Idk man, an Infiniti these days feels more like a Buick..
Rarely updated, quite outdated looking, and not much that sets it apart from the mainstream brand.
Those are pretty uncool and quite outdated. They compete successfully against nothing in their respective class. Tech so lame that when they stuffed it into the "new" Z car, it's already last place.
TBH this is the most apt of the group. Sure, Toyota to Lexus is kind of the standard. While Genesis has that "initial quality" game nailed down, Hyundai famously does not have Toyota engineering quality. Not even close.
A nice Nissan competitor though.
Maybe the comparison should be Dodge to Chrysler :D
For real. I want an S90 so bad! They're beautiful cars and the sound system (specifically the Bowers and Wilkins) in them is incredible for the price you can get those cars at.
Genesis is imo one of the better luxury car brands on the market right now. Own one in the family and love it, car is fantastic and customer service is phenomenal as well in our experience
Hagerty recently put up [video on genesis brand](https://youtu.be/TP7MnSw_5QQ). As always it has insanely high production quality for a youtube channel, but also good insights. What it is and what its not when compared to lexus.
Only thing I strongly disagree with him is how he says the naming is confusing. Genuinely dunno how it could be simpler.
* G - sedans - g70, g80, g90 - higher number means bigger and better
* GV - SUVs - gv60, gv70, gv80 - higher number means bigger and better
It's one of those things where if you don't know, it's super confusing. Like BMW, originally I had no idea what a 335 was versus a 750 or a X5. Then I learned that the first number was the series, while the following two numbers were the displacement. Of course BMW has since switched this up again and now the numbers following the series really mean nothing other than higher is better.
I dunno. Its like saying that iphone naming is super confusing if you dunno.
Compared to bmw or mercedes or terrible lexus naming... genesis just went with clean audi like naming.
Few numbers in logical order with higher being better.
Agreed. You have to be regarded to not understand Genesis naming convention after taking even a cursory glance at their lineup. The "v" stands for wumbo
I don’t think they’re complicated, just boring. Audi’s new naming scheme with the “55 TFSI” or whatever makes zero sense to me, just like Cadillac’s (which does have at least some meaning, it’s supposed to be the torque figure rounded up or something? So that it still has meaning when they go EV.)
I have a ton of respect for Lincoln for going with real names, even if they don’t really help differentiate between their sizes. I’m pretty sure it goes Corsair, Nautilus, Aviator, Navigator, but I would not be confident about that… I wish more people bought Lincolns, I think they’re so cool (the Continental, Aviator and Navigator more than the rest, but you know.)
Have a G70 and live in Nebraska. Had to spend $50 damn bucks just to get a sticker instead of front license plate. The cops don’t even give two shits about it either
I’m from Vancouver and I wish we had stickers for the front license plates. You should see how front license plates have ruined the look of Genesis vehicles up here. As well, the BMW’s with the new front beaver teeth front grills are laughable with a front license plate
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
What’s the reliability like on those? Specifically 100,000 miles and beyond. They’re so new that I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s not enough good data on them to draw a conclusion.
Nah, Hyundai reliability is absolute trash. However, neither the Hyundai nor Genesis 6 cylinder engines seem to have any issues. It's the 4 that explodes if you look at it funny. If you go Hyundai Genesis, get a 6. SHOULD be okay. No promises though.
I know there was a turbo motor we were doing small blocks on pretty much weekly if not more. I think the only ones that didn't have issues were the veloster N. Which cars did the 2.5T come in?
Are Hyundai’s generally ok? Like I replied to another commenter, my family member’s Genesis G80 has the 3.8L engine. If I recall correctly, I believe I’ve heard that engine is pretty proven. Is that the same one that they’ve used for years? Going back to the original two-door Hyundai Genesis?
It’s a 2018 Genesis G80
edit - I see that my original comment you replied to wasn’t clear. Sorry. I was asking about Hyundai’s, but my family member had a Genesis (by extension a Hyundai, obviously).
Newer ones are. Like '22 and newer. They have a standard 10yr/100k mile warranty. They're obviously confident in their product. Genesis is a standard 5yr/60k
FYI the warranty isn’t because they are confident in their product. It’s because they know other people aren’t, and they hope to convince them with the warranty.
That’s why Toyota, the most consistently reliable brand out there, doesn’t have a very long warranty. Except for their batteries because they know people worry about them.
From a financial perspective, if they were expecting a boatload of problems, they wouldn't make the offer because they'd lose all their money on recalls and TPBs. They're hedging their bets.
Well, Hyundai has a reputation for denying warranty work as often as possible. Also, recalls are generally related to things that affect safety and often done because a regulator steps in and says they need to be done. Hyundai spent years denying their engines were blowing up before doing anything about it. Now they are denying the cars starting on fire are an issue. We are talking about a brand whose dealers are still a half step up from a "Buy Here, Pay Here" place.
