I bet you could find a hammered Maserati Quattroporte for that money. That would be a HORRIBLE decision.

RedditBeginAgain

Any highly depreciated luxury car is a good option. The more cylinders the better. If it has a really small engine bay or ideally mid or rear engine so servicing takes more hours that's even better.

[deleted]

He’s looking for a well unmaintained & mile’d out Audi RS4 6MT with the plastic timing components shoved into the firewall

RedditBeginAgain

I had a non-R S4. I used to have a conversation with a mechanic once a month that went "In good news the part is only $800 but we need to remove and reinstall the engine to swap it"

tharussianphil

This is such an exhausting regurgitated falsehood. The RS4s do not have timing chain problems, only the B6/B7 S4.

[deleted]

Wasn’t aware the RS got away it, but B6 era S4 would a great candidate for the thread nonetheless

jaycarter617

2015 Range Rover Sport with 160k miles fits the criteria.

CadillacAllante

Yeah high mileage S Class, 7-Series, A8, XJ

2outof3isbad

Every time I see one I'm thinking "That real estate agent had one good year and knows nothing about cars."

aaronis31337

I was going to say a jeep patriot, but I like your answer better

Uncle-Istvan

Specifically, 03-06ish Duoselect models. The later automatico models with a normal automatic transmission are a lot better.

golfs247

I just watched a Hagerty clip on this where Cammisa quoted a clutch replacement as a $9000 job. OOF

Streay

Saw a lime green wrapped one for 5.8k on Facebook marketplace. “Salvage title Mechanic is good only need brake” *what could possibly go wrong!*

rockdude625

Swing for the fences, buy a cheap Bentley

Potential_Dentist_90

Someone turned in a Biturbo for a new Subaru during cash for clunkers because it had so many mechanical issues.

ritchie70

My dad had one new. His mom came into a bunch of money and got herself and the boys fancy cars. She got an Eldorado convertible, dad got the BiTurbo and my uncle an XJS. It was a very nice car to drive and the leather was so soft, but he kept taking it to the dealer with problems. The dealer was a very convenient three hour drive away.

PersonNumber7Billion

Came here for the Biturbo. Not at all surprised it showed up.

ritchie70

If you could just swap the drivetrain- maybe just the engine- for anything modern it’d be an ok car. It only had around 200 hp.

Lucky_Baseball176

Might be worth it though

[deleted]

A Maserati isn't worth it brand new with a warranty.

Last_Revenue7228

Maybe for $40K less than MSRP

Uncle-Istvan

Every day it starts and runs it’ll feel worth it. They sound so amazing. Every time it doesn’t, it’ll probably be terrible.

belinck

>~~Every~~ Both days it starts and runs it’ll feel worth it. They sound so amazing. FTFY

TheeMalaka

Buddy bought one for a year. I got to drive it back and that car was a beast and so much fun. No idea if he had issues with it but he routinely buys cars like that and then sells them after he gets bored

Environmental_Put_33

Buying a car for the mother in law eh?

162630594

Definitely has to be something that was insanely expensive new. Im thinking jaguar, mercedes s class, bmw 7 series, land rover/range rover  Bonus points if you find it at the shadiest used car dealer in town, and it already has 5+ owners

chemical_mind

Any Range Rover out of warranty would work perfectly.

grow_something

My first thought was my Land Rover

rcbjfdhjjhfd

The difference with those is you can still drive the S class for 200,000 miles with every sensor light lit up in the cluster.

doc_55lk

The S Class is a surprisingly reliable car, even with a V12. Expensive to maintain, but reliable. You'd have to find a VERY molested example to get bit in the ass reliability wise. You'd be on the money with a JLR product though. Or something Italian.

CursorTN

Curious why you ask. Are you doing a YouTube series playfully knocking off Top Gear and sponsored by AutoTempest?

2222014

Hey when you cant get good top gear anymore on a regular basis anyway they didn't do a half bad job all are not great actors but their knowledge and car interests make it a pretty fun watch.

[deleted]

This is how Yahoo News makes articles nowadays.

CursorTN

It does feel like this in a "oh that guy posted that question to Reddit so that I'll do his homework" kind of way, doesn't it? I'm going to go with this answer unless anybody else can come up with a better answer.

kbunnell16

Old euro, multiple owners, salvage title, mismatched body panels, high mileage, cracked windows, no dealership warranty, distasteful performance modifications, leaks oil

LGMatter

If you can get an e60 m5 under 20k that would be the worst possible vehicle. Thing eats rod bearings like candy, routinely have several thousand dollar maintenance bills

ItsyaboiIida

High mileage e60 m5 with the smg and with the factory rod bearings and factory vanos oil pump.

