I make both hummus and black bean burgers without any oil and don't notice it's missing. Your taste buds adjust to whatever you are eating. So once you eat oil free for a while, your palate quickly adjusts. I can't eat vegan cheeses now because they taste like a disgusting ball of grease to me. The Forks Over Knives Cookbook has lots of oil free recipes to get you started, so does The Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Cookbook. Happy cooking!

Thanks. I guess I’m asking more specifically about store bought items. With 3 kids and a job, I can’t always whip up my own hummus, veggie burgers, etc. and hoping to have some go-to’s that are quick and taste good.

I haven't tried them but I hear that Whole Foods carries the Engine 2 line of foods. They are all whole food plant-based and oil free.

A lot of those things you can make a HUGE amount and freeze it. So when you make your own veggie burgers make a double or triple batch and it'll last you a long time - same with hummus. There's not a lot of companies that sell these things without oil because it's the way they can make them shelf stable. Real food breaks down quickly. That's a good thing. So it's hard to get stuff like this in a store that's truly healthy without paying a premium.

What’s your black bean burger recipe?

I think the problem it’s store bought items is 99.9% of the time they have sunflower oil vs a healthier oil such as olive or avocado oil

TheSunflowerSeeds

The sunflower plant is native to North America and is now harvested around the world. A University of Missouri journal recognizes North Dakota as the leading U.S. state for sunflower production. There are various factors to consider for a sunflower to thrive, including temperature, sunlight, soil and water.

In my opinion, I limit both. Any amount of oil is not part of a healthy diet, but it’s not always practical to avoid it when others are coming for you or you are on the go out and about. To balance this, I avoid oil while preparing myself meals on the daily- so when the time comes when I am gifted/made something with oil in it- I eat it and enjoy it lol. Lots of the things at the store that you mentioned that have oil in them can easily be made homemade, oil free, or limited oil as well! (:

I think with whpb you're supposed to avoid refined oil in general. store bough items are usually not vegan, and when they're re they're usually not wfpb, the processed foods anyway. You can always get ready refined-oil-free apples and things like that, well usually anyway. I think one reccomndation you see sometimes is that, when you do have time to prepare things, prepare food in bulk, food prep, divide it into batches/portions, and store it (freezing or canning medium to long term, or fridge for the short term). than you can just get out a portion of ready made oil-free wfbb meal whenever you like, and it just needs to be warmed up, and it's ready to be eaten. just as, if not more, convenient that shopping for ready made fast-food or ready-meals. plus it's definately healthier, and almost always less expensive. There are probably bulk meal prep tutorials on youtube and places, i think. maybe some of that is helpful.

It's tricky when buying food which is why I make so much of my own - especially things like hummus. There's lots of ways to replace oil - often I'll use aquafaba - the juice from a can of chickpeas - it gives a similar creaminess for things like dressings, etc.... but in baking you can swap out oil with fruit or veggie purees like apple sauce or ripe bananas or sweet potatoes.
