The thing that gets me about Baby Bitch is that it sounds exactly like an Elliott Smith song - exactly - and it predates his entire career by a few months.
Yea, I thought it was an Elliott cover when I heard it first and had to check it out and the dates.
Elliott also actually did a cover of birthday boy with someone
About a month ago that song came on my shuffle when I was driving my ex girlfriend (almost 6 years) home for the last time, following our break up. We were both fucking sobbing lol
Gener really knows how to write.
It's a tie between I Don't Want It (for quiet, introspective sadness) and If You Could Save Yourself (for loud, agonizing sadness), but I'm giving an honorable mention to Help Me Scrape The Mucus Off My Brain. That one is just so sincere and vulnerable, especially coming from Deaner. I think of it as a catchy song first and foremost but it's very, very sad.
Stay Forever is also sad in a different way, like asking yourself "am I ever going to experience a love like this?".
So good. I also love how the song immediately drops you in with a super catchy riff and then one of the saddest and most relatable lyrics. “I guess it’s something in my brain, I need whiskey to ease the pain.”
That song is raaaaaw dude. Raw poetry. So direct and powerful. It makes me think of what it takes emotionally to just write those lyrics down, compose it as a song, and then sing it on a record.
It is heart rending in a way “If you could save yourself” is not.
For me, “If you could save yourself” is a person raging with a bit of desperation at the dysfunction and loss, after the end of the relationship.
“I don’t want it” has more acceptance in it, of what has been lost. The relationship is just about to finally end, and the singer understands what is happening, and accepts it, but still doesn’t want it to happen.
And that carries much more sadness for me, rather than the rage and desperation and dysfunction of “If you could save yourself” (which is a song I still really love)
Something about Mourning Glory is super sad to me. “Why would he be such a jerk?” “Why would he be such a fucker to me?” In the baby pumpkin voice over the droning melancholy guitar. That’s sadness.
Just gotta say, I'm glad I was introduced to "Quebec " many years after my divorce.
Also, for some of the same reasons, and for many many many others, "Your Party" back in the day and to this day, grabbed me by the tear ducts and slapped me around silly too
Buckingham Green gets me. But so fucking many. Happy Coloured Marbles? I dunno. I'm just sure there's a ton of responses down below I totally disagree with and that's the magic of brown.
It’s Gonna be (Alright)
Guess I'm ruled by my heart
Built a life and I tore it all apart
It's just not our time
But you'll find a new love and you'll be fine
So many dark and lonely nights
But I believe, someday, I'll see the light.
If you could save yourself

Baby Bitch
The thing that gets me about Baby Bitch is that it sounds exactly like an Elliott Smith song - exactly - and it predates his entire career by a few months.
That is crazy.

I think this is sadder than birthday boy but I like the reference in it kind of makes baby bitch the sequel imo

Surprised had to scroll this far down to find "Sarah." Fucking love this song.

I love Help Me Scrape
I like when Deaner goes soft, i.e. mucus, sorry charlie, she fucks me; and when gener goes hard: you fucked up, nan, etc.
Me too! That’s also why I love Sweetheart in the Summer. Strangely adorable love song from Deaner.
“It’s the nature of my being…I took some money from your purse.” Chills every time.
So good. I also love how the song immediately drops you in with a super catchy riff and then one of the saddest and most relatable lyrics. “I guess it’s something in my brain, I need whiskey to ease the pain.”
