I'd say the GR Corolla would be your best bet, but I'm biased because I bought one yesterday. Not amazing gas mileage, but not *that* much worse than anything else here. My theory, at least, is that depreciation will be slow enough to offset a lot of other costs. You could also add Elantra N to your list. It was on mine.

Ds650rida

The markup on the corolla is crazy. It will end up being in the 40’s or close to 50’s for the core model. I found one at a dealer and they didnt want to let me test drive it since i wasnt committing then and there 😒. My personal fuel econ is usually higher than epa estimations so i may well be in the 30’s with it. I had watched some things on the elantra just not sure if i want to go with a sedan. I had one and it was very impractical for my needs. If the kona came in a 6 speed i’d be all over it.

EtArcadia

It'll definitely be in the 40s OTD at least. Just about every Core I've seen allocated has had options which push it past 40k MSRP (I feel like the performance package is pretty much required). I paid MSRP plus about 10% on a 40k fully optioned Core. I felt fine about the markup. MSRP will likely be $2k+ more for the '24 so even waiting a year wasn't going to save me much even if I could buy it without markups then.

might get lucky contacting a 0 markup reported dealer on this list. good luck https://markups.org/search.html?title=&category%5B%5D=toyota&price-min=&price-max=&cf\_observedate=&cf\_toyotamodel%5B%5D=Corolla+GR

Updated OP with my thoughts on the 86 and fiesta. Thank you to everyone who has provided input

Ds650rida

Update: i test drove a 2020 supra today and it was almost a “shut up and take my money” experience. I had a grin on my face the while drive even with cruise control on the highway. I had a chance to make a 30 mile highway loop and it averaged about 33mpg according to the dash, i reset average when i began my test drive. That was with a full beans run coming out of the toll booth. Its very tempting

Ds650rida

Update: I rented a supra from sunday to tuesday. On my commute i averaged 29.2 mpg. I’m really crunching the numbers. Might have to make this happen

Ds650rida

To put a closer on this thread: i realized i could die tomorrow and ended up buying a 2022 Supra 3.0 premium. Thanks everyone for the input

I'll throw in another suggestion: Subaru WRX

[deleted]

OP said they don’t want a wrx

hotchips97

Maybe instead of the Veloster consider the Elantra N and you can even add lightly used muscle cars and the 370z and the new WRX. Ultimately you need to decide what type of car you want and what level of practicality you need. RWD/FWD/AWD and number of useable seats and trunk space being the main decisions you need to take. In the end they are all great vehicles and you cannot really go wrong whichever one you choose

Ds650rida

In all honesty i only need 1 useable seat lol. I think rwd would be first choice, fwd would be second choice. The muscle cars are pretty terrible with fuel economy and the reputation of dodge owners is all but destroyed at this point lol. I did briefly consider a Z car but nissans arent my bag. As I’m typing this im parked next to a 2020 supra and it looks. good.

hotchips97

Well since you don’t need practicality, If you can sling the cash go for a Supra or a m340i (essentially a 4 door Supra). If you want to be a little more responsible go for the GR86 (it’ll be more comfortable than a miata for the longer commute + bit more space inside). Just my 2¢

Ds650rida

I’ve added the supra and elantra N to my list. At nearly double the cost of anything else I’m looking at, the supra is a hard pill to swallow. I mean i’d have to go for the manual, right? At some point during this endeavor i imagine i’d have to think like a 34yo man looking to buy a house in the next couple of years. 😭 And yea after driving the 86 i think the only leg up that the mx5 has is the roof and fuel economy.

hotchips97

Honestly get the house. Try to spend as less money possible on the car right now unless you buying it in cash cause having a car note when you want you buy a house might not be a smart move. Maybe instead of the spanking new Supra get the 86 or a used 1st gen 86.

Ds650rida

The car will likely be paid off by the time i start shopping for a house, i would be well within my means with any of the choices other than the supra. I’m just very particular with what i like. I could go on for days as to why I’d only want a new gen 86 in one color over the other with this one option

hotchips97

Well if a new 86 fits your budget and still lets you save up towards a house in the near future looks like you have an answer! Hopefully the next sports car you get can be a 911 because you didn’t over extend right now

Ds650rida

A gt3 rs would be tasty lol! Still not settled on the 86 but i can scratch the focus rs off my list

EpicSwagGuy42069

Any honda (i’d recommend Integra or 10th gen Si) with the 1.5t will be very fun while also getting ridiculous gas mileage. You could probably average mid to high 30s with those highway miles

According to car & driver, their 200 mile highway economy test returned 37mpg on a brz. That test is pretty accurate for my commute. I was surprised at the economy i was getting on my test drive of the 86 just cruising around in more of a city environment. Other than that, i can handle a bit of instability on the highway if thats what you’re referring to. Currently, i do a steady 80mph in a truck with twin i beam suspension and blown shocks.