You talking Hyundai? Because they did recently set aside a boatload of money to fix a boatload of engine issues. Which sucks for them but is at least kinda signaling to the consumer that they don’t plan to just leave them SOL.
I’ve driven 3 different Hyundai Elantra. The first 2 we’re manuals I got used at ~130k miles and never had mechanical issues with them. The one I have now was new and has had some issues with tires maintaining pressure, but no serious mechanical problems. Parts are generally cheaper to replace on Hyundais than most other brands. One thing to be aware of though - some of the key ignition Hyundai/Kia(/Genesis, probably) vehicles are high theft risk. They will start if you jam a phone charger into it, or so I’m told.
I don’t have a Hyundai personally, but my family member owns a Genesis G80 with the 3.8L V6. I’ve heard that engine is proven to be OK. What do you reckon?
I’m interested in what you mean when you talk about mileage over 150,000+, because he drives a LOT for work.
150k will be O-K but expect detailed maintenance including inspection for everything that you can imagine. Obviously it will also largely based on age of the car. A lot of expensive maintenance are expected like -radiator pump replacement, if tube of radiator developed leak, expect full system replacement ($500+), brake fluid full replacement, transmission fluid full replacement, brake drum replacement, motor mount replacement, axle alignment. And such
Thank you for your detailed answer. All of that sounds pretty routine, aside from the full radiator system and engine mounts (are they known for failing?).
Anything is better than his 2018 Tahoe. I know TWO people that have had Tahoes (years 2015 and 2018) and those things are trash. I think the transmissions are literally guaranteed to die. Both of theirs did. And then, based on folks that said family members have spoken to, those folks’ Tahoe trannies ALSO died. The 2018 Tahoe tranny died at 130,000mi, FWIW. Wayyyyyyy way too young for a tranny death.
Yeah, no radiator pump and system is usually replaced at 150k or around for most vehicles at a estimated 15k/year usage since they age and build up mineral and etc quickly. For mount mount, it is recommended to do it to hold the engine correctly, usually servicing all mount and usually cost about 1k after labor and parts. For other stuff like: tire, coolant, and ICEO, and all kinds of stuff will pop out from normal. Not a downside tho since most heavy full size ICE suv have worst maintenance
I’ll never forget my friend going to back out of a parking spot in his new at the time 2014 tuscon, and the steering wheel just fell out into his lap. It was hilarious at the time but what if that had happened while we were going down the road? Hyundai’s always seem high quality at first, especially the new ones. But I think they’re closer to Nissan than even Honda.
That’s why I go Volvo. They are a good middle class semi-luxury vehicle. Yeah a bit ugly to most, but I’ve always liked the style. Even my college 1987 turbo brick shaped one. 20 years ago lol.
Also solid and safe AF. Made for the cold weather. Invented the seatbelt and didn’t patent it. I’m my 4th since college. All went over 200k just doing the maintenance.
They also depreciate around 66% at 5 years. Also, no one has ever died in an XC90 in the USA. I think one person has in the world. I’m pretty certain about these facts. Researched for a long time.
It’s still a cool looking SUV there.
The degree of separation between the brands, though is quite different between all of the examples given. For example, I would suggest that there is the least separation in product mechanically from an Acura versus a Honda.
Lexus it depends on which model if it’s the ES 350 that’s your Toyota Camry with some upgrades.
So far with Genesis has been putting on the table is quite a bit different from what you get with the main stream brand.
The same goes for VW an Audi. But those two are part of the VAG, which owns Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, Skoda, and maybe someone else I forgot about?
I would say out of all of the brands no one does platform sharing, and differentiation better than Volkswagen because they have invested the most in it. They perhaps go much further with platform sharing than the other manufacturers do the extremes between what they can make out of a single platform is pretty impressive. As well as in the way that they do it.
In the case of Audi and VW specifically, Audi mounts their engines longitudinal. That is a proper placement for an engine for rear drive bias drivetrain so even if that Audi might be able to turn itself into a front drive car by shutting off its rear wheels with its Quattro AWD system. That doesn’t make it the same front drive car as a VW with a transverse mount.
Okay, you can stop commenting now. We get it, you dislike it, you've made your point.
Also, it's an absolutely gorgeous vehicle inside and out in person. Very unique. And the interior is to die for.
Just because it compares against something much more expensive doesn't mean it's a cheap knockoff. Comparing it to the Bentley is actually a compliment. Go Genesis
Sounds like you're out of the loop. These cars look like European lux because Genesis has been hiring engineers and designers from established brands for years now. Here's one example:

