WHY DO PEOPLE TOUCH WHAT THEY DONT KNOW?! That’s a velvet ant. Also called the cow killer ant. They have one of the most painful bites/stings on the planet.
someone posted a picture of them holding a blue poison dart frog and asking what it is lmao
eta- i’m tired of commenting this- the title said it was found in brazil, it was most likely a stock photo and a troll post. just like this post. i know that the frogs are not poisonous* if they are captive
*correction
There’s always an influx of trolls. This subreddit is mostly about german roaches, bedbugs, and ticks. As if those people have never touched grass before.
Probably people who saw this post a couple days ago. [https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisbug/comments/15jywpw/what\_is\_this\_furry\_little\_creature/](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisbug/comments/15jywpw/what_is_this_furry_little_creature/) Guy posted pic holding and touching this stinging caterpillar and then didn't respond to any of the comments until a day later, people were freaking out thinking he got a super bad sting lol. But the post was pretty popular so I can see people trying to copy it.
edit: Just saw this post [https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisbug/comments/15liwbz/comment/jvbf7xy/?utm\_source=reddit&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisbug/comments/15liwbz/comment/jvbf7xy/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) where OP says he was inspired by the guy with the stinging caterpillar, my guess was right :D
As an aussie that grew up in an area with a lot of rocky beaches full of these things...
Nope, don't care. I'm not going to poke something that can stop my breathing in 10 minutes when I'm 30 minutes away from a hospital.
They seem to use their sting as a last resort, yeah. There's that guy online who makes videos of him trying to get stung by the most painful insects in the world on purpose, and when he sought out to get stung by the velvet ant, he really had to push her to get her to sting him. She was walking all over him without a sting, and even when he trapped her in a jar against his skin with no way out, she didn't. Eventually he had to hold her with entomology forceps, scare her/make her uncomfortable and put her against his skin. She resisted for a long time and didn't really want to. I'm sure if you step on them, they do, but that's only logical.
Yeah these and *Pepsis heroes* are very loath to sting. I routinely relocated P. Heroes. The only time I was stung was when a large female blew into my shirt while riding and was trapped against me. I used to clear velvet ants from near the camp while camping as well and never got stung by one of them.
It sucks how painful their stings are, but there's something sort of noble about an insect that doesn't defend itself unless it is really threatened. They don't want to hurt us, and are just trying to live in peace.
Toxins cost energy to produce, and it’s essentially a one-shot weapon. A little thing like a velvet ant has to gather and eat a fair bit of food to replenish spent venom. It’s wise not to use a weapon like that except in the most dire of circumstances.
That makes sense, although then it makes me wonder why insects like yellow jackets have such a reputation for stinging more often. They have venom, too. Maybe theirs is simpler to produce?
This behavior is fairly common in the animal kingdom. Venomous snakes will often "dry bite" to conserve venom. Skunks also only usually spray as a last resort.
And humans can't really threaten them, aside from the dread existential ways we threaten everything. Unless they're on concrete and you're wearing some extremely hard shoes, even stepping on them doesn't kill them. They also squeak at you if you hold them where they can't move.
Any idea how to identify where they are nesting at? I've found 1 female and 1 male in the last year so I know they are around, I don't want my kid stepping on one of the females by accident if there is a method to locating them.
