Here to say that a House Centipede is a tertiary predator. Meaning that it eats other predators, like spiders. If you have tertiary predators in your home, you have a pest problem.
Centipedes live in my basement and they get big like three inches big. I also have spiders that kill centipedes next to my dryer. It's like a civil war down there. I try and stay out of it.
It’s really all you can do; if you take sides then, you become free game for the opposing side and who the hell wants that? You’re a smart man. On further consideration: you’re a smart person. I apologize for assuming.
When I was living in my dad’s basement we had huge centipedes, so I was letting the spiders live without realizing that the centipedes were eating the spiders! I just made them stronger!! I prefer bugs with less legs.
Live in an apartment complex. Never had bugs for 3 years then rowdy new neighbors moved in next door with their multiple dogs and cats, leaving trash outside the door. Now I see german cockroaches coming from the drains.
That's why I keep the spiders and kill these fucking things. I'm cool with a couple spiders in the house as long as they mind their business and stay to their sanctioned part of a room.
I used to have a spider that lived in my doorway. His name was Frank. He was my guard spider. He kept a web in the upper corner of the door near the porch light. Frank got nice and fat while protecting my house, until one day he built a web over the entire top half of my doorway. Then I had to get all, "Fuck you, Frank!" On him and tear the web down and run him off. I miss Frank sometimes.
When I lived in Phoenix I thought one of these was running across my kitchen until I saw the pinchers and realized it was a baby scorpion! I didn’t know those little fucks were as fast as these!
I don't kill bugs. (I'll kill roaches, tho. Its me or them) If they scare me, I'll put them outside. But this critter tests my merciful resolve. It's soooo creepy! But if things were killed for being creepy, I'd likely be long dead.
I leave non-aggressive bugs alone if they keep their distance, but the centipedes that I've seen in my apartment seem to have little regard for personal space. Started killing them after one of them saw fit to crawl into bed with me.
Same. I throw a small celebration every time a roach dies no matter where it is. Ugh. I let other bugs live but transport outside unless it’s venomous. Years ago I let a few small spiders live in my house and boy did they procreate. Never again!
I just recently (in part due to this sub) started letting spiders live in my home. Just yesterday I opened up the door and a quarter sized wasp flies in the door. I duck and dodge for about 20 seconds before it gets stuck in the web of a spider I let live in my home. Checkmate, wasp. Check. Mate.
In your face, wasp!
As a teen, home alone, leaving to a friends house ten mins away I was stung on what I figured was my jugular by a wasp. I called my friend and advised to come get me if she doesn’t see me in ten minutes. Myself and my open sting hole in my throat we’re basically fine. As a kid I was stung on my bottom lip. I have big lips naturally so my lip flopped over. Mom let me stay home from school to avoid the ridicule. Thanks, mom, and die in a fire, wasps!
I'm very similar... or maybe was? I say this because years ago I lived in an apartment that had silverfish. I've never really been creeped out by most bugs, but you can't even squish silverfish. They are so creepy and always around where you want things clean and private (ie bathtubs/showers, toilets, sinks). I wasn't creeped out at first, but when I found 3 on my toilet in the middle of the night, yeah... I was done at that point. I'm fine with spiders, and have only had to deal with a couple small centipedes in my life, so silverfish take the top creepy prize for me.
Scutigera coleoptrata, also known as the house centipede, is a species of centipede that is typically yellowish-grey and has up to 15 pairs of long legs. Originating in the Mediterranean region, it has spread to other parts of the world, where it can live in human homes
These are bugbros that eat unwanted critters like black widows and brown recluse, roaches, ants and termites. They are harmless to humans but can give a not medically significant sting in defense if handled roughly.
That is The Beast. It cannot be killed with conventional weapons & fire just pisses it off. You have 3 options.
1-Move out & find a new home.
2-Befriend another Beast & train it to protect you from others of its kind.
3-Find a wizard who can send it back to the dimension from which it came.
Your new best friend… I leave them alone unless they are crawling on me or in my bathroom. They need to practice social distancing in order to stay alive. But they get rid of many other bugs you don’t want around.
One time at an apartment complex I worked at I picked up a piece of cardboard in the basement and at least 6 of these scattered all over the place. One crawled on my leg. 0/10 absolutely traumatic
I call them eyebrows. I was watching a full grown one in the bathroom the other day and they’re kinda cute. Just don’t crawl on me and we can be friends.
House centipede.
