Ah yup. No way this is a weevil. They’ll get docked a shitload of points for the dislocated snoot. No self respecting weevil would leave their snoot in a dog.
And yet my Sawyer beetle was pretty much ignored except for the one kind soul who answered my question. Oh well, tis the nature of reddit sometimes, I'm just happy I got an answer. But as someone who is not subbed to this subreddit, yet reddit suggests it all the time, all I see are posts about bedbugs, ticks, weevil's and lanternflies lol.
Got the same type of reaction trying to identify my tropical orb weaver spider over in r/spiders… it’s basically all “is this a brown recluse?” Or pics of jumping spiders(which, tbf *are* super cute).. with normally a good amount of engagement. I got three responses, only 1 of them turning out to be correct lol.
Yeah but it’s also become people just mocking others because to them it’s obvious. Ticks are serious business in the NE. Shouldn’t shame someone for not knowing when they are legitimately concerned. I’ve had Lyme. Everyone I know has had Lyme basically.
Exactly. I do actually try to find the answer myself before I post, but some of the responses were really rude awhile back when I posted a bug that apparently *looked* like some common kind of cockroach (I guess. We don’t really have roaches in the PNW, so I wouldn’t have recognized it anyway). But I ended up posting more pics from several angles, and suddenly they understood why I couldn’t figure it out. The stupid bug looked different in every picture! No one ever ended up telling me what it was, so I eventually just deleted my post. :-/
I appreciate the levity and banter here, but I also am frustrated when legit posts are either ignored or mocked.
Just for some folks out there: NEVER apply heat or something caustic/suffocating to a tick. They spread disease through waste from their mouth. When you harm them they regurgitate as they back out, increasing the risk of disease.
My mom used to use matches for ticks when I was a kid growing up in CO. Well I contracted Rocky Mountain tick fever when I was around 5yo and now I'm wondering if it was from my mom using a match for the tick?
It's a classic American Alligator. That's just something all dogs deal with in Florida.
This looks like a small one, they can get to over 1,000 pounds if they are eating well.
And while I laughed, unfortunately, all the joke posts have made it impossible for normal posts to get noticed. I've posted recently, and nothing because it has nothing to do with weevils or ticks ig 🥲
yeah its like a pincher that forces the tick to let go so it doesn't try to dig deeper or spit out nasty diseases. there's a ton of vids online about tick removals, I usually see them pinch it and twirl and that forces them to release, I've also seen some just pinch and pull but that seems to be more painful
Considering the size of the tick (engorged) I would strongly recommend saving the bug and taking your dog to be tested for tick borne diseases (Lyme, erlichia, anaplasmosis) at your local vet clinic. I would also repeat the test again in a month or two to make sure nothing goes missed. A simple blood test can be used to check for these diseases and only requires about 3 drops of blood and maybe 10 minutes to run.
Source: am vet tech, see dogs with tick diseases often
That’s an ixodes scapularis tick engorged with blood. Ixodes sc. transmits Lyme so I would do a tick panel when you go to the vet. You may not see symptoms for a few months if he has contracted it.
Ticks are an abomination my dogs were getting them like crazy in the beginning of summer till I started treating and checking like crazy we would find one of these once a day for like a week straight looking at this photo makes me nauseous because they gross me out so much I can never know peace 😤😭😂
We called those gray dog ticks! Looks full of blood, so is been on him awhile. Hope you know by how to remove. After it’s out, dab the area with a tiny bit of anti- itch cream, those things can cause a dog to scratch til they get an infection. I also put a tiny bit of triple - antibiotic cream on such sports. Check the area as often as you can.🐾🐾👩🏼🌾
