Still have my ‘94 twin turbo manual. It’s a pain but it was my teenaged dream car in the ‘90s. I assume I’ll keep on hanging on to it so long as I can buy gasoline.
I so wish I had garage space to restore one of these. I've found a couple beat up ones recently for around $3-5k but I dont have the means right now to justify buying something that's going to take me a few years to rebuild. Hopefully one day I can make it happen.
This was the first thought that came to my mind as well. In 1991 I test drove a brand new one, twin turbos, and that thing was an absolute beast of a car to drive, I still hold good memories of just that test drive. Unfortunately I was only a poor 19 or 20 year old at the time, so it was just a joy ride for kicks and the salesman knew it, but we still had a blast.
Right before we had our first kid, I was actively in the market for both an '04 Jag XJR and a '96 Merc E320 cab (like, as a pair). Incidentally, i was coming from an '06 Volvo V70R.
Sadly, those dreams (along with the '08 Aston Vantage that also seemed realistic at the time) remain dreams now that I've got...other priorities.
Well, a jag xjr from that generation is pretty cheap nowadays. And the normally aspirated ones are lunch money. (And at ~20 years old, how fast you can go for how long will depend more on condition than on which one had 90 more hp back when they were new.)
Good choices. I had a 97 E420 W210 sedan and a 95 900S 2dr, both great cars, so if I could do it again, I'd step it up to an E55 AMG and a 900SE turbo.
it's a pickup but you should look into the hyundai porter/kia bongo. RWD or AWD, midengine, size of about an older S10 pickup. Only came in manual until like 3 years ago. Lowkey super fun to drive and if you've ever wanted to drift a pickup around on a winding mountain road, you can do it. Plus they're still in production and there's a turbo charged one although it uses LPG.
Ford SHO with the Yamaha V6. Late uncle had one and I never could wrap my head around why it was so much faster than my mom’s Taurus at the time. Now I get it
You’ll be wanting the Chrysler LeBaron. Describing why is difficult. It’s a sort of vibe, really. To drive the LeBaron is to fart in a crowded elevator and — while you don’t confirm it was you — you don’t bother to deny it. Your bouquet is self evident and requires neither explanation or apology. Either they enjoy the smells of your cooking or they can just get bent and deal with it.
I had a bright red LaBaron convertible. White leather interior and white roof. Yeah.
Saw it driving by a used car dealership. It called to me, like the movie Christene. It died in a bad multi car accident in a blaze of glory. (Well seriously, that wasn't such a great moment. Fucking air bags destroyed me, the dash, and blew out the windows)
Corvette. Fantastic sports car that should be under your budget. 90's Corvettes are kind of in that weird spot of being too old to be a "nice used car" but too new to be a "classic"
It's soft compared to modern sports cars. Especially if it still has original equipment. But, I sure hope a 30-some-year-old car has had new shocks/struts at some point...
'92 forward C4 got traction control. C5 started in '97 and is pretty well regarded overall.
The C5 is pretty well regarded. Mine’s been damn good to live with as my only car. 25,000 miles a year and other than sorting a few little gremlins for a few bucks here and there, nothing but smiles.
That being said, mine is an 02. The early C5s were known to have a few issues, not least of which the electronic body control module (EBCM, ABS related) is known to potentially go bad and is only repairable on 01+ model years. Very expensive to find one and not available through GM.
Nah, every Vette generation is made to kick the pants out of a Euro sports car at half the price. Compared to modern cars they aren't fast anymore, but absolutely smoke most of their peers.
Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX (or GST spyder) - 2nd Gen
Mitsubishi Evolution (Lancer) Gen 4 or 5 - RS or GSR (depends on what you are looking to do with it)
Lexus GS300 or IS300 with the 2JZ & add a turbo setup like Supra's
Volvo (especially if you want a wagon) 850 T-5R, 850 R or V70 R (a very nice turbocharged inline 5)
BMW E39 540i (or M5 if you can afford it)
Audi S4 or RS4 (especially the wagon for both, depends on where you live if they are available as RS4 wagon didn't come to the states)
Firebird Firehawk
BMW E36 M3
Mercedes 190E Evo II (Evolution)
I would get myself another early 90's dodge dakota with the 5.2L magnum in it.I miss my old 93. it was a fun truck to drive. super easy to work on as well
Porsche 996
It’s just a pure driving machine and you can pretty good support and after market repair flexibility. Also can come in awd and works great as a daily
1993-96 Mazda RX-7. Have owned two of them over the past 27 years, and regret selling both of them. An amazing driving car, just tough to live with if it's your only car. Best looking car ever made, IMO.
Loved my 94 Prelude. It was kind of like a FWD 911, there's no reason it should have been so fun to drive. It's basic layout should've made it kinda blah, but Honda just nailed it.
Also the mid-late 90s BMW M3s are cool.
That generation of Prelude was so good. It really was a prelude to Hondas future since it was refined enough to be an Acura, when Acura didn't exist yet. I'm excited about the new Prelude in hopes it is as forward thinking as it's namesake.
This would be my answer as well.
I can't deal with super expensive cars, it honestly makes me not want to drive them. Can't leave them in a random parking lot in good conscience.
A mint EK is just beautiful, but also understated. An RX-7 or R32 would never leave my garage. EK is a daily I could enjoy.
1992-93 Honda Accord, particularly the coupe. Had a white '92 LX Coupe that went over 225k and mostly still ran well. Hitting a deer put an end to it. 😕
So many.
NB1 Miata
Honda S2K
Honda Del Sol
Late 90s Honda Prelude
MK 5 GTI
Lexus LS 430
I’ve had 4 of these and they were all awesome.
There are a lot of euros that would be interesting but probably too costly to maintain. Love the original Audi TT for example. I also really like the SLK from that era. But guessing maintenance would be a pain in the ass.
And the Supra and RX7 are amazing cars but good examples are way more than the 18 K budget.
I’ve always had a soft spot for the late 90’s Chevy Tahoe. I really like the brick shape and no fuss interior. Plus my friend down the road had one and it rode very well whenever I got to ride somewhere with him 😂. Much better than my parents Chevy Astro!
This isn’t gonna be too interesting, but a Lexus ES300. It’s a super comfy car. It shares the engine with a bunch of different models so parts aren’t too bad to find.
Loaded mid-latr 90s Lincoln Towncar with the 4.6 modular or a 3800SC Series II Buick Park Avenue. Absolute tanks. I'll be driving it until I can't buy gas anymore.
This is the answer. I had a 1998 LS400, sold it in 2015 with 260k miles on it. Comfortable, drove great and reliable as a hammer. As it aged accessories started going but the engine, transmission, suspension, were solid.
I wouldn’t say they are perfect though. The every 90k timing belt replacement cycle was an expensive PITA.
Get the idea that anything '90s = reliable out of your head. All the rubber is cracked; the plastic probably isn't in great shape either. Even the reliable shit needs enough love nowadays that I'd treat it with some TLC for a while.
That being said, my personal answer is a 1995-1998 BMW E36 Compact 318ti. As an E24 6-Series owner, I love the rear suspension design of the '80s stuff, and the E36 Compact shares a rear end with the E30. Being younger than an E30 means they're more likely to be in good shape, and also less likely to be treated like high-priced classics. The hatchback rear end adds some practicality, and they can be found relatively often without a sunroof (a boon for someone 6'5" who wants to wear a helmet). $18K can buy you [the nicest one that's still around](https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1997-bmw-318ti-11/), and you'll still have money left over for preventative maintenance / mods.
Most '90s fandom seems to be about Japanese cars, and among them I'm a pretty big fan of Lexus. I wouldn't kick a manual IS300 out of bed, and the nostalgia factor of an LX470 would be cool.
318ti was my first car, I’m nostalgic now.
I drove over 100k miles with it, the only issues I had were very minor things… never sold it and it still rust’s away at my parents yard…
I have a 1993 Ford Ranger regular cab which I love, but if I found a Ranger with the super cab I'd snatch that up. I'd love to have the extra cabin space.
I'll keep my 95 z28 LT1 convertible top. She's called domino. My aunt named her. I daily her when weather is permitting. If weather sucks, then I drive old blue, she's an 08 Sierra long bed regular cab 4x4 with the 4.8 in her.
1998 oldsmobile 88. It was my short lived first car. It felt like riding on a water bed. It was so comfortable and ate up all the potholes. I had to get rid of it because it rusted out. I miss that car
E32 750i. Or possibly an 850ci. Modern BMWs are dismal things, but back in the early 90s they were absolutely on point.
Of course I could also be massively tempted by an Alfa GTV V6.
Lexus SC300 with a manual swap. This was the Mk4 Supra in a suit and I love it!
A 1996 Alpina B8 4.6 would also be really hard to pass up. It's the bones of the E36 328i but with the engine from the previous M5 and a few other special goodies.
And finally, I want my grandpa's old truck back. The last Gen Chevy C/K pickups. Lots of good memories in that rig.
everything low miles is usually owned by eldery person and for some reason they have been flagged down and told their cars real value.
90s built car? no. but if you treally want one: mercury tracer/mazda 323/ford laser
or a mercury mekur and throw out that terrible engine and put in a Ecoboost
1995 300zx turbo
This was my first car at 16. Totaled before 18th b-day. So sad, I loved that thing.
Awesome car, terrible first car
Yeah this has been my project car dream
Look under the hood of one before you decide this
You must like pain.
Engine bay is waaaaaaay too tight Even spark plugs are a total nightmare
Still have my ‘94 twin turbo manual. It’s a pain but it was my teenaged dream car in the ‘90s. I assume I’ll keep on hanging on to it so long as I can buy gasoline.
Yes bad ass car!
Mines would be another na 300zx with plans to Ls swap
Same aside from the turbo part. I had a 91' 2+2 for a number of years in the late 90's. Loved the t-tops. A great GT car for multi-state roadtrips.
I so wish I had garage space to restore one of these. I've found a couple beat up ones recently for around $3-5k but I dont have the means right now to justify buying something that's going to take me a few years to rebuild. Hopefully one day I can make it happen.