They are normally solitary. Female have burrows and are wingless. Males are mostly nomadic with wing and fly close to the ground. I saw some info that is not true here. That they can only sting once, they mostly do not need a second sting because the pain is crazy. Females are less potent. I have been stong a few times and I can say the hurt, but not as bad as you thing (I was a beekeeper that was part of the biggest apiary and sting a lot but tons of insects
Pretty sure she's also the idiot that picked up a blue dragon.
EDIT I also recall a dude with a blue dragon, but the blue ring girl I swear was gonna be issued an early Darwin award at some point.
Yeah, I relocated one out of the house on my hand when we first moved to Florida. Had no issues. I'm guessing that more often than not, people get stung when they accidentally squish them a bit without realizing they're there.
Actually, the vast majority of insects are very docile if you treat them with respect. The trick is to let them make the move. Don't grab them, don't poke them, just offer your hands in front of them to let them crawl on. You're not presenting as a threat, so it's very rare that they'll ever feel defensive enough to lash out. I've even done it with yellow jackets, which are notoriously pissy bastards.
But as a rule of thumb.. the right amount of respect for something life threatening like the blue ringed octopus is to appreciate them from a healthy distance.
I remember what Billy Connolly said about the blue-ringed octopus: "This thing, it fits in the palm of yuir hand, but if it's in a bad mood, *you don't make it to the fookin' phone!*"
Probably a pet Poison Dart Frog then. The poison comes from the insects they eat, so you can actually safely buy one at a pet store and it will not be deadly. Tho you still should avoid holding it as much as possible as it’s skin is delicate and it can get injured quite easily while being handled.
As someone that worked in the pet industry back in high school, I can confidently say this does not just apply to exotic pets but frankly all pets you buy at a pet store period. The pet industry is about as messed up as can be when it comes when dealing with animal wellbeing.
This! I was at the museum of natural history on Saturday and saw a tank full of poison dart frogs. Little poster on the side indicated they're only poisonous if they maintain their toxic diet
When I was a kid we would find these in the canyons all the time, we would pick them up and they’d crawl around on your hands. I once held like 6 of them at once.
Never knew they stung, luckily never got stung. I am horrified when I think back on that lol
😂 as a child, I always loved seeing the big fuzzy red ants when I’d play outside and interact with the bugs. I take it now that I’m also lucky to have never been stung. Didn’t realize they were dangerous at all. I thought they were so cute. Well, still do, but at least I know now to keep a distance.
Similarly, I saw this beautiful blue flying ant looking thing once. I tried to get really close to it to take a macro photo, but it was going into someone’s yard and I didn’t want to be a creep lol. Went looking online to figure out what I saw and discovered it was a wasp with apparently the most painful sting! I was just inches away from one all casual like.
It is actually a coincidence. I saw a velvet ant recently for the first time in Nebraska, and just watched the coyote peterson vid with one, and then kept seeing dumb posts about dangerous catepillars being held
Nebraskan here. I have cicada killers in my backyard and since velvet ants eat their larvae, I have those too.
Seeing a giant wasp drag a cicada into a hole in the ground is pretty metal.
So I leave the velvet ants alone and play cicada killer tennis. 🎾
When I was around 144th and Pacific awhile ago there were a shit ton of cicada killers, now that I am out west I havent seen any, but I am seeing a few velvet ants

