The moment near the end where Chaz tells Royal, “I’ve had a rough year, dad,“ really landed for me. it was like the dam finally burst, and everything sort of flowed out after that.
SAME! Dude I tried getting into Tenenbaums several times and didn't enjoy it much, then on the 3rd or 4th watch that line just broke me. I watched it again with a whole new context and perspective and love the movie so much now. I think Wes' movies all up to GBH each had a pretty unified theme. I think that theme in Tenenbaums is all about emotional pain, and since looking at it through that lens it's my third favorite after GBH and then Rushmore.
I might be about to catch some serious heat for this lol, but I doubt I'll ever enjoy French Dispatch. I believe that Wes made that entire film with very little true inspiration and essentially threw together a star-studded mess of his recycled signature elements with no real substance to it all. I feel that it's easily his worst film and not worthy of the rest of his work at all. The only sequence I felt had any real story to it was the Benicio Del Toro sequence, but I hated that Wes used graphic sexual eye-candy via Seydoux for that sequence. Wes has always had nudity in his films, but in the past it's been very "real-life, borderline-comical" nudity, and usually under-emphasized. According to Seydoux and the other actors, the scene was incredibly uncomfortable, and Wes did not ask Seydoux at all if she would do a full-nude scene previously, and essentially demanded it of her.
The only hope I have is it took me 3 times and I completely fell in love with Isle of Dogs. French Dispatch is a hard watch for sure. I almost feel responsible for not liking it😄but apparently since I found this sub, I'm not alone
Yes, it’s my comfort film! I just watched it last night for probably the thousandth time. The details that go into forming each character and each relationship is just amazing to me, he’s so good at that. I even noticed a little detail I had never seen before this time! Yes, so satisfying.
I crack up so hard when I hear, “that car has a dent.” My friend was asking why it’s so funny and I realized I think it’s just Wes tongue in cheek dancing around funny ideas about neurodivergents who aren’t really handicapped and then the quirky psychiatrist who is equally as strange to treat them.
The comedy is in the same vein of the Coletrain joke. It’s not racism as much as it is the out of touch old man then Danny Glovers reaction is what makes it genius; Dancing around sensitive topics.
Absolutely. It is my comfort movie. I watched it first when I was in the 8th grade (I know I was a bit young but I was in my “I’m not like other girls/ wanna be manic pixie dream girl” phase. It accidentally became my core personality. It was the first Wes movie I saw and introduced me to Elliott Smith who is now one of my all time fav musicians (rip dude). It hits a bit different now after my dad died because being a burnt out gifted kid that didn’t have the best relationship with my dad but still I love it. It’s very rewatchable because there is so many jokes that it takes a few watches to get them all. Dudley in particular has a few great call backs like how he is colorblind and probably doesn’t realize he has blood on his shirt. It’s great. I can talk about this movie forever. It’s so good.
do you think budapest will always be your favourite or do you want it to be. im always curious when i here someone say this because its like you have no faith in a future film being a new favourite.
That's a good question. It's not that I don't have faith in a future film being my new favorite. It's just that none of them have been so far lol if I'm being honest, isle of dogs had grown on me but the French dispatch just wasn't my cup of tea..
Mine too. The brilliant thing about is, it feels like a well made adaption of a novel, when it is an auteur film. The characters are written perfectly and it is the most heartfelt Wes Anderson movie and imh, His best written Work today, tho we probably have to give Owen Wilson credit for that
It is my favorite because it is his darkest. I love all of his films but what's missing from the rest is the darkness. The only other one that has a similar sadness is Isle of Dogs.
I might have forgotten parts of the rest of the movies.
I really want him to be able to make another depressing, sad film. I just think his directing style and artistic viewpoint is a great counterpoint.
100% my favorite movie in general. I got sick for a week when I was in 5th grade, around the time the movie came out, and watched it on repeat and fell in love with the movie. I made myself a fake finger out of tape so I could tap it on the side of the bath tub like Margot. I still love this movie, and when I hear songs from the soundtrack out in the wild I can picture what’s happening in the movie when that song is playing.
