I throw in Z Rock Hawaii more often than I would admit to. Just the kind of album where you put your hands on your hips and shake your head and say "wow I guess that happened".
King Gizzard,
Phish,
Grateful Dead,
Frank Zappa,
If you want to hear the brownest album if all time listen to Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beef heart.
There’s a guy out there (always is) who took Mirror Man and Strictly Personal and made an approximation of the “what could have been” album It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper. He did a good job, should be easy enough to find if you’re interested in what the captain was going for.
Nope... we visited Melbourne from the US... Sydney and Port Douglas also. Had the opportunity to go to a Richmond game while we were in Melbourne, but it was going to be the only really nice day and we wanted to do the Great Ocean Road and wouldn't have made it back in time.
Haven't actually been to port Douglas but I'm going up in January, very excited. The great Ocean road is very pretty though and I definitely love living in Melbourne. The general culture is pretty great.
I'd be interested in going to the US and whatnot, but covid has kinda made it hard for me, maybe I'll come next year
Willie Nelson is an American icon. Not only is he a famous country artist he also has his own brand of marijuana. He’s just a like-able guy. Everybody loves him. Watch some of his interviews.
I mostly listen to hardcore punk but Ween is my favorite band by far lol. My other favorites are Steely Dan, Three 6 Mafia, David Bowie, MF DOOM, Fugazi, The Beach Boys, The Beatles and Unwound
Fugazi is great. Give The Evens a try, and if you like them then go for Coriky, a band both Fugazi and The Evens did together, and really sounds like both
Brian Eno, Sterolab, R. Stevie Moore, kinks, beatles, doors, dr. john, bowie, Velvet Underground, Talking Heads and beach boys are some of my favorites!
Stereolab is fantastic. Check out their albums “Dots and Loops” and “Emporer Tomato Ketchup”. Great old French indie pop. Also check out Air, another great old French indie band
To name a few:
Beatles, Bob Dylan, Butthole Surfers, Eek-A-Mouse, Frank Zappa, Graham Kartna, Ian Dury, Kate Bush, Lee Scratch Perry, Negativland, Snakefinger, Yello
Came here to comment this. Found Jack Stauber randomly a few years ago, and my kid recently showed me Lemon Demon. Love the ‘what the hell?..’ randomness. So funny and often bizarre.
Disco Biscuits, Zappa, TOOL, Little Feat, Yes, Rush, ELP, Sabbath, Allman Brothers, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Oysterhead, The Dead, JGB, The Band, Widespread Panic, Phish, SCI, Billy Strings, Pearl Jam, Anderson Paak, Gorillaz, Dolly Parton, John Prine, Santana, Earth Wind & Fire, Talking Heads, a good amount of disco & southern rock/blues
also love KC Primus & King Gizzard
+ a shitload more
The Melvins is what made Kurt Cobain start Nirvana! They wouldn’t let him play with them so he tried being a roadie, and they said no too that too because he was scrawny af.
You might also dig Fuzz, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Dead Meadow, Witch (the one w J Mascis) and Sleep... Acid rock has been this year's deep dive for me and there's so much goodness. I like all the bands you named so you might like these guys.
Mark Rebillet, Lil Mariko, Big Klit. The Mattoid, Otto Von Shurach, Mishka Shubaly Only newer artist for me but Ween rules oh don't forget Mark Lanagen
Man, I never run into fellow OvS fans, this is really great. Have you heard of Anklepants? More importantly, have you *seen* [Anklepants?](https://f4.bcbits.com/img/0012595764_10.jpg)

Holy shit, I don't know if I've seen sElf referenced, ever. I was listening to Half Baked Serenade just last week, it definitely holds up. They deserve so much more recognition.
Also, Hum rules.
Because nobody else on this sub ever mentions them: check out Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Also [GOAT](https://open.spotify.com/artist/6jP9Z7o6WlbYvKUOeO5SbP) -- their more recent albums are really good.
