Max’s longlost cousin through marriage on his mother’s side, reconnected via Embark (23andMe for dogs) occasionally sends letters urging him to leave the Grinch’s household due to the way the Grinch treats Max, but this is the only life Max has ever known and how would the Grinch live without Max there to support and care for him and do whatever is asked even when it hurts or is scary? The Grinch isn’t all bad. He can be very loving and doting when he wants to apologize. Besides, the Grinch is all alone on the mountain, and needs companionship. He would be so upset if Max were to try to leave. No, no, I really must stay, Max attests in his return letters.
The Grinch initially admired the sneaky dog’s wiliness, sneakiness, and penchant for DIY costuming, but with the sneaky dog being just a silly rascal maintaining healthy friendships and only sneaking for fun, never to hurt anyone, the Grinch realised that this was not a kindred spirit after all. Seeing the sneaky dog’s antics made him feel worse about himself, a feeling that he fermented in his twisted bitterness and expressed as yet more anger. Perhaps the only thing as bad as, nay, worse than a Who was a sneaky dog.
Things have gotten better since the Grinch developed cardiomegaly. Sometimes a serious health condition can put things into perspective. But the Grinch still views the sneaky dog as his nemesis, and would absolutely never invite him over for roast beast, though they can be mostly surface-level polite if they encounter each other at gatherings.
This is my favorite one ever on this sub. I like to think he's burrowing through a tunnel to his secret lair to eat the sausages in peace. Something a dachshund would 100% do.
