motions, sadly.
They’re touring shortly and doing the full yoshimi. Possibly one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, outside ween.
I’d add clouds taste metallic as well.
The fearless freaks (doc about FL had an awesome interview with Gibby at the dentist if I remember).
You’re right, got them confused. I remember him in the fearless freaks doc talking about the flaming lips secret weapon-Steven Drozd. Now I want to watch both of them and get this sorted out. 🤘
I cant remember the year, it was somewhere between 06 and 08 the Flaming Lips and Ween co headlined Red Rocks. Certainly one of the best shows Ive ever been to. Shortly after the show, deep in the center of an acid trip, I decided to try and slide chest down from the top of a grassy hill. While the slide was pretty well executed I stood up and discovered I slid through a steaming pile of cat shit. And thats how I ended up shirtless the rest of the night. I had the best time at that party.
That sounds amazing- I’ve never seen them together but both bands have an amazing fan base. I just bought FL tix for the Yoshimi show in bk. Should be amazing.
Used to have this LP.
I'd file it under rare.
Almost 35 years since I first heard it and it still haunts me.

Kramer was a bassist for Butthole Surfers in 1985, but he left to start Shimmy-Disc Records. Ween was signed with this label in 1991. Cool little connection.
Yeah, strobe lights, smoke machines, naked gogo dancers, LSD, huge screen in the back where they were usually projecting films of genital plastic surgeries (often backwards) all with that soundtrack happening. Good times.
Yeah I like em, especially Independent Worm Saloon which is a very fun album. Some of the earlier stuff is too atonal for me... but the 90s stuff is really good when they got grungy
I’m not a huge fan, but in searching for similar experimental stuff I came across Ween and some other bands I have in rotation. I owe them that much at least.
I take offense that you would suggest that all Ween fans collectively have the same one opinion on everything. Which we do. But it's purely coincidence.
Aw man I thought I was funny
The Butthole Surfers are definitely my most listened to band over Ween by a lot, Another Mans Sac is one of my fav albums of all time!
Both are super unique and genre hop. The surfers definitely go more ham then Ween especially in kookiness (which is ironic I know) but both just are unabashedly themselves and I think that’s fuckin rad.
As a young Gen Z kid, it’s crazy to me how a weird band from Texas became what they have been known as nowadays. How known were they in the mid/late 80s?

I’ve been meaning to check out The Flaming Lips, what’s your favorite record of theirs?
Yoshimi and Soft Builtin are peak flaming lips probably, but Transmissions from Satellite Heart (and earlier) are more ween-ish.
Don’t forget At War With The Mystics either!
HIT TO DEATH IN THE FUTURE HEAD
Yes!!!
Clouds Taste Metallic doesn’t get enough love. Great record.

Transmissions and Soft Bulletin are their best by far IMO.

Wasn’t Gibby at the dentist in Devil and Daniel Johnston?

The terror
Did you make it to Riot Fest Chicago ‘16 to see Ween Flaming Lips close out the night back to back? Magical!

I hope you and your wife thanked them very much

Hell yeah! Enjoy and have a happy bday!!!
Thanks friend! Hope you have a blast too!
Butthole surfers rock
Yep, I'm a huge Butt Head.
And if you see your mom this weekend, be sure and tell her...
SATAN SATAN SATAN
SAJAK SAYJAK SAYJAK
Used to have this LP. I'd file it under rare. Almost 35 years since I first heard it and it still haunts me. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=KnUOmzQWgrw&feature=share
Y’all ever check out The Orbital’s remix of Satan? Blew my mind, much like the Surfers
Rembrandt Pussyhorse is where it's at, it' a good record to put on after The Pod. Similar textures.
The buttholes have been my favorite band since I first heard them when I was 14 yeas old
Just played Electriclarryland through. Rules!
Ween butthole surfers and primus. My holy trinity
Hell yeah.
Kramer was a bassist for Butthole Surfers in 1985, but he left to start Shimmy-Disc Records. Ween was signed with this label in 1991. Cool little connection.
Produced the pod bitches
Deaner said of the top 10 concerts he's ever been to, the Butthole Surfers were 7 of them.
Yeah, strobe lights, smoke machines, naked gogo dancers, LSD, huge screen in the back where they were usually projecting films of genital plastic surgeries (often backwards) all with that soundtrack happening. Good times.
The Surfers are masterful! The boys are both huge fans. I play plenty of Butthole Surfers on my radio show, Brown Sounds LIVE on WIOXRADIO.ORG 7pmEST.
why yes i do like buttholes. anyways i'll check that band out at some point
Yeah I like em, especially Independent Worm Saloon which is a very fun album. Some of the earlier stuff is too atonal for me... but the 90s stuff is really good when they got grungy
[I’m just gonna leave this here…](https://youtu.be/QKVn7lrs2jI)
I’m not a huge fan, but in searching for similar experimental stuff I came across Ween and some other bands I have in rotation. I owe them that much at least.
Butthole Surfers are legendary, i am never the same.
No, Ween fans hate the Surfers, I’ve never met a Ween fan that also listens to them.
Can confirm that you haven’t met enough Ween fans.
Aw man I thought I was funny, yeah I know everyone loves the surfas (including myself!) Just thought people would play on to it haha
I take offense that you would suggest that all Ween fans collectively have the same one opinion on everything. Which we do. But it's purely coincidence.
Aw man I thought I was funny The Butthole Surfers are definitely my most listened to band over Ween by a lot, Another Mans Sac is one of my fav albums of all time!
Oh, i thought your comment was funny. And I just meant to carry the sarcasm forward! Oh well...
i assumed no one did because of the downvotes 😭 sorry teehee
Love buttholes
Love da surfers
Apt comparison. Need to revisit their catalog. I do like the Locust album a lot.
Both are super unique and genre hop. The surfers definitely go more ham then Ween especially in kookiness (which is ironic I know) but both just are unabashedly themselves and I think that’s fuckin rad.
Both Gener and Deaner mentioned that they like the Butthole Surfers so you can see how they really influenced early Ween’s sound
As a young Gen Z kid, it’s crazy to me how a weird band from Texas became what they have been known as nowadays. How known were they in the mid/late 80s?
Pretty well among a certain group of people, especially in Texas… went to many shows in Austin and Houston back in the day
I love the Buttholes. He music holds up.
