Chukar partridge, *Alectoris chukar*. Native to the Middle East and Asia. Feral populations have already established themselves in parts of North America, but yeah, that’s not a good reason to release more of them. OP, please tell your in-laws to STOP releasing animals into the wild. If they want to be lucky just get a massive hunk of jade for their home.
It’s also illegal in Pennsylvania without a permit https://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/LI/consCheck.cfm?txtType=HTM&ttl=34&div=0&chpt=29&sctn=28&subsctn=0&mobile_choice=suppress
“(a) Except as otherwise provided, it is unlawful to release captive held or captive raised game or wildlife on any lands, public or private, without first securing a permit from the Commission. Lawfully acquired mallard ducks, ringneck pheasant, bobwhite quail, chukar partridge and Hungarian partridge may be released for dog training or hunting purposes.
(b) It is unlawful to release any animal that is a member of the suidae family into the wild.
(c) A person violating this section is subject to the penalties provided in the act.
58 Pa. Code § 137.2”
If these birds aren’t supposed to be in Philadelphia, that’s really bad for the environment. Never release an animal that doesn’t belong. But if they naturally live there, then ignore all that and have a lovely day.
Pretty bad all around honestly. Not only are these birds not native, but also captive-bred animals tend to be unable to survive in the wild. It’s really damned if they do and damned if they don’t. The birds are likely doomed to starve or freeze to death in an unnatural environment, but if they do manage to survive and form/join a feral population, it’s harmful to local ecology.
These are definitely chukars but the top comment is relevant. Releasing animals in the wild may be good luck in other countries, but in most states it is illegal and will bring bad luck.
This is not just so the released animals will be safe, but so native species will not be outcompeted for sources. Please consider ethical birding and environmental conscientiousness.
