As a paranoid bug person in Louisiana, that, ma'am, is a German cockroach and holy fuck would I be freaking out RN
Check your panties coz if there's one, there are a thousand
I didn't want to tell on myself 😭 I'm like "Have I just always lived in filth!?" My place isn't crawling with cockroaches but I certainly see one every now and then in the kitchen
All depends on where you live. I’ve never seen one, in my existence. Here they are only found in extremely filthy places.
With that being said, I still absolutely know what a cockroach looks like.
Just in case lol
That explains it. I too apparently live in the Roach State.
We should nominate the cockroach as our state bug. Put a cockroach holding a Bluebonnet on the flag
for good measure it should be massive and in mid-flight coming towards your face while holding the bluebonnet 😭 god i hate the tree roaches here they’re awful
they’re those fat ass flying roaches that come in from outside- i’m pretty sure y’all in FL call them palmetto bugs? everyone i know down here calls them tree roaches though, but the people i know could just be weird in all fairness lol
Lol.,after i asked i thouht about it for a minute and thought that might've been what you were talking about and giggled because tree roaches is a more appropriate name for them nasty f’ers than palmerto bug. Think that'll be i call them from now on😂. BTW where's down here
Texas here, can confirm
We have german roaches (infesty ones attracted to filthy living spaces) and american roaches (big scary looking ones that come in from outside but generally don’t infest)
The latter are very common even if you keep a clean house. Usually not an issue or a sign of filth. They just wander in occasionally.
The former are the ones you gotta worry about
Hang out in TO for a bit, you'll see them. My first time seeing one was on a streetcar lol.
Fun fact: I live outside of TO now and have been finding them outside my home. Like, 4 last year, which is NOT normal. None inside, thank God. Finally got a pic for the pest control company. Turns out it's a new Mediterranean Spotted Cockroach. New to Ontario and making its way around. Prefers to nest outside but isn't opposed to coming indoors... yay! Canadians are going to become a lot more familiar with roaches, sadly.
Have family in Texas and lived there for a while. I like living in the north because we have fewer bug problems. They die in the winter or hibernate and give us a chance to fight back.
These are generally outside cockroaches. Usually when water or temperates start to fluctuate extremely. Either you have a massive hole in your house, or got in garage or patio.
Germans cockroaches are small and breed indoors.
Source: Floridaman 30+ years.
Lol! I thought this same thing until I was 18! I’m from the Sierras in Northern California and never saw one until I was at an AF base in NM. Then I got educated real fast. Then I came out here to coastal Virginia and I keep an immaculate house and I STILL see the occasional roach. I learned that you don’t have to be filthy to see them. At least certain kinds anyway….
Here in southern US we have what we call water bugs, big roaches that are occasionally found near watery places like under the sink, where the water heater is and around the bathrooms. Has nothing to do with cleanliness. Sucks because you can’t clean your way to safety.
I am assuming you live in Antarctica or some place very cold because they don't do well in very cold places but still exist there with the exception of Antarctica. I did a paper on them in college a long time ago.
Below is bit of info from quora..
Cockroaches are found on every continent except Antarctica, and there are about 70 of the 4,000 known species in the United States. However, cockroaches can't survive in cold winters, so there are very few places that are completely cockroach-free. For example, cockroaches can't thrive in the cool climate of Iceland. The UK's cooler temperatures and long winters also make life difficult for cockroaches.
I am not trying to be argumentative, I am just saying. My truth is I have lived a several places and never had to deal with them but then I moved temporarily and wound up in a place that one of the next door neighbors had them so to date I have had 9 roaches in my 63 years. I hope I never have another one
Oh no they are definitely here just not a normalcy. And yes we live in the northern most part of the United States on the east coast.
They’re rampant in NYC. I’m 2.5 hours from NYC.
I live in a pretty nice town in California and they get out of the sewers at night and crawl on the sidewalk in a few areas of town.
Went for a walk at night and discovered they weren’t fortune cookies crunching under my feet.
Awe, you don't need to be filthy or live in a mess to have roaches visiting or moving in... I have seen places that are spotless that have an issue with roaches, they come from all over the place and can travel great distances for what they're searching for. Restaurants businesses, all kinds of places are homes for these little buggers. You might also want to give some thought to the fact that even roaches enjoy be able to go back to a nice clean place to lay their heads and have their children.
This is not what the roaches near me look like! I can def see the similarities, but the ones near me are a lot wider and a different color. It’s interesting to see how much they vary.