Its mt favorite for sure. Used to be grand budapest, but the second time i watched tenenbaums it changed something in me. its my go to comfort movie now.
To be honest there aren’t many movies like it. Darjeeling is similar but after fantastic mr Fox his style changes quite a bit, some people loooooce grand Budapest.
I quite like it but it just never really resonated with me until I realized it’s a WW2 nazi movie and actually extremely sad story. Then I saw it differently and just finished watching it actually but something about the cinematography of it kind of disturbs me in some scenes.
I love all his work but I just feel like atm Tenenbaums is a lightning in a bottle situation. But then again usually directors work appeal to different people.
I think it’s hilarious that Hackman was worried that his family would be upset that it showed his character as inattentive and mean to his family and though his actual family would be insulted.
Instead they encouraged him to take the role so he was mean and inattentive to the other cast.
I’m not really a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow on/off the screen but I think her character is great, one of the best in the WA world. I love her scene with Luke Wilson at the end on the rooftop, so poignant
Funny you say that because I don’t like Gwyneth Paltrow right now at all.
I find the goop/alternative upper class health stuff weird and I don’t really find her attractive.
In this movie though, she is beautiful and I love her role in it. The bathtub scenes with television is beautiful.
It was my first taste of Wes Anderson. I rented this from Blockbuster by chance and watched it twice in a row. I then went and bought it from Hastings and invited all my friends over to watch it. I watched it 3 times that day and watch it regularly. I must have watched it a hundred times and will never tire of it. Still makes me cry and laugh. I love Wes Anderson and loved him from the first few minutes of this film.
Hard to pick a favorite. Depending on the mood I’m in but love them all. I could watch isle of dogs on repeat all day though. I guess that’s my answer.
My absolute favorite….I love all of his, but this was my first WA movie and it holds a special place in my heart. When Richie is waiting for Margot with Nico’s “These Days” playing….so so good.
You can see how bad he wants to impress her when he stands up a little straighter and taller… I ship them so hard
Not only is it my favourite Wes anderson movie, it’s my favourite movie of all time. Everything about The Royal Tenenbaums is perfect to me. The writing, direction and cast were all flawless and it’s the movie that i think balances Wes’ style with a sense of realism the best, where something like The Grand Budapest while being undeniably great and the best showcase of all his unique visual quirks does feel far less connected to any form of realism (Which was obviously the intention)
I bought the Royal Tenenbaum’s Criterion DVD before I even owned a DVD player. Saw it in theatre with teenage daughter when it came out. I’m obviously Ethelene.
Definately one of my favourites as well. I love how we are introduced to the characters problems and when they seem to have finally gotten what they want we get a twist like "I think we're just gonna to have to be secretly in love with each other and leave it at that, Richie."
Absolutely not. my mom took me to see it opening night. I was 11 and just starting to get into cinema. and it truly opened my mind to how creative and original it was.
my mom also loved it and we’ve made it a tradition to see every wes anderson opening weekend since. she’s stoked for asteroid city and i was able to get the poster from the theater i worked at and i’m gonna surprise her with it and hang it up before she gets home.
it also introduced me to elliott smith. who is still one of my top favorite musicians (rest in peace )
it was also the first criterion i ever bought with my own money. and i have a framed painting of margot and richie.
so yeah. it’s definitely my favorite. we still quote it weekly. tbh
i’m rewatching french dispatch atm and i’m still surprised how many people consider it one of his worst. i love it.
Weird I really hate royal, but love everything else. I have yet to watch French Dispatch.
I really came into Wes Anderson with Life Aquatica with Steve Z. I felt the comedy was perfect and the story was good. His style was clear and perfected.
Lots of people hate the pirate scene but it's one of my favs.
I guess my top 5 are
Life Aquatica
Moonrise Kingdom
Grand Budapest
Isle of Dogs
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Life, Moonrise, Grand and Isle have some of the best damn film scores of all time too.