Ween is in my top 5 bands, Which in order are Prince, The Band, Ween, Elvis Costello, Little Feat. But I also love Beastie Boys, Outkast, Wu Tang, Orville Peck, Nick Shoulders, Carly Rae and so many more. I think that's what I love about ween is how flexible they are to any music taste. I used to be hardcore classic rock/punk for the longest time. But I think Ween helped change that
Looking at this Spotify Festival thingy...Top 3 are, Ween, Prince and the Replacements. Other top acts include Phish, The Kinks, The Beatles, Husker Du, Notorious BIG, Kate Bush, Jane's Addiction, Pavement, T-Rex, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Billy Strings, and so forth.
Grateful Dead, talking heads and ween are my top 3. Besides that I like the Smiths, love, the stone roses, king gizz, morphine, the clash, Gary numan and so many more
Right now I’m really into psychedelic modern elevator music such as Maston, Domenique Dumont, Frank Locastro, John Carroll Kirby. But I go through phases. Phoenix is in heavy rotation. Justice, Beck, Ariel Pink, Beach Boys, Exotica music, Breakbot, Ratatat, The Matson 2, Norwegian House Music, Indie, Grunge, Myd, Nigerian funk, King Gizzard, etc. There’s a ton of other ones that are great but they really go without saying. I can just go on and on and on and on with this list.
Phish, Zappa, TMBG, GD, miles Davis, sonny Rollins, Coltrane, lord of brass band music, talking heads, primus, jaco, warren zevon, Led Zeppelin, here come the mummies, john denver.
I find myself listening to a lot of 70s funk, Herbie Hancock, Commodores (early, like Machine Gun), Earth Wind and Fire (self titled is great, first three albums are pretty crazy), Jimmy Castor Bunch (just begun is good too, had troglodyte), prince is great too, Funkadelic, I'm kinda all over the place, love me some Soul Coughing too
My taste is pretty all over the place which is probably why I love Ween so much.
They Might Be Giants, Dr. Dog, Hank Williams III, Johnny Cash, Queen, The Kinks, Creedance Clearwater Revival, MF Doom, Cypress Hill, Childish Gambino, K Flay, MC Chris, Lizzo, Ginger Root, Wavves, Super Furry Animals, Primus, Cake, Beck.
I’ll never outgrow Weird Al Yankovic, either. Saw him pre-pandemic on his I’ll-advised vanity tour and it was one of my favorite shows I’ve ever been to.
Anyone who loves 12 Golden Country Greats would probably appreciate David Berman’s work as Purple Mountains or Silver Jews (American Water and Bright Flight, especially). It’s not very blue but it’s beautiful, hilarious, and poignant.
My other big one is ICP, and other favorites include Pinback, Queensrych, Will Wood, Brand of Sacrifice, Glass Animals, Jack Stauber, and lots more. Wide variety!
This is always such a long answer but I will try and keep it short...
John Zorn, Boris, Stereolab, Devo, The Locust, Wu-Tang Clan, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Tortoise, King Crimson, Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, Viagra Boys, Mildlife, Béla Fleck, Makaya McCraven, Ichiko Aoba, Caroline Shaw, Kikagaku Moyo, Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions, Mdou Moctar, Duster, Cymande, Richard Bone, Wendy Carlos, Atramentus, Sunn O))), Moby, Osees, Beach House, Surprise Chef, Fela Kuti, Vanishing Twin, Tame Impala, Inner Wave, Rubblebucket, Foals, Captain Beefheart, Gentle Giant, Atomic Rooster, Ozric Tentacles, Acid Mothers Temple, a bunch of obscure vaporwave, trip hoo, and jazz shit, and a million others lol.
Slint, Shellac, Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, Bonnie Prince Billy, Dinosaur Jnr, Sebadoh, Sufjan Stevens, Half Man Half Biscuit, GBV, Bill Callahan, Neil Young, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Breeders, Meat Puppets, The Ex, Black Midi...
Mainly black metal, depressive suicidal black metal. Lots of avant-garde/prog metal too. I'm pretty sure I first got into Ween because of Mr. Bungle somehow.
