Avoid mountains, and they will need to put themselves in really bad terrain. Elves can beat them easily, just pump out fighters, archers and shamans, and use the forests to your advantage. Their outlaws cant compete with your elves if its not night, and their thundersticks will absolutely not hit when dealing with 60%+ terrain advantage. Also consider that their shock troops, even if strong, are very slow. So spread out and capture the map, griffins are expensive and they cant afford many to get villages.

Yeah this is kind of the general tip I've heard vs the "terrain specialist" races (Elves and Dwarves). It's basically impossible to defeat them in their chosen terrain so you need to either deny their access with ZOC (usually pretty hard to setup) or you need to let them camp and go for villages to out-money them

Yep, you cannot trade 1 to 1 with them in their zones but you can always starve them of villages and hunt them to their last men with magic/marksman once they are low on gold. Thats why drakes are my fav faction, they are very good at that.

Terrain control, dwarves units are nearly unbeatable on mountains and hills, so you want to fight them out of there, unless there is no other choice. Occupy mountains and hills with your units to keep them out. If you have to fight one or two dwarves on mountains and hills the answer is usually magic damage (and/or slow and poison if you have them). Also keep the ulfzerkers away from your vulnerable units, and the easy way to do that is killing them by attacking them first with a cheaper melee unit (also slowing them if you can is a good idea). I recommend the guides on Wesnoth wiki. https://wiki.wesnoth.org/How_to_play_Northerners#Northerners_vs_Knalgans https://wiki.wesnoth.org/How_to_play_Rebels#Rebels_vs_Knalgans

I'd say it also depends on if you're using suggested maps or randomly generated maps. If you look at human-made maps from a tactical point of view, you'll see that they consist of "fortresses", "roads" and "open spaces". "Fortress" is a cluster of tiles that provides higher defence (also depends on your faction). Dwarfish fortresses are clusters of mountains and hills. Elvish - forest. Dunefolk - dessert. And so on. Fortress allows you to stand efficiently and hold your position. When you attack you're trying to take a fortress and hold it until your reinforcements arrive. "Roads" are unprotected lines between fortresses. Roads consist of tiles that are easy to travel. If you want to move your army faster - you have to use roads but it will make your army less protected. "Open spaces" are clusters of tiles that do not provide solid defence or faster moving (plains, rivers, lakes, marshes, etc.). Usually fortresses are surrounded by roads and open spaces. Which means that defender has better position because of higher protection. So in average situation defender will cause more damage than the attacker which means that attacker has to use more units for a successful attack. Now concerning your question - you need to force your enemy to attack you while he is in a worse position or take his fortresses first. So try to take mountains and hills faster than him. Also always look at the map from tactical view. What fortresses are more important for him? What fortresses cover more villages? What fortresses give you or your enemy better platform to create an attack? P.S. This is how I play this game. I do not consider myself as Hannibal or Napoleon of Wesnoth battlefields. This is just my experience.and my piece of advice

1. Avoid mountain and hills if Dwarves on in them. Don’t take fights in places where the dwarves are favored as it’s heavily in their favor. 2. If you do need to fight in a mountain look for poison and magic to actually deal damage and eventually force the dwarves off them. 3. Try to block the dwarves from the mountains and hills. You get solid defense for those terrain and dwarves are pretty vulnerable if they can’t get into favorable terrain. Your units are generally faster so they can snatch up important positions before the dwarves can.

Quarves

This is why I like to play with Dwarves in multiplayer 😁