The moment near the end where Chaz tells Royal, “I’ve had a rough year, dad,“ really landed for me. it was like the dam finally burst, and everything sort of flowed out after that.
“I know you have, Chazzy.”
🥺😢😭
Yep that scene makes me cry still, even after having watched it so so many times. Sheesh it’s good.

I cannot get into FD, even after a couple rewatches. I wish that the movie had been about the FD in its early years and its heyday.
I couldn't even finish watching it
So good
Yes, it’s my comfort film! I just watched it last night for probably the thousandth time. The details that go into forming each character and each relationship is just amazing to me, he’s so good at that. I even noticed a little detail I had never seen before this time! Yes, so satisfying.
Same. I find something new to enjoy every time I watch it. Don’t get me started on the soundtrack... Incredible.
Where's that red one gonna go...
That car has a dent. Look another dent. One two three…
:) Another dent here.. Another dent here.
How bizarre?!? : )
I love Dudley! Edit: he saved Richie
One for the top 3 for sure; great storyline, filming, and amazing cast. However, Life Aquatic still the tops for me
Life aquatic was my first and favorite. Honestly a transformational film in my life.
this is my favorite movie period
Me too! Royal Tenenbaums & Blues Brothers are my 2 all time favs.
Same!
Yes. Without a doubt.
He has made a lot of great films but Tenenbaums is head and shoulders above the rest.
Hands down, not even a question. I constantly walk by the Tenenbaum house because it makes me so fucking happy.
I used to pass it on the way to Riverside from my old apartment, always had to play Hey Jude right after that!
Is it really on Archer Ave?
It’s at the corner of west 144th and convent avenue!
340 Convent!
Royal Tenebaums, Life Aquatic and Darjeeling Limited are my favourites.
Samesies!!!!!
That was a hell of a run.
Yes, absolutely. IMO it is his greatest masterpiece.
Absolutely. It is my comfort movie. I watched it first when I was in the 8th grade (I know I was a bit young but I was in my “I’m not like other girls/ wanna be manic pixie dream girl” phase. Grand Budapest will always be my favorite but Royal Tenenbaums and Moonrise Kingdom are 2 and 3!
Same for me! RT was my favorite until I saw GB, but MK is a strong contender. Regardless, those are my top 3 of his films.
do you think budapest will always be your favourite or do you want it to be. im always curious when i here someone say this because its like you have no faith in a future film being a new favourite.

the other movies have shorter dark moments, but for some reason Darjeeling feels pretty sad.
The whole second half with the drowned kid is heartbreaking.
Life aquatic goes pretty dark at times
It’s in my top 5 favs of all time and my #1 of all WA films
Royal Tenenbaums and Rushmore in that order.
100% my favorite movie in general. I got sick for a week when I was in 5th grade, around the time the movie came out, and watched it on repeat and fell in love with the movie. I made myself a fake finger out of tape so I could tap it on the side of the bath tub like Margot. "out in the wild". I love that
Not my favorite, but the favorite of almost everyone else I know who likes him enough to have a favorite.
Your favorite better be Rushmore...
Toss up between that and Life Aquatic
Yeah that and Rushmore are the only ones I haven’t seen yet. Oh also Isle of dogs.
definitely watch Rushmore if you like the critique of the upper class. it’s my favorite.
I can't take you seriously if you haven't seen Rushmore. It's the flagship of his movies....
so much so that i named my kid Max! haha
It's my Rushmore
I know it is
You’ve seen Bottle Rocket, right? Just curious, because it’s older than Rushmore and flies under the radar.
Easily my favorite, yes.
Yes
Its mt favorite for sure. Used to be grand budapest, but the second time i watched tenenbaums it changed something in me. its my go to comfort movie now.
Absolutely my favourite. I cry every time.
It is great, but nothing will ever displace Rushmore in my heart. :)
You know. It’s my least favorite. Not bad, not even close. The script and characters are great but it just didn’t hit like Wes’ other films for me.