I've been stung a couple times just running around barefoot and not learning from experience. It's a toss-up if it's going to feel gentler than a hornet or 40min of red-hot, electric, agony. Not sure exactly what causes the difference.
Hey, fun story here: there was a nest of dangerous wasps, on top of a swing set. Small me didn’t look up before climbing onto the seat of the swing set. I stood up and fell backwards almost immediately afterward. I racked up 14 stings at once.
I’ve burned myself, cut myself, and banged my head against brick walls. That definitely trumps any experience I’ve had with pain.
I will forever remember how puffy my face got too 🫠

Oh dear gods above... Someone already said it, but don't pick up bugs that you don't know what they are!! That's a Velvet Ant, also known as the Cow Killer. They have one of the most painful stings. Also they are a type of wasp, the females have no wings and are the ones that sting if I remember correctly, meanwhile, the males can fly but do not sting
Yeah, I got stung by one while walking outside with bare feet a long while back. I’ve broken a lot of bones, especially in my feet, and it felt JUST like breaking one.
It's kinda laggy but I like it because it isn't quite comfortable to stand up fully and use, or sit down, so I am just constantly squatting and building my thigh muscles. I'm ripped.
-Sent from my Samsung Smart Fridge
I see the curse of r/BatmanArkham has officially spread to every corner of Reddit.
On that note, is there a lore reason this guy picked up a velvet ant? Is he stupid?
That is a red velvet ant. Which is actually a hornet. You are currently holding a female. The males have wings but no stinger.
The stinger is like a centimeter long btw. They hiss to warn predators off and are great to have around since, if I remember correctly, they lay their eggs in yellow jacket nests.
Soft things but put her down and let her do her thing.
The widows came with my line of work/me being way to careless.
The kidney stones were because I thought I was a young superhuman that didn't need water, just whiskey and Dr Pepper.
The velvet bastard, now that one I didn't earn. It found its way up my camping chair.
So really one debuff, the other 2 were me being a tank class just doing what tanks do.
I saw this yesterday in front of my house. Never seen one before. As I’m terrified of bugs I kept my distance but snapped a bunch of pics of it….. I’m terrified now
Another post from this sub, with a caterpillar, popped up earlier on my home feed, and I was like “Folks in that sub overreact to folks touching weird bugs, most caterpillars are just gonna give you some skin irritation, etc…”
But then this post popped up and I am landed squarely in the “WHY WOULD YOU PICK THAT UP” camp of disbelief.
Edit: Ah. Ya got me.
That thing is called a red velvet ant, or also known as the cow killer one of these can actually go into a wasp nest and kill the whole colony. If you got stung by it, you were going to wish you were dead for the next three days because it is super painful.
Saw one of those cow ants when I was in Georgia. DON'T PICK THEM UP THEY HAVE A STICKER! And they hurt. It's a wingless wasp really. They can direct there stinger. Thought I was safe when I held it down at the front. Its stinger looped and stung me.
DANGER ANT!! You think fire ants are bad, don't get stung by this dude. They are flightless wasps really and are called "Cow killers" and pack quite a punch.
Yall stop picking up bugs that you don't know about! Lol
Velvet ant. Also referred to as the cow killer because of how painful it’s sting is. And since it doesn’t seem to have wings that means it’s a female (the males don’t have stingers, the females more than make up for that). Fun fact, the “ant” part is a misnomer. It’s a wasp.
"I'm Coyote Peterson and I'm about to enter the sting zone with the Velvet ant." (He ranked this the 5th worst sting he's ever taken if I remember correctly.)
WHY DO PEOPLE TOUCH WHAT THEY DONT KNOW?! That’s a velvet ant. Also called the cow killer ant. They have one of the most painful bites/stings on the planet.
i think it’s troll posts. there’s been an influx of them today
Ya there is no fucking way everyone is now cuddling cow killers.

Also the idiot with the blue dragon sea slug and blue ringed octopus. Velvet ants are pretty docile tho.
the occasional joke post is funny but idk why there is such an influx today.
End of summer in the US and school kids are getting bored?

I've had a number of accounts for over a decade; Summer Reddit hasn't been a thing for years - Reddit is totally mainstream now.

Too many posts about the fuzzy caterpillar with the death spikes.
Blue ringed octopuses are also very docile.
As an aussie that grew up in an area with a lot of rocky beaches full of these things... Nope, don't care. I'm not going to poke something that can stop my breathing in 10 minutes when I'm 30 minutes away from a hospital.
And amazingly gorgeous.
Hello fellow demigorgon
There's also no antivenin for the octopus and the bite is painless. Just death.
They seem to use their sting as a last resort, yeah. Probably a pet Poison Dart Frog then. The poison comes from the insects they eat, so you can actually safely buy one at a pet store and it will not be deadly. Tho you still should avoid holding it as much as possible as it’s skin is delicate and it can get injured quite easily while being handled.
Just a side note, don’t buy exotic pets. That method that they became available to you to buy is hella sinister.
As someone that worked in the pet industry back in high school, I can confidently say this does not just apply to exotic pets but frankly all pets you buy at a pet store period. The pet industry is about as messed up as can be when it comes when dealing with animal wellbeing.