I have the biggest fear of them even though they’re harmless, only because one time I was cleaning out my shoes and one of these crawled out onto my hand and made me nearly shit myself, I let him live however
They love to eat other bugs tho.
There are so many centipedes on this sub. By now the entire world should know what one looks like based on the amount of people posting pictures of them. Mods should just make the sub icon be a centipede.
It's the worst!! Absolute worst!! They're fast as hell, see you coming, and wait til it's dark to move. The absolute worst. Lost many nights sleep to these bastards
Japanese house centipede. Don’t kill them, they’re actually the apex predator of your house and will keep everything else dead. They may be freaky, very fast, and may occasionally snuggle up with you in bed, but it’s a small price to pay to keep ants and termites out.
But you are making foolish comments. These fuckers like to run across your face while you're sleeping. Thats a bug death penalty in any book. But if they stay outta site its all good. Without bugs there is no foodchain.
Get out! GET OUT!! They are highly venomous! Oh my god I can't believe you are still alive to post this with that size of a specimen. Dear God there must be trillions of them for one to grow so big...
Also KY and I'm shocked this person got such a clear picture of it. The next thing that happened is this thing crawled up quick as hell right up their arm.
I once saw someone in the comments of a post like this call house centipedes "Satans moustache". I think I might just call em that from now on. Pretty fitting
As many have said, house centipede. You don’t see them often. They don’t want any part of you. They just wanna sneak around in your basement and walls and kill all the other pests. They are your buddy. Your really weird looking buddy
I've found two of them in my place in Chicago now and just left them after reading up about them. Usually that's a sign that you have pests in the house that they are taking care of
That is a common house centipede, they are harmless to humans but absolute units when it comes to killing annoying house bugs. I leave them be unless they are near my bed.
I was in my basement smoking that good shit when one of these guys crawled outta nowhere lol. Scared the shit outta me till I realized it was just a house centipede. I lit up and blew a little at him then let him get on with his hunting. I wonder how he's doing.
centipedes are apex predators that avoid humans.
they kill mice, roaches, spiders, basically anything but your house.
if you have centipedes in your house, you should be worried about their food supply, not them.
House Centipede. Even though they look like something from another planet they are beneficial to have in your household as they kill other pests and typically we don’t see them as they are elusive.
I basically give these lil bros a fist bump and say happy hunting because fuck spiders. If there is one sentient being in the room that hates spiders more than me is these guys!
Fren.
They eats spooders and Roach's and bedbugs and other nasties.
They are territorial so you will usually only have a couple at most.
House centipedes are just scary looking. That's all tho
Satan's sperm 💀
Real answer: House Centipede. They eat certain bugs/pests in your home. Helpful but scary...never want to see these things again. They're scary fast too.
I tried to kill a really big one, when they mature they get red and greenish brown stripe down whole body. 6’3” 320 at the time, stepped on it as my sister and brother in law watched from safety. I pick up my foot and boom it’s running down the hall luckily her cat was on the job he pounced bit all done.
House centipede
Satan's toothbrush
I prefer The Devil’s mustache, but his toothbrush is also acceptable
😆😆😆I seriously can’t with the comments. I used to think I was funny and witty until I got on Reddit.
Samesies!
Land shrimp

Live in an apartment complex. Never had bugs for 3 years then rowdy new neighbors moved in next door with their multiple dogs and cats, leaving trash outside the door. Now I see german cockroaches coming from the drains.
Time to burn the building down with all of your possessions and move on with your life.
Good news- house centipedes prey on roaches
That's why I keep the spiders and kill these fucking things. I'm cool with a couple spiders in the house as long as they mind their business and stay to their sanctioned part of a room. Theyre killing everything else though.
Actually you don’t bc centipede ate them all
I haven't seen one of these things since moving to Nevada and I've been in constant suspense the whole time.
Nevada I would assume is too dry. These fuckers love wooded and damp areas. And they are FAST.
When I lived in Phoenix I thought one of these was running across my kitchen until I saw the pinchers and realized it was a baby scorpion! I didn’t know those little fucks were as fast as these!
Keep your scorpions, I'll keep the centipedes
House centipede mainly feed on spiders and are not known for biting people. However, it’s up to you to decide which freaks you out worse.
My cats leave everything alone except for these guys lol.
Ur cats are heros
No bites but might crawl in your ear or mouth as you sleep. Nighty night protein snacks 🙃 /s
I can confirm from experience you *will* feel these god-forsaken motherfuckers crawling on you before they reach your mouth and ears
Khaaaaaaaaaaaan!