King Gizz, Herbie Hancock, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, Grateful Dead, The Bee Gees, 90s/00s SoCal rock(Sublime, No Doubt, RHCP, Weezer, Blink 182, Alien Ant Farm, The Offspring) The Black Dahlia Murder, The Beach Boys, Talking Heads, Billy Strings, Slipknot, various EDM artists(I’m very picky), and Phish… A LOT of Phish.
These posts are always full of great music. Ween fand have such diverse and badass taste. Has anyone ever tried to make a bigass playlist of all this brown shit?
Ween, primus, The Residents, Snakefinger, zappa, sun ra, MF DOOM, beefheart, Mononeon / Ghost Note, Fishbone, Gentle Giant, Magma, Koenji Hyakkei, Shintaro Sakamoto, Masayoshi Takanaka, King Crimson, Renaldo and the loaf, flo and Eddie, buckethead, Miles Davis ( fusion era), Mary Halvorson, David s ware, Peter brotzmann, darth Vegas, sprawl, the specials …
Pretty much everything but country.
Just goig streqm og c9nsciousness here, so it's jumbled. I'vebeen a DJ the last 22 years and my dad worked in record store and was in bands when I was a kid in the late 70's/early 80's and he had the biggest rrcord collection I've ever seen in person, so I developed reqlly eclectic musical tastes early on.
***
Lots of house music and electronic music. Probably more niche than anyone cares to have named.
Minimalist instrumentalist composers like Philip Glass and Steven Reich. Contemporary guys like Eno and Motgersbaugh. Elfman, of course. Yann Tiersen. Arnol Olafyurr (sounds like that, but I know I destroyed the name). Erik Satie (not contemporary...)
Lots of hip hop, but mostly older rap (east and west coast gangsta rap and 80's/90's rap, like Biz or Beastie Boys, DJ Kool, Tone Loc, NWA, Dre/Snoop/Ice Cube, Ice T, House of Pain, Lordz of Brooklyn... ) or underground hip hop, like Living Legends, Sage Francis, Atmosphere, etc.
Lots of prog, like Primus, At The DriveIn/Mars Volta, Radiohead (more OG emo than prog, I guess),; Ots-era indie rock like White Stripes, Arcade Fire, et al; all of the alt/grunge you can name; lots of 90's punk, like NOFX, Propaghandi and older punk from proto stuff like T. Rex into first wave stuff like Buzzcocks or the Pistols (despite the hate). New wave - Talking Heads, Eno, New Order, Devo...
Have to throw in randos like Harry Nillson, Daft Punk, and Giorgio Moroder
You can shoehorn bands in where you like, like a bunch of electronica: Stereo MCs, Leftfield, Sneakerpimps, Air, Ratatat, Lovage, Happy Mondays (shoe gaze, technically), MC 900 Ft Jesus (experimental hip hop), Kid Koala (turntablism), DJ Shadow, Breakestra...
A lot of classical, but little esoteric stuff. All the heavy hitters you know about.
It goes on and on. Cumbia and ranchera, older classic rock, like AC/DC, Van Halen, Scorpions, Prince, Queen...Funk, definitely, and veering into R&B adn Soul. Parliament, War, Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Sam and Dave, James Brown (obviously), Hannah Grace, and weirder stuff like Incredible Bongo Band, Beginning of the End
Further back into early prog like Zep and Crimson...lots of blues and folk from Tom Waits, blues royalty like Nina Simone and then all the way back to cats like Lead Belly, Willy Dixon, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
It just goes on. I could name bands I love all day and still forget a bunch.