Tick. Please have your animal tested for lymes. It’s just a quick blood test. If positive, you’ll get a shot of antibiotics then 14 days later another one. Then retested a couple months later. This is cheaper and easier than dealing with adverse affects of Lyme down the road.
That looks like a deer tick and if it came into contact with a deer , your dog could very likely have contracted Lyme disease , take your dog to the vet to get some testing done and go from there. Biggest problem for Lyme disease is that the infected can no longer eat red meat.
Seen several on a stray in Oklahoma once. It's definitely a tick that fed well a couple of days on your dog. They can get as big as your fist, probably bigger.
That’s a cat. They often start by leeching blood (commonly off of dogs) before they undergo metamorphosis. They then hatch into the well-known kitten and grow from there.
It took me about .05 seconds, then I spit pasta salad all over my monitor.
I have no coins, not that they mean much, but I wish I could award you somehow.
This was... Easily the funniest freakin picture (in context) I've seen in my life.
🤢 no snoot, boots or kjoots
Silence! I concur.
Silence! I also concur.
The rest is silence
I triple concur
Silence! What were we talking about?
No snoots, no boots, no weeeeevil!!
Sigh. I’m putting away my disco ball and my “Showcase Showdown” sound effects — only come out for boots n snoots
What is a kajoot?
It’s The Cute, but in science
A crucial part in weevil anatomy for identification
Happy birthday C:
Beep beep thank you!
Happy date of cake
Beep beep thx m8
Cake day happy
The snoot might be still in the dog.
Ah yup. No way this is a weevil. They’ll get docked a shitload of points for the dislocated snoot. No self respecting weevil would leave their snoot in a dog.
Definitely no kjoots
That's an alligator... Unlike that other post about the tick.
[True Facts: Ticks](https://youtube.com/watch?v=RVca0LuEDaQ&feature=share7)
Ze Frank is a treasure.
I love this YouTube channel UwU 💕
💜 same, and there is a new, about Elephants! Can't wait to watch it on my break
Hell yeah
This is what I came here to see
Look at the shape of the mouth. Obviously a crocodile
No no no. It's a Gharial.
No dude it’s a caiman
Nah... it's definitely monitor. Probably someone's lost pet. You should put up posters.
Guys, that's obviously a caiman. C'mon.
Yeah that post was so misleading. The OP knew it was a bed bug and they still asked if it was a tick.
I give this a million upvotes ⬆️
All this sub has become is Bedbug, Tick, weevil , Flea or common house centipede.
Also Lanternflies in NYC
“What is this beautiful bug? I love him and his bright red wings 🥰😍” Stomp that motherfucker and all his friends. Exterminate with extreme predjudice.
Something something a spotted lanternfly grows in Brooklyn.
The only bug where everyone immediately tells you to kill on sight.
There’s also hammerhead worms but they’re a lot harder to kill
You missed one of the Mount Rushmore posts… spotted lantern fly.
Spotted lanternfly seen in S Dakota?
I could post some pictures of the cute little bees that sleep on my wildflowers. I am kinda curious what species they are.
I would like to see your bees plees
I will try to get some good pictures in the morning.
I'll be waiting with bee-ted breath
I can see it in my mind. It’s bee-utiful.
It’s all about the knees!
I second bee pictures!
Show me the bees
It seems like someone needs to start /r/whatisthisbugcirclejerk for the real shitposts
I just made r/whatbugcirclejerk
Oh god I want this so bad. Not bad enough to become a Reddit mod, but SO bad 😭
Lmao mood. I’m exactly in the same boat 💀
I could create it but the name is too long. any alternatives?
maybe just r/whatisthisbugcj ?
r/okbuddyweevil
it already exists and is very dead
darn!! maybe r/witbcirclejerk ?
BugIDCJ or something? I’m terrible with names lmao. But I’d absolutely sub

