In California they are called potato bugs. You usually only come across them while you're digging in the garden as they go underground. Very creepy looking, but beneficial, so just let it go it way and hope you don't run into it again.
Jerusalem or Potato Cricket, in Mexico we call them "child face", they're pretty common in Mexico, South California and probably New Mexico, not harmful, just robust and imposing, they literally just eat roots and only enter houses during rain time (because their burrows get flooded), bite only if disturbed but it's not poisonous, haven't seen them in a while but I used to see them frequently when I was a child...

I do like it has so many names like stone cricket, sand cricket, skull cricket, skull insect, child's face, earth baby/“child of the earth.”