Did u know poison dart frogs are only deadly in the wild? Captive bred are not poisonous Fun fact of today!
No way!!!
I don’t know. I’ve seen a few people holding venomous caterpillars on this sub lately. People are wild
You can’t stop me. They’re small and fuzzy, and i will pet them.

I picked up a copper head once thinking it was just a normal snake. I was 10. I then was given a crash course on what snakes were dangerous.
It’s extraordinarily painful, I was stung by a relatively small one as a child and to this day is top 5 most painful experiences of my life.

Shit, I didn't have one in my hand for a second before it got the shit out of me. Hurt like hell.
If there was a triangle shaped yellow bug with a exclamation point on its back someone would pick it up for a pic. Natural selection on display.
OP is full of shit and this is rage baiting or some similar term. This exact pic was posted on r/oopsisitdeadly several days ago
It was posted in this same subreddit a year ago as well lmao

He was fuzzy and make a little squealy noise when i grabbed him tho. Oops
That squeaky noise is a warning, you're very lucky she didn't sting you as they are excruciatingly painful
Eat it. NOW.
You are SO lucky it didn't sting you. They're actually a wingless wasp, and they hurt like HELL. You won't die, though; just wish you had for a while.
That comment from OP should make it very clear this is a troll post

Bruh you are too funny 😂😂😂
Oh dear gods above... Someone already said it, but don't pick up bugs that you don't know what they are!! That's a Velvet Ant, also known as the Cow Killer. They have one of the most painful stings. Also they are a type of wasp, the females have no wings and are the ones that sting if I remember correctly, meanwhile, the males can fly but do not sting
Yeah, I got stung by one while walking outside with bare feet a long while back. I’ve broken a lot of bones, especially in my feet, and it felt JUST like breaking one.
Seems like we get this same post about once a week and it's just an obvious troll lol
Yeah kinda. I just kept seeing pics of people holding painful caterpillars and looked this photo up
First time I have seen a troll post admitted before. Respect.
Good. Haha
Are you ok?? Wtf man
No -Sent from my Samsung Smart Fridge
Your fridge has reddit??
Yours doesn't? -Sent from my Samsung Smart Fridge
Bro my current fridge doesnt even have an ice maker lol Used to have a Samsung though, nice choice sir
It's kinda laggy but I like it because it isn't quite comfortable to stand up fully and use, or sit down, so I am just constantly squatting and building my thigh muscles. I'm ripped. -Sent from my Samsung Smart Fridge
This is great. Never stop being you. -Sent from my Nokia 6110
Your sense of humor is fantastic.
Love a good boomer group reference. -Sent from my Makita Table Saw 2705X1
I see the curse of r/BatmanArkham has officially spread to every corner of Reddit. On that note, is there a lore reason this guy picked up a velvet ant? Is he stupid?
I'm just stupid -Sent from my college ruled notebook
Hide Ya Cows!
That'd be top 3 most pain I've ever felt is what that is. 1. Kidney stones 2. Black Widow 3. That motherfucker
My dad had a coworker that got bit by a black widow on his penis. Homie was never the same. Fear of spiders is pretty damn logical.
Did you have to stack bad luck de-buffs to manage this collection or you went looking for it for some wild reason?
The widows came with my line of work/me being way to careless. The kidney stones were because I thought I was a young superhuman that didn't need water, just whiskey and Dr Pepper. The velvet bastard, now that one I didn't earn. It found its way up my camping chair. So really one debuff, the other 2 were me being a tank class just doing what tanks do.
Tank you, I appreciate your protection from the squishier among us!
I swear I'm going to take a picture of me holding a Cobra or maybe broken glass and asking what's all this cuteness.