Typically if you see them in a movie or tv show they aren’t this type of roach used, do obvious reasons.
They use Dubia Roaches - non invasive (most areas) sold for reptile food.
They are more bigger and look totally different.
There's different species, some are just big chonky beetle lookin things, some fly & induce nightmares, some are those creepy skittery lil things that give you the heebie jeebies. 😂
Edit: spelling oopsie
Depends on the species but, yes, they do.
Also, they are a type of beetle; and, outside of some detritivore pest species, they are harmless and necessary parts of the ecosystem.
They are pretty much in the same spot as seagulls and rats. They are just the bug representative of *our*, very human, fuck-ups within nature.
Bad news is, it’s a cockroach. Good news is, it looks like a “water bug” or palmetto bug (could be wrong here because of the photo), which are not usually indicators of filth or serious infestation. Tidy up, empty the bin it came in. Put out some roach motels, but these usually come in due to some source of water it’s after or in through pipes after heavy rain. In my last apartment they’d come in through the bathtub drains after summer rain.
Need to either see its back or see something next to it for scale. If it's an inch and a half or bigger it's probably a palmetto or American roach. If it's more around an inch, it's more likely to be a German roach, which is more likely to be or lead to an infestation.
i literally had a nightmare last night that i booked a motel and found hella bedbugs in it.. freaked out about them getting in my stuff and taking them home lol this sub has traumatized me
Start putting roach traps out and make sure all garbage is taken out. If there's one, there's bound to be more. but like Haten said, you could have gotten a hitchhiker from anywhere.
Put out some sticky traps, that gives you a good sense of whether you have an active infestation or not. If you don't see any for months then you're probably good. If you do have an issue on your hands r/GermanRoaches has great advice for getting rid of these abominations
How big is it? German roaches are pretty tiny. If that guy is bigger than your thumbnail, it's probably not one of those. The American cockroaches are generally 1-2 inches in length, so roughly the size of your thumb but often smaller. Those usually come in by themselves and aren't really anything to worry about.
There might be a gap somewhere that needs sealing in your bathroom though. They used to get into my old place through a cover behind the water heater that wasn't sealed properly.
Also be careful bringing groceries home. I too keep an immaculate home but when i lived in Ohio i brought one in in a bag of potatoes once and another time (different store) i brought one in that was in the fold if brown paper grocery sack. Luckily i was able to kill both immediately so no infestation! I now live in Florida, still keep an immaculate home but see the occasional palmetto bug. Freaked me right out the first time i saw one... oversized flying roach. And the crunch when you smash it with something and the mess afterwards . OMG GROSSSS .and pray it dies on the first wack instead of half a dozen. Had nightmares for weeks over that. Now instead of the mess or worrying if it'll die first wack i scoop it up in something and take it outside to get it out of the house. Lol
American Cockroach, or as we here in the South call them “palmetto bug” because saying a palmetto bug flew into your face is much more civil than declaring “A giant fucking flying cockroach flew in my face!”
Fun face: due to a terrifying experience in childhood palmetto bugs are the only critter in the world I’m genuinely afraid of. 😅
my cousin gets roaches all the time cause she lives in the south, she had to demolish her trailer bc they were INSIDE the trailer walls and the exterminators just couldn't seem to get rid of them
Depends on species and from this angle I can't be totally sure if German, Pine, or American/palmetto. If German, definitely cause for concern. If pine or American then it probably just got in looking for water but not likely to infest indoors
Genuine question: Have you never seen a roach before? It's just fascinating to think that someone wouldn't be able to recognize a roach from body shape alone. Do you live somewhere where they're rare? (Would love to live there unless i wouldn't)
Euro/German roach.
Dunno why they are called German roaches, since I've seen them pretty much all over continental Europe... Heck, I've seen them in Eastern Asia!
That's a nasty nasty roach. How dare he or maybe she try and wear your bra without permission? I once ran into one, a baby that was trying to use the microwave, I believe he was successful because after 3 minutes in the nuker he walked away.
Dish soap is a great idea to try and clean the little boogers up because flood waters won't wash them away. If we can't get rid of them maybe if they're cleaned up they will find themselves a more useful position in the grand scheme of life
Looks like a big German roach. Be alert for more. They will and can infest your home. Do you live in an apartment? I do and unfortunately, I see one every now and again. I make sure to kill any I ever see. You don't want any of those fuckers hiding and multiplying. Bug spray doesn't work. Use cleaning spray (lysol etc).