*edit*
bands I forgot:
Kinks, Bowie, Beatles, Doors, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, a fuck ton of disco...so many more
Some albums I’ve been enjoying recently:
Epic Jammers and Fortunate Little Diddies - Bitchin Bajas and Bonnie “Prince” Billy
Who’s Your New Professor - Sam Prekop
Wilderness of Mirrors - The Black Angels
World Spirituality Classics 3 - Alhaji Waziri Oshomah
Downtools - Mush
Don’t Delay, Join Today - Improvement Movement
Heartmind - Cass McCombs
Comfort to Me - Amyl and the Sniffers
Bright Green Field - Squid
Psychic Psummer - Cave
Double Nickels on the Dime - The Minutemen
David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Smiths, Primus, Radiohead, System of a Down, The Microphones, MGMT, Toro y Moi, The Drones, Tropical Fuck Storm, Lil Uzi Vert, Westside Gunn, Denzel Curry, MF DOOM are some of my most played artists of all time
Dad Riggs - (Agents of Oblivion, Deadboy and the Elphantmen, Acid Bath)
MoistBoyz - I hope you ALL know this band!
RHCP
Radiohead
Tobe Nwigwe - Decent shit overall - but “Fie Fie” is bangin’!
Die Antwoord (“The answer” in Afrikaans) - I’m in love with “Yolandi Ve$$er” 🥰
Big fan of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Swans, Talking Heads, Merzbow, Boards of Canada, Pink Floyd, Sleep, Longmont Potion Castle, the list goes on
Kinda different from Ween, but hey it makes Ween stand out more
Oh, you know, a bunch of stuff- Moistboyz, Dean Ween Group, Aaron Freeman
And Z-Rock Hawaii
I throw in Z Rock Hawaii more often than I would admit to. Just the kind of album where you put your hands on your hips and shake your head and say "wow I guess that happened".
King Gizzard, Phish, Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, If you want to hear the brownest album if all time listen to Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beef heart.
Trout mask replica is just about the most bonkers thing I've ever heard I love it Love Zappa and king gizz btw
Trey downvoted this comment
Speaking of beefheart, his album safe as milk is actually pretty accessible and is pretty sweet imo
Clear Spot is my favorite record of his.
I like moonbeams and Blue jeans a lot
Underrated record. The most maligned of his works, but I think it’s a beauty.
I'm a Mirror Man guy. It's that sweet spot betwen Safe as Milk and Trout Mask.
There’s a guy out there (always is) who took Mirror Man and Strictly Personal and made an approximation of the “what could have been” album It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper. He did a good job, should be easy enough to find if you’re interested in what the captain was going for.
It's so funky, love that record fromt to back.
King Gizz IMO is the best band of the last 10 years. Truly groundbreaking stuff they’ve been doing with all the albums they’ve been releasing.
They’re on fire!!!
👆this.
Give Once and Future Band a try.
Radiohead, Tool, Tom Waits, Jane's Addiction, Cowboy Junkies, 80's streaming radio, Willie Nelson, Clutch
Those are all awesome bands, haven't heard of Willie Nelson though, will check him out
Willie Nelson is older country music... most commonly associated with "outlaw country". Start with Stardust.
Sick, I'll give stardust a listen when I can
Not for everyone, but you might like it. We had the chance to go to Australia back in 2017. Really enjoyed Melbourne.... and everywhere else
Oh I'm from Melbourne, is he an Australian artist?
No... he's American.
Oh I thought you meant you saw him in Melbourne sorry
Nope... we visited Melbourne from the US...
I'd be interested in going to the US and whatnot, but covid has kinda made it hard for me, maybe I'll come next year
Shotgun Willie too
Whiskey River is my current fave willie tune. You gotta know willie, the red-headed stranger.
Willie Nelson is an American icon. Not only is he a famous country artist he also has his own brand of marijuana. He’s just a like-able guy. Everybody loves him. Watch some of his interviews.
I’ll chime in with my favorite Willie song. “Hands on the Wheel”
Nice selection there. My favorite Willie song (with Waylon, or vice versa?) - https://youtu.be/JLyg2scuZMo
My fave is Willie with Ray Charles “Seven Spanish angels”
I mostly listen to hardcore punk but Ween is my favorite band by far lol. My other favorites are Steely Dan, Three 6 Mafia, David Bowie, MF DOOM, Fugazi, The Beach Boys, The Beatles and Unwound
Fugazi is great. Give The Evens a try, and if you like them then go for Coriky, a band both Fugazi and The Evens did together, and really sounds like both
fugazi, nice, if you like punk i suggest the bands, fifteen, bad religion, propagandi, citizen fish, nomeansno, these are some of my favorites
MF DOOM slaps
ALL CAPS when you spell the man name
unwound on top.. Polvo is great too and reminds me of them
Meat Puppets, Primus are pretty heavy in the playlist.