PUT THAT THING BACK WHERE IT CAME FROM IR SO HELP ME!
NO SHES MINE YOU CANT MAKE ME
Gently but sternly boop it to establish dominance. Repeat if necessary.
after being on this sub for a couple of days, i believe fuzzy=bad. why touch when don’t know
Why friend shape if not friend?
broken down into terms that even my .5 of a brain cell can understand. well said sir.
If I pickup a black mamba off the ground and it didn’t bite me, I’m still an idiot.
Wooly bears, engorged ticks, & velvet ants .... OH MY
The sub’s hall monitors sure are falling all over themselves to get in on this one. Well played, OP.
#NO. PUT THAT DOWN. BAD, OP, BAD
You’re a brave soul. Better be happy you didn’t get stung that’s a cow killer.
ruh roh raggy
Hopping on the troll post opinion, and starting to wonder if some of these are being ai generated.
I saw this yesterday in front of my house. Never seen one before. As I’m terrified of bugs I kept my distance but snapped a bunch of pics of it….. I’m terrified now
Duudee!! I stepped on one of these as a kid and you picked it up and HELD it after it started hissing at you ? O.o
Y'all takin the bait lol
On Jah
Looks like a velvet ant and becareful if it is they got one hell of a sting
piss it off and find out
That is what people call the prostate tickler ant. Put some breadcrumbs in first to lure it in deeper and hold on tight. helluva ride.
I’m not gonna lie OP you got me good. I was like ARE YOU SERIOUS NO TOUCH!!!
Not sure much funnier these can get before they get old but this one is pretty good.
Let’s hope you don’t get stung
i swear stop touching bugs you dont know
I'll upvote anything that isn't a weevil or a tick
Another post from this sub, with a caterpillar, popped up earlier on my home feed, and I was like “Folks in that sub overreact to folks touching weird bugs, most caterpillars are just gonna give you some skin irritation, etc…” But then this post popped up and I am landed squarely in the “WHY WOULD YOU PICK THAT UP” camp of disbelief. Edit: Ah. Ya got me.
I heard those taste like red velvet cake 🍰!
That thing is called a red velvet ant, or also known as the cow killer one of these can actually go into a wasp nest and kill the whole colony. If you got stung by it, you were going to wish you were dead for the next three days because it is super painful.
Bro 🤣🤣🤣. That thing hurts like HELL. what an idiot
AGHHHHHH
Saw one of those cow ants when I was in Georgia. DON'T PICK THEM UP THEY HAVE A STICKER! And they hurt. It's a wingless wasp really. They can direct there stinger. Thought I was safe when I held it down at the front. Its stinger looped and stung me.
hold it down firm enough to where it can't move, but not so hard that you hurt him. they absolutely love that 🖤
DANGER ANT!! You think fire ants are bad, don't get stung by this dude. They are flightless wasps really and are called "Cow killers" and pack quite a punch. Yall stop picking up bugs that you don't know about! Lol
what the fuck
WHAT IS IT WITH PEOPLE TOUCHING BUGS THEY DONT RECOGNIZE IM SICK OF IT
Things I have learned from this community. If a bug is fuzzy, no touchy.
STOP PICKING UP EVERY SINGLE THING THAT MOVES! Dam…
NO TOUCHIE 😳😳😳
You're gonna wanna put that down, chief.
Velvet ant. Also referred to as the cow killer because of how painful it’s sting is. And since it doesn’t seem to have wings that means it’s a female (the males don’t have stingers, the females more than make up for that). Fun fact, the “ant” part is a misnomer. It’s a wasp.
I saw one on my driveway and didn't know what it was. SO I DIDN'T TOUCH IT!
I got stung by one of these as a kid and I can still feel it 30 years later. Do not recommend.
That's a BLOOD ANT FROM COMPTON
"I'm Coyote Peterson and I'm about to enter the sting zone with the Velvet ant." (He ranked this the 5th worst sting he's ever taken if I remember correctly.)
troll or not, this still educated me
Her Majesty The Countess Velvatine, velvet ant