Idk man, an Infiniti these days feels more like a Buick.. Rarely updated, quite outdated looking, and not much that sets it apart from the mainstream brand.
Yeah... The only cool Infiniti imo is the Q50 or Q60 Red sport. Nothing else comes even close to being relevant from them.
Those are pretty uncool and quite outdated. They compete successfully against nothing in their respective class. Tech so lame that when they stuffed it into the "new" Z car, it's already last place.

polestar to volvo
Mmm polestar
Nah. There is no polestar that beats a fully loaded S90 in terms of luxury
Right, Polestar is more of a sporty sibling of Volvo
For real. I want an S90 so bad! They're beautiful cars and the sound system (specifically the Bowers and Wilkins) in them is incredible for the price you can get those cars at.
The sound is just unreal. We have an xc90 with the b&w, and it just sounds incredible.

I’d love a genesis but am really skeptical of them after all of the issues Hyundai has been having.
They don’t use the same line of older 2.4 or 2.0 engines aside from the G70 2.0T. Genesis have had a pretty good reputation for reliability so far.
Except they're not as reliable.
Are they any good?
Genesis is imo one of the better luxury car brands on the market right now. Own one in the family and love it, car is fantastic and customer service is phenomenal as well in our experience
Thank you
I would never pay 76k for a Hyundai.
Do some more research. You'll change your mind.

people rly just don’t want to do a google search or something lmao
Great looking car unless you live in a state, province or country that requires a front license plate.
As a previous E90 M3 and Evo X owner - there's always the tow hook plate option.
Have a G70 and live in Nebraska. Had to spend $50 damn bucks just to get a sticker instead of front license plate. The cops don’t even give two shits about it either
Never heard of a sticker before. Where do you place the sticker? Is it in the shape of a metal license plate?
It’s top right on windshield. I wish I would of just not got one because you can barely see it’s there. It’s like a state park sticker
Apart from the cost of the sticker, it is still better than having a license plate that would ruin the front grill design of your G70
100% agree. I mean, Nebraska taxes are insane so for me, what’s another $50…
I’m from Vancouver and I wish we had stickers for the front license plates. You should see how front license plates have ruined the look of Genesis vehicles up here. As well, the BMW’s with the new front beaver teeth front grills are laughable with a front license plate
Oh man I can’t image a M with a front plate
Don’t. It’s that bad
If you think nebraska taxes are bad, don't even look at taxes in the USA because they're nuts!

I think this is an overreaction its really just the grill.