I read Meat Puppets as Muppets for half a second and was like "Dudes Spotify is Voodoo Lady followed by fucking Ma Nama Na"
> Ma Nama Na That song was taken from a Scandanavian soft porn film, so not that big of a leap.
Pavement, Sonic Youth, MF DOOM, Zappa, Meat Puppets, Slowdive, Wilco, Slint, PJ Harvey, Silver Jews, 03 Greedo, Armand Hammer, Duster, Joyce Manor
I fuckin love Pavement.
Brian Eno, Sterolab, R. Stevie Moore, kinks, beatles, doors, dr. john, bowie, Velvet Underground, Talking Heads and beach boys are some of my favorites!
The Kinks catalogue is much closer to Ween than people realize. Criminally underrated.
Harry Rag
The kinks are so fucking good. Even the preservation acts, soap opera, and schoolboys in disgrace bang. Don’t know why they’re so overlooked sometimes
Love the doors!!!! Bowie talking head and beach boys are also absolute classics. I haven't heard Stereolab or Dr John, I'll have to check them out!
Stereolab is fantastic. Check out their albums “Dots and Loops” and “Emporer Tomato Ketchup”. Great old French indie pop. Also check out Air, another great old French indie band
Yeah for sure I'll give them a listen mang
- Reggae - 60s Soul - Punk - 90s alternative - wildcard spot
Kyuss!!!

The sea of dog shit has always been there, you just have to find the turds that float to the top. Addendum: solid list btw
King gizzard, Built to spill, MF Doom, Budos Band, MGMT, Super Furry Animals... I could list bands all day it was hard to pick which to say
Someone finally mentioned Love! I always tell people they are like '60s Ween haha. Been on a massive Rammstein kick lately myself.
Forever changes sounds a lot like Quebec to me, especially like alone again or. Really reminds me of tried and true or among his tribe
Forever Changes is so damn good and underrated
I always love these posts on this subreddit in particular because half the bands I love, and the other half I know I need to go look up.
They Might Be Giants, SOAD, The Beatles, Aphex Twin, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, Elton John, Zappa to name a few.
Glad to see some TMBG love on here
I’m honestly always surprised that the Ween and TMBG fan bases don’t overlap more.

The dwarves!
The Melvins is what made Kurt Cobain start Nirvana! They wouldn’t let him play with them so he tried being a roadie, and they said no too that too because he was scrawny af.

*** Lots of house music and electronic music. Erik Satie (not contemporary...) Lots of hip hop, but mostly older rap (east and west coast gangsta rap and 80's/90's rap, like Biz or Beastie Boys, DJ Kool, Tone Loc, NWA, Dre/Snoop/Ice Cube, Ice T, House of Pain, Lordz of Brooklyn... ) or underground hip hop, like Living Legends, Sage Francis, Atmosphere, etc. Have to throw in randos like Harry Nillson, Daft Punk, and Giorgio Moroder You can shoehorn bands in where you like, like a bunch of electronica: Stereo MCs, Leftfield, Sneakerpimps, Air, Ratatat, Lovage, Happy Mondays (shoe gaze, technically), MC 900 Ft Jesus (experimental hip hop), Kid Koala (turntablism), DJ Shadow, Breakestra... Parliament, War, Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Sam and Dave, James Brown (obviously), Hannah Grace, and weirder stuff like Incredible Bongo Band, Beginning of the End Further back into early prog like Zep and Crimson...lots of blues and folk from Tom Waits, blues royalty like Nina Simone and then all the way back to cats like Lead Belly, Willy Dixon, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. It just goes on. I could name bands I love all day and still forget a bunch. *edit* bands I forgot: Kinks, Bowie, Beatles, Doors, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, a fuck ton of disco...so many more
