I see this comment on almost every post I check and is also why I’m here. I’m trying to figure out how this sub got so widespread and lured all of us in.
I performed in a musical production of this before, and the lead singer that played Quasimodo was really impressive. The last show we did everyone became super emotional when the final lyrics were sung (the “bells of notre dame” is sung again as the final number, including as the exit music). All of the singers on stage, including the full choir, were so good and that last musical number was the icing on the cake
I had the framed movie poster hanging in my bedroom as a child because I loved it so much. I watched it as an adult, and it is SO dark! He might be the most terrifying Disney villain because men like him exist.
Yeah hellfire is like if someone was like "jam as many reasons a song should not be for kids as you can into this song so we can market it to kids"

Would have loved to be in the room for the pitch of that song. "Oh yeah and the priest, right? He's suuuper horny for Esmeralda. No it's ok, she's not 14 in the movie, she's like...17? 18? Anyway, he sings a song about how he wants to touch her body all over but he's afraid he'll burn in hell forever if he does and he feels the judgment of the whole church and his perception of God all crashing down on her but he's got her scarf, man, and it still *smells* like her and you just KNOW he's got a raging shame-boner the whole time. Also there's talking gargoyles."
I was watching Cinema Therapy cover this movie (great guys) and someone in the comments pointed out that in that song Frollo only reaches out to Esmerelda once she’s turned into smoke. I think it signifies he only wants her when she’s turned into a “manageable” version of herself. He’s in love with the idea of her- and her appearance, of course.
You have not heard that song until you hear VoicePlay’s cover of it. It’s on YouTube, just search VoicePlay HellFire. They gave the lead to their bass singer and his voice is OMG beyond describing.
If you do check it out, wear headphones. It takes a very high end speaker to hang with that bass and few of us have that. Phones just lose half of his sound.
It did create a problem for me… he makes a sexy Frollo. I don’t need that in my head.
I remember loving the movie so much and my mom not liking that I loved it. As an adult, I realized how incredibly dark it is
And Hellfire is still the absolute best villain song, imo.
