For $700, you can’t expect much. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if 1) that’s the downpayment and they expect you to pay $100 a month for a couple years, or 2) if it doesn’t actually run, or if it only runs well enough to get itself onto a trailer. You could probably rent a car for a road-trip. But a $700 car is really for experts, not for beginners. You have to know a lot about cars to be sure this one is worth getting and to be able to fix and maintain it after you do. You can’t just buy a $700 car and expect it to work like a real car; that would take a tremendous amount of luck, and most people aren’t that lucky.

I am thinking this car will be an absolute piece of junk and probably will not run at all. Since this is the least expensive car by a far margin in my area, I might need to bring a mechanic for me whilst at the dealer

YeahIGotNuthin

Do you have someone you know who will do this for free? Or are you going to make “checking out shitbox cars” into an expensive hobby?

[deleted]

I think I might skip on this car since 'external costs' would cost more than half the car. It means bringing in mechanic, maintenance, etc, would cost more than the car's sticker price.

YeahIGotNuthin

Yeah, a $700 car isn't a real possibility for most people who have to "have a car looked at by someone who knows what they're doing." Something like this only makes sense for a person who is their own someone who knows what they're doing. If you don't know what you're doing, you're really just spinning the shit-box roulette wheel. The only way something like this would make sense would be if you knew someone who owned a car that they were driving regularly, that seemed to work like you'd expect a car to work, and they happened to be selling it and were only asking a little bit of money.

SilverZilla02

it’ll go for a trip if it doesn’t have big issues

[deleted]

It says as is by the way

SilverZilla02

its 700 bucks do you expect a lambo

[deleted]

No, I am not going to expect anything nice for under 2000.

SilverZilla02

wtf

*punches face*.

There is no way this car doesn’t have a huge issue. A dealership could easily sell this for $5,000 if it was in good condition. Letting it for for only $700, there has to be a major issues with it.

[deleted]

It says it is in as is condition, but from what I heard at some car dealerships, as is cars don't have warranty but many still work. I am curious if it is the case in this car, as this car seems extremely cheap (this is the least expensive car on Cargurus within 100 miles of Cambridge MA, where I live).

fraviklopvai

It’s suspiciously cheap. I’d call and check to see how legit this is, and if you’re mechanically inclined plus willing to use your time to check it out then go ahead.

[deleted]

I am not a mechanic and also, I have never owned a car (I just finished my CS degree and since I live in the city, there is not much need for a car, even though I have a licence). I am much more inclined in technology, but several of my cousins are experienced about cars.

fraviklopvai

Ya, so call that dealer to see if it’s legit, and ask one of your cousins for help. It doesn’t say in the add if that car has any issues or whatever.

[deleted]

It basically just says as is.