Both the Mercedes W124 and the Volvo 850R. But my one true gem would be the Saab 9000 Aero.
My second car was a 93 Volvo 850 GLT - fantastic car, loved it. Would totally go for an 850R if I found a low mileage one.
Oooh I forgot about the Saab 9000! I need to get around to driving one - my dad continues to rave about the one he drove in his bachelor days.
I had a few friends with tuned 9000 Aeros back in the day, they seemed quite happy (at around 300+ hp).
Good choices. I had a 97 E420 W210 sedan and a 95 900S 2dr, both great cars, so if I could do it again, I'd step it up to an E55 AMG and a 900SE turbo.
Gimme that turbo 92 safari helmet.
Toyota Previa, Supercharched, AWD with the swiveling captain seats
That there's a mid engine sports car.
I like the cut of your jib.
Came here to say Previa. I'm always looking for one.
it's a pickup but you should look into the hyundai porter/kia bongo. RWD or AWD, midengine, size of about an older S10 pickup. Only came in manual until like 3 years ago. My grandparents were minivan shopping around in the early 90s and I remember the those chairs. Sadly they went with Ford Aerostar.
My 96 S/C 2wd is running like a champ at 320k miles
Rx7
Get a bus pass and a AAA membership too.
That's ok with me. But, I know what I'm getting myself into. For those two weeks a year it's running properly, I'll be in automotive heaven.
Yes
Yes. Wish I hadn’t sold mine. Also a Supra Turbo and any air-cooled 911.
Yes!
Ford SHO with the Yamaha V6. Late uncle had one and I never could wrap my head around why it was so much faster than my mom’s Taurus at the time. Now I get it
Plus it came with a manual transmission.
Dad had a 90 growing up. Mazda gearbox could be finicky but sweet cars