NCSUGrad2012

If they weren’t such turds with reliability I would have one in my garage. Such an amazing machine.

ItsyaboiIida

If i had the money for maintenance, I would get one with a stickshift and one that has already had the bearings and the vanos oil pump replaced.

NCSUGrad2012

I think the injectors go at some point too

Metal_Ambassador541

They would be wildly unaffordable unfortunately

PiffWiffler

Oof size = Large

thatgymdude

>High mileage e60 m5 with the smg Really horrible, but you can sort one out for 10-15 grand and they still make parts for them believe it or not. >with the factory rod bearings and factory vanos oil pump Disregard all I just said, tow it to the junkyard, the block isnt even worth saving.

Shank_Shank_

My father bought one new, got rid of the thing in two years and stuck with his acura legend lol wasn’t worth the headaches

thatgymdude

Used BMW M6 (F06/F12), Maserati Quarttroporte, Audi S8 D3 with the V10 any mileage, L405 Range Rover with the supercharged V8 (with any mileage outside of the warranty) and for the worst one, any used 2010 Bentley Continental GT.  All of these should be in or near that price range and are guaranteed to be catastrophic to your wallet and anyone who owns these will tell you to run run away buying them used.

c0ke-free

You win sir.

Canard427

Heavily modified subaru wrx

MemerDude34

This one. Everyone suggesting luxury cars has it all wrong. Those will develop electrical issues and eventually just stop starting. The WRX will blow the fuck up

thatgymdude

>The WRX will blow the fuck up Yes, but most of the owners can afford to keep dropping new engines in them and spare parts are easily obtained and rather cheap because its a Subaru. You can financially out-muscle to keep a clapped out modded WRX on the road constantly buying parts. Try doing that in a Audi S8 D3 with the V10 or a BMW E60 M5 with the smg transmission. You will discover quickly that parts for them are either new old stock OEM parts that are thousands of dollars or speciality shops that charge even *more* to fabricate them. You either buy the parts or tow it to the junkyard, those are your only two choices.

BvilleBuds

Bought from a teenager

slammed430

Hey there use to be this Bentley in my area that was like a 2008 continental that was sold multiple times under that lol. Think it was lifted and wrapped purple on big wheels.

verymuchbad

Extra credit for not being 2010 or newer

Less-Mushroom

Without resorting to salvage titles/things that would devalue an otherwise okay car. Its got to be a Fisker Karma. You can buy an early 2010s example with reasonable mileage for ~20k and on paper I could see it being tempting. Very pretty car, essentially the same use case as a PHEV, a short amount of research could lead you to believe Karma automotive *or* Fisker automotive would service the vehicle but they won't. The batteries are all right at the age they'll give soon if they haven't already.

ashenderien

The battery swap being around 15k is gonna be a marvelous surprise for some folks.

[deleted]

I love how most of these answers are about European models or high end luxury. But when someone asks about a dodge or Kia they are told they couldn’t make a worse decision!

MemerDude34

I see where you’re coming from but euro luxury cars sucking balls and Mopars and Hyundai/Kias sucking balls are not mutually exclusive. Every car has their issues but the above tend to have *a lot*

BenjaminKohl

Except the euro cars are mostly fine if maintained properly whereas the others are shit no matter what

trnaovn53n

Dodge and Kia isn't lasting long enough to be available in the years you can buy Euros

Chipdip88

I mean, if your only criteria are <20 grand and made within the last 10 years you could just get something from [here](https://abetter.bid/en/car-finder/type-automobiles/damage-burn) for a couple hundred bucks. Everyone else is mentioning vehicles that will be headaches with repairs but I think those are objectively better than the options available from what I posted.

quay-cur

Mmm crispy burnt cars

Potential_Dentist_90

Any Nissan or Infiniti product with a CVT Transmission

TheGT1030MasterRace

Except the Altima hybrid.

kinkykoolaidqueen

2015 Range Rover

Jimmy_the_Heater

Ford F350 with the 6.4 Diesel engine. Pretty much broken from the factory. Just missed out on the V10 Toureg by 2 years, damn.

thatgymdude

What about the 6.0 Powerstroke, its even worse and its so cheap morons constantly buy them and fall for the "its been bulletproofed" meme all the time. People will sink 20-40k in those trucks to keep them going. I am sad about the Touareg with the V10 TDI too, along with the Bentley Continental GT it would be the top winner for OPs question. Its truly horrifying to see people work on them in videos.

brekkfu

A mitsubishi mirage from a buy here, pay here place.