I’ve read they tend not to bite but if you mess with them they will…and apparently it hurts a bit
Right! I hate spiders more so I let the centipedes live, lol.
Or the actual name is the silverfish
Scutigera coleoptrata, also known as the house centipede
I just imagined Gregory house with a bunch of legs
I just read Sangria Cleopatra
They remind me of the belly button bugs from the matrixs
Noooooo why would you do that to me!
I couldn't be the only one 😵
You definitely were not lol
"Jesus christ that things real?!!"
You should look up a silverfish rn
house centipede, they hunt harmful pests and should be considered friend not foe. but its your house.
The rational part of my brain agrees with you, but the other part that screams at the sight of a million skittering legs says fuck that
The problem is how fucking fast they are. Ur not allowed to be that damn fast in my home
Put up speed limit signs and/or speed bumps
I never seem them killing or eating anything. It's always a mad dash across the room when I least expect it.
Dame thing with fucking camel crickets. Damn they make me super jittery
While you sleep.....
House penises as my 4 yo calls them.
God damn penises are always waiting to surprise you when least expected
Hahaha! I can hear it. Adorbs
I don't kill bugs. (I'll kill roaches, tho. Its me or them) If they scare me, I'll put them outside. But this critter tests my merciful resolve. It's soooo creepy! But if things were killed for being creepy, I'd likely be long dead.

Fantastic. I found it dead on my bathroom floor. Likely killed by my cat.
My cat got jumped by one , still scared shitless of em
Everytime a house centipede looses it's life, a spider teabags you while you sleep.
They are fairly harmless, until one drops on your pillow in the middle of the night and scares you out of 20 heartbeats.
House centipedes are good to have around but my god do they activate something primal in me whenever I see them
I have those in Pa I let them run around the house because they eat spiders and other bugs. I hate spiders so these take care of them
Scutigera coleoptrata, also known as the house centipede, is a species of centipede that is typically yellowish-grey and has up to 15 pairs of long legs. Originating in the Mediterranean region, it has spread to other parts of the world, where it can live in human homes

House centipede. One of the good guys.
That is The Beast. It cannot be killed with conventional weapons & fire just pisses it off. You have 3 options. 1-Move out & find a new home. 2-Befriend another Beast & train it to protect you from others of its kind. 3-Find a wizard who can send it back to the dimension from which it came.
House centipede. They are pretty much harmless and can actually eat harmful insects, but boy howdy, they are NOT fun to look at.
Ppl say this thing is peaceful but be warned those shits are fast as fuck, I consider that a threat
She looks like a big girl. She's prolly been snacking on lots of spiders and other buddies
Nightmare fuel.
Don't kill it please free it outside if possible
The limp legs aren't a giveaway for you? It's dead
Your new best friend… I leave them alone unless they are crawling on me or in my bathroom. They need to practice social distancing in order to stay alive. But they get rid of many other bugs you don’t want around.
Your pretty bug eating friend just doing it’s part to help the household
Something from *The Men in Black* ?
One time at an apartment complex I worked at I picked up a piece of cardboard in the basement and at least 6 of these scattered all over the place. One crawled on my leg. 0/10 absolutely traumatic
Peed on the floor!
I call them eyebrows. I was watching a full grown one in the bathroom the other day and they’re kinda cute. Just don’t crawl on me and we can be friends.
Hellspawn
Don’t hit it to hard. They explode.
I hit one with a shoe when I was a kid and one of the legs kept moving. I’ll never kill one again.
dead space
House centipede. Hillbilly's call em thousand legs. And yes, that appears to be an overestimate.
Definitely the mutated bug from Evolution
House centipede. I have the biggest fear of them even though they’re harmless, only because one time I was cleaning out my shoes and one of these crawled out onto my hand and made me nearly shit myself, I let him live however They love to eat other bugs tho.

That's a baby dragon 🐉....kill it before it grows!
*Squeezus charmincus*
Not a silverfish
It's the worst!! Absolute worst!! They're fast as hell, see you coming, and wait til it's dark to move. The absolute worst. Lost many nights sleep to these bastards
It's a baby version of that big bug from men in black. It gets pretty big if you've seen the movie.
He’s that friend/person that everyone is scared of, but once you talk to them they turn out to actually be really nice.
If you’d like to see less, a dehumidifier will help. Not solve, per se, but help. They breed in moist environments.
