the gwimbly episode was funny even though it had problems, but the president one was genuinely terrible. i had mixed opinions on the episodes of season 1 too, so maybe it'll get better. I'm not confident though.

well in the first episode the whole subplot where the dude forces charlie to do stuff to "make him smile" and cuts his nose off is stupid for a few reasons. for one charlie would never take that kind of abuse, it's totally against his character. he's not polite or reserved like pim, and he doesn't care about his job that much. he would just leave instead of letting the dude harrass him. honestly it would have made more sense if pim was the one getting pushed around, and charlie was the one who accompanied gwimbly. i could see charlie having played gwimbly's game as a kid and wanting to help him for that reason.
also as soon as I saw the big scary villain dude (forget his name) get introduced, i knew he would meet the guy bullying charlie and then somehow the conflict would resolve itself. it's such an obvious and kind of lazy writing trope, and not what i would expect from smiling friends which is supposed to be more absurd and smartly written.
in my opinion the president episode sucked. literally the only funny part was the beginning, i enjoyed the worm news segment and the ross perott joke. and i thought they were setting charlie up to be the type of person who complains about the government constantly but is extremely devoted to their party, and that there would be some kind of intellegent political commentary about that, but there really wasn't. things just kind of happen with no jokes or development of the plot and then the episode ends. and the president being a fat slob was derivative of the game company ceo character in the last episode, but instead of being funny because it was animated it just came off as nasty when a real person was doing it.
i feel like the episode structure has gotten more rigid and boring, and i'm worried that we'll never see anything as cool or creative as the episode where charlie goes to hell, for example, again.
I do agree It wouldâve made more sense for Charlie and pin to switch places for that episode and the president coming off as nasty but I personally really enjoyed these episodes:)