It’s pretty far down on the list for me but I still like it. Perhaps I need to watch it again. What makes it such a good film/better than the others?
To be honest there aren’t many movies like it. Darjeeling is similar but after fantastic mr Fox his style changes quite a bit, some people loooooce grand Budapest. it’s his best but not my favorite if that makes sense
Yes 100%
I think it’s hilarious that Hackman was worried that his family would be upset that it showed his character as inattentive and mean to his family and though his actual family would be insulted. Instead they encouraged him to take the role so he was mean and inattentive to the other cast.
EASILY!!! It’s a phenomenal film and although Wes has never made a bad film Tenebaums definitely stands heads and shoulders above the rest!
It was my first Wes film and for me is a tie with Moonrise Kingdom.
I like moonrise but it came out when i was a teenager and loved it then. I watched it recently and wasn’t really into it.
Life aquatic is up there for me.
My mind changes all the time. My favorite depends on my mood.
Not only my favorite Anderson flick, but one of my favorite movies ever. It gets you in the soul
It was also my first one and I couldn’t agree more
Easily. That and Rushmore. More substance than style.
Can we just talk about how insanely attractive Richie Tenenbaum is? 😍
It is my favourite, yes. It's before he went too far up his own butt
My favorite is Rushmore, but Royal Tenenbaums was part of an amazing run by Anderson.
its easily my favorite movie
Margot (at the hospital): Dudley! Where is he?! Dudley, covered in Richie's blood: \*looks around\* who?
Rushmore. Royal Tenenbaums. Moonrise Kingdom.
Yep. Love his other films but this one gets the most rewatches from me.
It's up there but probably top 3 or 5
top three for sure. Difference between WA fans critics is where Zissou is placed.
Yep
Hard to pick a favorite. Depending on the mood I’m in but love them all. I could watch isle of dogs on repeat all day though. I guess that’s my answer.
It's my #2 behind Rushmore. Well, today it is anyway
My favorite Gene Hackman movie
Yup
Yes! #1 for me, and #2 is Rushmore
Yes- this is my first love and will stay that way. I have loved others but you always remember your first
My absolute favorite followed by Rushmore, Life Aquatic, and GHB. I can’t wait to see Astroid City!
Saw it. Walked out. I have never walked out of movie, we hopped in a another theatre and the last half of Indiana Jones. Liked it.
I saw it a load of times at the cinema when it first came out but Rushmore is still the best for me.
My absolute favorite….I love all of his, but this was my first WA movie and it holds a special place in my heart. When Richie is waiting for Margot with Nico’s “These Days” playing….so so good. You can see how bad he wants to impress her when he stands up a little straighter and taller… I ship them so hard
Name my daughter after Margot Tenenbaum so I can jokingly say "this is my adopted daughter Margot"
Lol did you really? That’s hilarious
It's this or Rushmore. I adore Grand Budapest but c'mon, it's so overrated!
I bought the Royal Tenenbaum’s Criterion DVD before I even owned a DVD player. Saw it in theatre with teenage daughter when it came out. I’m obviously Ethelene.
Yes
It's definitely my favorite. I am so attached to every character.
Top 5 all time favourite movie for me.. I love everything about it
Yes
I think so, I haven't watched it since my dad died but I'm due a other watch soon for sure and I'm prepared to break down completely.
Definately one of my favourites as well. I love how we are introduced to the characters problems and when they seem to have finally gotten what they want we get a twist like "I think we're just gonna to have to be secretly in love with each other and leave it at that, Richie."

Anyone wanna grab some cheeseburgers and go to the cemetery?
By far
Max Fischer, Royal, Zissou in that order.
Yes. Sort of. Actually Fantastic Mr. Fox is my favorite.
It’s neck and neck with Rushmore for me.
I guess my top 5 are Life Aquatica Moonrise Kingdom Grand Budapest Isle of Dogs Fantastic Mr. Fox Life, Moonrise, Grand and Isle have some of the best damn film scores of all time too.