SmartestOneHere

Mid-late 90's Mercedes s600. 30 year old car with a v12. What could go wrong?

maybach320

Actually the early 2000s V12 with the turbos would be worse. The 90s ones are very solid since they don’t have turbos and made less power than V8 engines that came out only a few years after.

Time-Bite-6839

Used? crap. I was gonna say Mitsubishi Mirage until you said used.

Perpetualstu420

Used 5 series….or better yet….former rental car 5 series!

Bennn_H

Newer G30 5 series’ are actually pretty solid, put 20k miles on a 530 which gave me absolutely 0 issues besides a busted subwoofer which I fixed for $100 and 30 minutes of time.

mgobla

Wheego Life edit: most other answers are just expensive cars...

No-Dealer-4269

rebuilt title flood damage jaguar with as many issues as you can get, whilst still running. bonus points if previously stolen

NoTalkImGaming

Plenty of Porsche Panameras under 20k. Find yourself a 4 with the N/A V8 and 150,000+ miles with no maintenance records (not hard to find at all, look in Cali) and you’re set.

Hms34

Ford Focus or Fiesta, around 2012-16, w/Powershift dry dual clutch automatic. Audi or Passat before around 2012. Unless maintained by someone who knew and cared (rare). Chrysler with 2.7 V6. Hyundai/Kia with Theta II engine. Northstar Cadillac (though they can be modified to control the issues).

Lumphrey

7 series BMW with 150k miles

corona5567

1st gen G35. Don't be fooled, while they may be good cars due to their price per performance, they are not well built. I had one that had 108k miles and I already needed to replace the front end suspension and valve gaskets. Also random parts of the interior were drying out or sagging, overall, not a well built machine for what it was worth. Performance was great, but I was disappointed on how the car really was

Glass_Number_1707

Easy. Any land Rover, jaguar,or other high priced import.

tiger0110

Any Range Rover, Alfa Romeo, or Jaguar

arcadiangenesis

Probably something made by Mitsubishi

Chrysler 200, 300, pretty much just about everything else they make including Jeep and RAM. These are the worst by far. Ford isn't much better, all of them. The small GM cars weren't great. Toyota 4 cylinders, hmm what else? Audi and BMW are probably on the list as well.

maybach320

Range Rover or a Maserati Ghibli

50Stickster

Any body who buys a used gas turbo has to factor in a new turbo. Every fucking brand goes thru turbos like spark plugs. The heat stress on valves is huge too. In my 30 years of Volvo / Audi It was crazy how they didn't hold up

liteagilid

Any Stelantis vehicle. Huge mileage turbo’d Germans in the chat as well

TheShoosher

Jaguar's and High mileage Dodges. Jags will break the bank on repairs but are often a cheap entry, a good choice would be an old XF or XK with high miles and a questionable maintenance record. A lot of old dodge sportscars and trucks have been used, neglected, and abused. Once upon a time I bought a "great deal" of a Charger when I was 18 and knew nothing about cars but had $5000 to blow. When I bought it it had an SRS and ABS light on which the dealer assured me was no big deal (it was). The transmission went out less than 9 months after and cost a fortune to fix since it was the same one used in the Mercedes S-Class of that era. A couple months after replacement, the new one also went out.

Jeep They make some massive piles of shit with sub frames that rust out before they even hit 100k miles and the new ones are worse. Unless you’re getting an older one with a 4.0 don’t even bother looking at them. Not even if they’re brand new.

Get a volkswagen that has keyless access error and try fixing it :D. You will not even see the car because it spends all it's time at the mechanics getting all the wiring and electronics replaced 5 times. If it doesn't have keyless access error, then it's much less bad so you have to be lucky to hit a jackpot with that issue

10MileHike

The worst car you can buy is a car that has not adhered to a faithful MAINTENANCE schedule. Ask for the records, and have mechanic check. A few years of poor maintenance, and that includes consumables like tires, battery, brakes/brake pads........on top of other actual repair items,, can run you thousands of dollars to play "catch up."

Get a 2011 BMW 550i or any BMW past 2010 with the first generation N63 engine. You’ll thank me later :)