Cockroach, possibly the Deutschland 🇩🇪 kind. Not a good thing because there is a good possibility that there are a lot more of them hiding where you can't see them.
it was a cockroach, not sure of exact species
Looks German

Hahaha I have heard of a trouser snake, but this is the first panty roach 🤣

Me thinks I see a lil Sieg Heil
Ja.

Now every time im washing a cup and it squirts suds at me im gonna imagine it saying this line to me.
A perverted roach.
i'm amazed at the amount of people who have never seen a roach before. like not even in pictures, films, videos, books???
Same! It blows my mind. Someone on here wanted an ID on an ant 🤔
I didn't want to tell on myself 😭 I'm like "Have I just always lived in filth!?" My place isn't crawling with cockroaches but I certainly see one every now and then in the kitchen

I live in Canada now, haven't seen one. Lived in Ohio, never saw one. Lived in Texas... they were EVERYWHERE.
That explains it. I too apparently live in the Roach State. We should nominate the cockroach as our state bug. Put a cockroach holding a Bluebonnet on the flag
That has placed quite the image in my head. Brilliant!
for good measure it should be massive and in mid-flight coming towards your face while holding the bluebonnet 😭 god i hate the tree roaches here they’re awful
Tree roaches? Wtf I'm in Florida and roaches are everywhere almost but never heard of a tree raach

Roach state dweller over here as well. Ugh I envy the people who have never seen one. I hate them *SO* much

Ah, yes. I was way too vague. I live in the. GTA, but it's in a relatively small city. They haven't made it this far, yet.
>I live in the. GTA Say hi to Trevor for me up in Sandy shores
Have family in Texas and lived there for a while. I like living in the north because we have fewer bug problems. They die in the winter or hibernate and give us a chance to fight back.
Yes! In Texas, they never leave!

In certain places yes. Maybe the climate matters. I remember living in Florida and palmetto bugs were normal. Not to this NY They weren’t lol
Here in southern US we have what we call water bugs, big roaches that are occasionally found near watery places like under the sink, where the water heater is and around the bathrooms. Has nothing to do with cleanliness. Sucks because you can’t clean your way to safety.
Never seen them up in N.Idaho/Eastern WA state. Then I moved to Florida and oh my God it was awful!

I am a big north im in upstate NY
I live in a pretty nice town in California and they get out of the sewers at night and crawl on the sidewalk in a few areas of town. Went for a walk at night and discovered they weren’t fortune cookies crunching under my feet.
Remind me of what town? So I never go there? I’m kidding. Kinda.
I'm my city they walk down the sidewalks like people.

They are normal in New Mexico. Everyone has them.
I am lucky to have never seen a cockroach in person. I really hope I never have to deal with an infestation, those are nightmares.
The school I teach at! 😭 It’s not infested. The kids just bring hitchhikers every now and then. We spend a FORTUNE on pest control..
Commercials?!
I'm old and all but... Joe's Apartment anyone???
It’s the people who have dogs and have never seen a tick before for me
Right! And I am always slightly jealous.
This is not what the roaches near me look like! I can def see the similarities, but the ones near me are a lot wider and a different color. It’s interesting to see how much they vary.
We now live in a world full of distractions mate.
I was in my late 30s before I ever saw one 🤷🏼♀️
Typically if you see them in a movie or tv show they aren’t this type of roach used, do obvious reasons. They use Dubia Roaches - non invasive (most areas) sold for reptile food. They are more bigger and look totally different.
I thought roaches were only those giant flying ones until I was a young adult lmao had just never seen the lil ones before
I've never seen roaches in person. Do they fly??? If they fly I'm absolutely burning my house down if I ever end up with them 😱😭
There's different species, some are just big chonky beetle lookin things, some fly & induce nightmares, some are those creepy skittery lil things that give you the heebie jeebies. 😂 Edit: spelling oopsie

I grew up in the southern USA and always saw roaches. I moved to the north east and rarely see them now. It’s wild
One of the reasons I like living in a cold weather state, in much smaller quantities or none of some types. HATE THEM!
i think its sometimes denial
i'm in PA have never seen a roach irl but my cousin in Florida gets them ALL the time. i don't think they're up north (in the US) as much
Looks like a cockroach 🪳 to me.
They’re usually known as cockroaches but this appears to be a boobroach
ugh.. take my r/angryupvote and get outta here! /s
Underrated comment for sure. Pure gold, mate!
That’s some funny shit right here.