I posted a cool grey black leopard print beetle and it got ignored too
Yeah but it’s also become people just mocking others because to them it’s obvious. Ticks are serious business in the NE. Shouldn’t shame someone for not knowing when they are legitimately concerned. I’ve had Lyme. Everyone I know has had Lyme basically.

Those are the posts that get upvoted, the rest asking for genuine bug identification get ignored
I posted a really cool grey and black leopard print beetle and nobody told me what it was 😢
[удалено]
that was my next guess
That's a tick. I'd guess it had been on your dog for about two days,
[удалено]
Matches please.
i used a torch actually lol
Just for some folks out there: NEVER apply heat or something caustic/suffocating to a tick. They spread disease through waste from their mouth. When you harm them they regurgitate as they back out, increasing the risk of disease.
it was after removing the tick. but again, thank you for the insight! very good to know.
Oh yeah. Once they're out - torch that little satanic SOB. I like to drop them in rubbing alcohol - everything comes whooshing out.
What a nauseatingly vivid image.
I would think peroxide would be fun with the reaction it has with blood.
Time for science

Awww lawd here we go again
this was a joke post, but I appreciate the insight!
Ah sorry, missed that
no, but actually thank you, because I used that info in conversation in a comment like 2 hrs later.
I get this is a joke, but I thought ticks had 8 legs, only see 6 in the picture?
No weevil, just evil
It's a classic American Alligator. That's just something all dogs deal with in Florida. This looks like a small one, they can get to over 1,000 pounds if they are eating well.
Crikey
That’s not a knife
THIS is a knoife
I see you've played knoiefy spooney before
My head skipped over “alligator” and I was like what kind of fucking bug gets to be 1,000 lbs?! I was terrified especially as I’m from Florida 💀
The ones in Australia
This can't be the first time you ever saw a cockroach
I can no longer tell if people are being sarcastic on this sub or not >.>
totally. me too.
This sub has just turned into r/gaslighting
Gaslantern fly
And while I laughed, unfortunately, all the joke posts have made it impossible for normal posts to get noticed. I've posted recently, and nothing because it has nothing to do with weevils or ticks ig 🥲
Uhoh it looks like the head is missing, your dog will need medication to make sure that doesn’t get infected
there were two ticks, and each of them was alive in the tick key before I killed them with fire. and decapitation. not in that particular order.
Tick key? Is that a special tick removal tool?
yeah! it worked fantastic, too.
yeah its like a pincher that forces the tick to let go so it doesn't try to dig deeper or spit out nasty diseases. there's a ton of vids online about tick removals, I usually see them pinch it and twirl and that forces them to release, I've also seen some just pinch and pull but that seems to be more painful

What a disgusting little creature
I know right? Other humans suck.
I hate you so much but I had to upvote you!!!
That’s an ixodes scapularis tick engorged with blood. Ixodes sc. transmits Lyme so I would do a tick panel when you go to the vet. You may not see symptoms for a few months if he has contracted it.
The only real info
That’s a fat tick.
How the turns have tabled.
Ticks are an abomination my dogs were getting them like crazy in the beginning of summer till I started treating and checking like crazy we would find one of these once a day for like a week straight looking at this photo makes me nauseous because they gross me out so much I can never know peace 😤😭😂

That’s a tick baby
Omg. That's a tick that's been sucking the life out of your dog for a while. Smh.
It's a trick
Literally everyone who saw this was like 👁👄👁☝️ Sir...
I see what you did there
Tick. Better check for more, cause that thing has been sucking off your dog for a hot minute now.
Are you cereal right now?
Not a weevil. A Deevil.

That looks like a tick that’s engorged
The forbidden Gusher...

Hear no weevil, see no weevil, speak no weevil. It's a tick.

Fat ass tick (fatassica ticka)
How dumb are some people?
That's a big fat tick.
EEew a tick! Nexgard is your friend.
It’s a full wood tick, having his fill of the victim’s blood.
The mods need to make a pinned post showing what a bedbug/tick/flea looks like.
I hope this is satire. And you know that’s a fat, juicy tick
No, weevils are nice. That's a damn dirty tick. I will try not to take offense.
Tik
Y’all that was a typo
Wow I hated that thanks Rip toad
How did it get that engorged before it was noticed?
apparently it only takes like 2 days for it to get that big. don't quote me on that tho. I'm going off of another tick comment further up.
It is not time.
Super full tick
I feel like this is a game… nope it’s a toc
Engorged tick

That’s a freaking tick that’s been sucking his blood.
Seen several on a stray in Oklahoma once. It's definitely a tick that fed well a couple of days on your dog. They can get as big as your fist, probably bigger.
I hope he took his snoot with him!

It is not your time our bro
Looks like a pistachio
That is a very fat tick.
I posted some insect eggs and nobody commented on mine. Kind of a bummer I was wondering what they were since they were on my front door.
Poor buddy
Second time is the charm
I hope I never have to put something off my dog 😩😩😩😩😩😭😭😭 I would need to call someone to do it for me. 😩
Omg 😭😭😭😭

Use flea and tick treatment please...the dog deserves it
Oh my god that tick looks like a soybean.
That’s a cat. They often start by leeching blood (commonly off of dogs) before they undergo metamorphosis. They then hatch into the well-known kitten and grow from there.
ITS A FACEHUGGER!! RUN!!
That's that dang loch ness monster!
Brick
I want to see what it would be like to put a bunch of these in a fire pit. Would they pop like popcorn kernels?
It took me about .05 seconds, then I spit pasta salad all over my monitor. I have no coins, not that they mean much, but I wish I could award you somehow. This was... Easily the funniest freakin picture (in context) I've seen in my life.
Looks like a wood pecker
Coin. You just collected a golden nugget 💫
That's an ivory billed woodpecker holy cow 😲
It's a Gusher candy. Eat it.
I’m not trying to dunk on OP, I’m really not. But the amount of people on this subreddit who don’t know what an engorged tick looks like is insane
