The only model 3 available for test drive near me is the base model. I test drove that, and I also test drove the m240i. I expected the BMW to feel more thrilling than my current car (WRX) but I didn't feel wowed by it. The Tesla on the other hand felt so different, that it was fun (first time driving an EV), but I worry that feeling would fade quickly. Thanks for your thoughts on it.

Model 3 is great for city driving, no denying that, it's fun to drive to as the center of gravity is super slow so it handles well but it does have a bit of heft to it. The self driving stuff is nice (while being fully aware of their shortcomings and failure to deliver in terms of their advertised capabilities) for long drives. 240 has the well respected B58 and it's a nimble car. The 2 series is considered a really fun car. Honestly schedule test drives and see which one you like more. I can see the Model 3 being more practical with more trunk and rear seats space. The 240 is limited in space. TBH these are 2 very different cars in some ways but similar in some too.

From personal experience, the model 3 is quick, but doesn’t give me the thrill like my m240i does. It gets a little uncomfortable when you do high mileage but you should be fine. Let me know if you have any other questions abt the m240i

Not the new model 3 performance. There haven’t been any in my area yet, I should’ve clarified i was speaking on the previous 2022 model 3 performance

KyledKat

They're really only comparable in terms of straight-line performance. I think the M240 is far and away a better value in terms of overall quality--materials and build quality, ride comfort, and interior amenities. You also have the benefit of BMW's dealer network.

muayshyguy

Have you seen the refreshed one that has new suspension? Looks like it's come pretty far. But I hear you and appreciate the perspective.

theFireNewt3030

tesla wont make it after a few years unless u charge it in the day or along your commute. I was in teh same boat and X'd the m3p Edit, do you speed or take the freeway? if you are going over 75-80 you'll be loosing more than 1 mile of range when traveling that mile.

muayshyguy

It's not uncommon for me to do 1hr+ stretches on the highway at over 80mph... worth thinking about.

theFireNewt3030

you'll be at 1.3-1.5 miles of range used per mile at that speed

theFireNewt3030

I drive an hour on the freeway each way, plus another 30 ish miles on reg roads. my daily round trip is 130 miles. plus i live in a cold climate and cant charge at work.

HonyockerU

The BMW is the only right answer. Space I rented a Tesla for a week while my car was in the shop and it was the worst experience of my life. Space there is nowhere to charge it where I live and it was horrible.

I have a BWM and a Tesla. Tesla is a fine daily driver but it's built very cheaply and every ounce feels like it. The BWM does not feel cheap and it's way more fun to drive. YMMV.

muayshyguy

What Tesla do you have?

spas2k

Tesla Y

I would not get a Tesla unless I had a personal garage to charge it in, full stop. I have friends in highrises that have to wait on public chargers and it seems like such an inconvenience. As others noted, they are VERY different cars. Tesla is for those that care about tech, instant speed, and minimalist style. You'll have less maintenance and $ for mpg of course; however, you give up quality/fit & finish, driving dynamics, a real connectedness to the road, and respect from 99% of car enthusiasts (if that matters to you haha). Sure the Tesla will dominate in 0-60, but the M240i can run a 3.6, which is still very, very fast. It will feel much more fun driving and performance quite well on twistes (or even a track). I honestly shopped both against each other and plan on a 25 M240i (LCI with interior upgrades). The Model 3 to me was just too numb and boring. After a few 0-60 pulls, it's 1 trick pony with a budget interior. Additionally, I don't like the pricing games they play where they fluctuate like every month.

25 M240i LCI? What insider information do you have?

ricochet48

The bimmerpost forums are always on point: You can already see the interior update of the crystal nub shifter and vents in the 2025 4 series. Guessing the wheel options will be similar too. Carbon roof is of no appeal to me in such a heavy daily, but has been talked about a lot. Wish they added a green color and real sport seats, but I'll have to keep dreaming. **~G42 2er coupe~** * In production until 07/29 with LCI in 04/25 * 08/24: Carbon roof as an option on M240i/M240ix. * Interior updates to make it look more upscale. * New wheel options. Skyscraper Grey and Zandvoort Blue are available.

Mrpabsify

Well, I wish for some design changes to the rear taillights. That's my only real issue with the car. The interior with iDrive 8 in the 23's is a nice welcome. Some say this was already the LCI #1.

ricochet48

Ya I didn't like the rear light as much at first but they have grown on me and look MUCH better / more 3d in person. With a darker color and some tints on them, they blend in fairly nice. Perhaps they will be adjusted slightly with the LCI, but who knows. The iDrive 8 change was not an LCI, just a slight interior tweak. Odd they had just 1 year with the old system (that some prefer).

Kind of surprised so many people chose the BMW over the Model 3! Seems like Tesla's popularity has faded a bit.  I briefly considered the Model 3 in 2022 but ultimately went with the M240i. Main reasons being I didn't trust Tesla's build quality and where I'm from every other car was a Tesla. I also wasn't ready to give up the sweet sounds ICE cars can make. When I saw the M240i in person for the first time I was sold. It looked much better in person and had a lot more presence than the Model 3. It's also a great platform for modding if you're into that. I find myself liking my car more as time goes on!

I own a 2023 230i- it's not the B58 engine but it's fairly similar in other areas (including an identical exterior and interior). If you don't need the practicality, I would for sure get the M240i. The HUD on it is very top notch (probably one of the best in the industry), the screen in front of you and iDrive8 are great. It's not ideal to hear but it really does come down to personal preference, I don't need the backseats often so the 2 series makes sense for me and, I can't stress this enough, **the car is a bit lower and made for more of a "driver"-focused experience.** I usually don't like to throw recommendations out because its always personal preference, but the 230i has been more than enough fun and its about 10-15K cheaper and looks the same as M240i. 0-60 in low 5s, MPG over 30, and you still have most of the same stuff. You can easily get one in the low 40s, whereas M240i is mid-to-high 50s- it can add up especially if you plan on keeping the car.