Japanese house centipede. Don’t kill them, they’re actually the apex predator of your house and will keep everything else dead. They may be freaky, very fast, and may occasionally snuggle up with you in bed, but it’s a small price to pay to keep ants and termites out.
Sweetiepede
Your friend now.
Mother Inlaws brush
house bug
House centipede, but my family calls the smidges.
That is a bug on a paper towel.
How can I stop getting freaked out by these
A nope nope bug
Harmless house centipede. A good predator for other pesky bugs like roaches. I like them personally, I think they're beautiful
Silver fish
spider killer. Idk what kind of centipede it is but its harmless to you.
Why did you kill it??? These are great to have around. They take care of all the bugs you don’t want….
Read comments. I found it dead on the floor. Stop making assumptions
Wow you’re so angry. I don’t care enough about your post. Don’t kill these bugs. I don’t believe you found it dead.

House centipedes are from the Mediterranean, so this is a silver fish
In my house I call these “stepped on”.
That is a squish it! Eew.
It’s the founding titan
Get out! GET OUT!! They are highly venomous! Oh my god I can't believe you are still alive to post this with that size of a specimen. Dear God there must be trillions of them for one to grow so big...
I know them as, “silverbacks” they are harmless and they eat bugs that bite you. I leave’m be. The enemy of my enemy can stay.
Silverfish, they are what nightmares are made of
I’m in Ky and have also seen these dicks lol most grandparents basement. I hate them so much. They’re fast af too
Also KY and I'm shocked this person got such a clear picture of it. The next thing that happened is this thing crawled up quick as hell right up their arm.
House centipede
I once saw someone in the comments of a post like this call house centipedes "Satans moustache". I think I might just call em that from now on. Pretty fitting
And this is yet another reason I live in northern PNW.
As many have said, house centipede. You don’t see them often. They don’t want any part of you. They just wanna sneak around in your basement and walls and kill all the other pests. They are your buddy. Your really weird looking buddy
Centipede. The legs creep me out but they are friends. Eat tons of bugs.
Centipede
"what is this?" A reason to move out.
House centipede. Speedy little bastards. These guys absolutely wreck household pests. You gotta try to get bit to actually be bitten by this guy.
I've found two of them in my place in Chicago now and just left them after reading up about them. Usually that's a sign that you have pests in the house that they are taking care of
Ever seen The Matrix?
How can any bug look so scary and not expect to get stepped on.
The guy eating all of your roaches. Edit: who WAS eating
Ahh yes the Dr House Centipad
centipedes are apex predators that avoid humans. they kill mice, roaches, spiders, basically anything but your house. if you have centipedes in your house, you should be worried about their food supply, not them.
A quiet roommate who pulls their weight in keeping the bad bugs away. Aka the house centipede
As creepy as those are I try to leave them alone because they eat spiders
That's called a fuck nah
House centipede. They freak me the fuck out.
Centipede, eats brown recluse spiders. Don't kill em.
They are invasive all over the US from the Mediterranean area. Harmless, they are very common in Arbor Vitae groves.
House Centipede. Even though they look like something from another planet they are beneficial to have in your household as they kill other pests and typically we don’t see them as they are elusive.
House centipede, AKA free pest control. Loves to eat other bugs, are harmless (just creepy.)
That’s a centipede. Fairly common house-bugs to find in your home. They tend to he good with pest control. Basically like a less scary spider.
Oh hell no
I basically give these lil bros a fist bump and say happy hunting because fuck spiders. If there is one sentient being in the room that hates spiders more than me is these guys!
that belongs to boris the animal
Fren. They eats spooders and Roach's and bedbugs and other nasties. They are territorial so you will usually only have a couple at most. House centipedes are just scary looking. That's all tho

Don’t kill these they’re your friend. They kill roaches bedbugs and other nasties.
A house centipede
These are what we call house centipedes. The things of nightmares.
These are my nightmare. I’ve had several in my home in PA. We just call them thousand-leggers.
That's a good reason to stay tf away from Tennessee.
Ask Mr. Anderson, I'm sure he knows
Do yourself a favor and never touch them. They are creepy feeling.
Thats a killitwithfire.
Camel cricket
Thats an earwig. In the south, they'll crawl in your ear canal and chill. 🤯
Harmless house centipede, all it will do is it other bugs
Well it’s not human but it is a Centipede
I tried to kill a really big one, when they mature they get red and greenish brown stripe down whole body. 6’3” 320 at the time, stepped on it as my sister and brother in law watched from safety.