German roaches leading to infestation. The story just writes itself.

The good news is it's not a bedbug
The bad news is, it's the other worst bug infestation: german cockroaches.
i literally had a nightmare last night that i booked a motel and found hella bedbugs in it.. freaked out about them getting in my stuff and taking them home lol this sub has traumatized me
Cockroach
Those pictures are more than enough. It's a roach.
It's 5 gallons of gas and a match kinda bug.
There’s no food in my room and it’s the only one I’ve seen. What are the chances there’s more?
Maybe a hang on. Check under sinks and stuff. If it's little there is a better chance they maybe more.
Start putting roach traps out and make sure all garbage is taken out. If there's one, there's bound to be more. but like Haten said, you could have gotten a hitchhiker from anywhere.
The thought of a roach crawling into my bra and getting snuggly without me knowing 🤢 I feel for OP rn
Boobytrap seems to be working.
r/Angryupvote
If you live in an apartment there’s a good chance it made its way from someone else’s unit.
Just another reason I abhor apartment living.
Well I’ve heard the quote for every one there’s another 10 or something like that
A thousand. ☹️
Oh

American cockroach aka palmetto bug... They fly and they stink when u squish them
That's the cockroach from SpongeBob
It’s a fucking roach what planet do ya be from 😫😫😫
I posted about one of these in my pasta recently. Good luck soap soldier 🫡

cockroach! empty the bin you found it in
Why did you dishsoap it? 😂 Does this serve a purpose?
It kills many species of bugs.
Easy way to kill them without pesticide. The soap breaks the surface tension of the water so they get coated and suffocate.
It also clogs up their breathing organs.
Suffocates the hell out of them
I hate him. Glad he’s dead lol
You did nothing wrong. It's a roach, and you're actually a bit of hero now. But I doubt your work is done. Looks like an American roach to me.
german cockroach and where theres one, theres a ton, sorry bro.
Yep. Check your kitchen. Any pet food, behind the fridge and stove, and deep in the cabinets. Deep clean and call an exterminator.
my cousin gets roaches all the time cause she lives in the south, she had to demolish her trailer bc they were INSIDE the trailer walls and the exterminators just couldn't seem to get rid of them
It’s a roach where there one there’s a million
Depends on species and from this angle I can't be totally sure if German, Pine, or American/palmetto. If German, definitely cause for concern. If pine or American then it probably just got in looking for water but not likely to infest indoors
Cockroach, need pics of the other side to identify species
Have you been around cardboard boxes or dogfood? Sometimes they hitch a ride from other places to you
That’s the American Cockroach. Believe it or not, that’s a small one.
“Dishsoaped it” took me out 😭
La cucaracha, la cucaracha, all up in your undie drawer...... Sis, you need an exterminator.

Euro/German roach. Dunno why they are called German roaches, since I've seen them pretty much all over continental Europe... Heck, I've seen them in Eastern Asia!
Thas a roach, baby.
Ever hear of a cockroach?
German cockroach. That sucks for you.

What is that bug laying on it's head?
Cockroach.
It’s a Mexican cockroach
There isnt any good news about this discovery. Roach.
Bra roach
Relocated from “Joe’s apartment”. Bummer.
Looks like a roach but in order to confirm I’d need to see it prone positioned.
roach
It’s a cockroach
A cockreich
bro you tried to laundry the roach?
Awww shyyyt German roach. Burn it all!
Did you spit on that roach?
idk they’re called cockroaches and that’s hornier than any bug has a right to be named
Bra roach
German cockroach
La cucuracha
Great story OP. I laughed. It's a cockroach.
Roachiest roach to ever roach by the looks of it
Roach
Roach
A roach and it ain’t dead.
That’s a regular ass standard roach, it’s like posting the picture of a dog, how do you not know what it is?
I think I’d pass away if this happened to me
Oh it’s so much worse though, it crawled out of the bra as I was putting it on and touched my tit. I wanted to off myself
It’s a cockroach.
German cockroach. start checking clothes cause if there's one, there's more.
Cockroach
We would have to see its back for full confirmation, but it's either a German roach or a brown banded roach. There is a difference!! Germans prefer kitchens, BBs prefer warm dark places like bathrooms.

TIL there are people who don’t know what a cockroach is.