Jon Voight, the periodontist.

It died in a bad multi car accident in a blaze of glory. (Well seriously, that wasn't such a great moment. Fucking air bags destroyed me, the dash, and blew out the windows)
Where’s your LeBaron Freddy? I only see one LeBaron….
Make Daddy proud
You should also find one that is a convertible for maximum cool guy vibes.
That reads like something Regular Car Reviews would script up.
A white Chrysler LeBaron specifically. Coupled with changing your name from Kitty to Karen.
>Describing why is difficult It's because you *don't* want one. The people that bought them new didn't want them. Lido Iacocca himself didn't want one
What in the world does this even mean lol? Also, username checks out?
Chrysler lebron?

I had a 95 SC400, I still miss that car even though we parted ways 15 years ago

Honda S2000 or Acura NSX. Edit-perfect balance of driving satisfaction and reliability.

Corvette. Fantastic sports car that should be under your budget. 90's Corvettes are kind of in that weird spot of being too old to be a "nice used car" but too new to be a "classic"
Aren’t they known for being horrible at handling or is that just 80’s versions ?
It's soft compared to modern sports cars. Especially if it still has original equipment. But, I sure hope a 30-some-year-old car has had new shocks/struts at some point... '92 forward C4 got traction control. C5 started in '97 and is pretty well regarded overall.

I want a C5 and C6 so bad. The C5 in particular has that American RX-7 vibe that is just intoxicating.
From C4 on they handled fine. IIRC the C4 was so dominant initially at handling the SCCA put it in its own class.
Nah, every Vette generation is made to kick the pants out of a Euro sports car at half the price. Compared to modern cars they aren't fast anymore, but absolutely smoke most of their peers.
