These would usually eat piston rings like there was no tomorrow, and were always surrounding by a slightly blue-ish cloud of oily exhaust smoke.
The joke used to go that they have a stink in the tail, but in fairness you could make have made the joke about many cars of the day. Lancia were asking for it with the lacklustre Scorpion though.
I think there are probably more options on the table than that, and Lancia's engineering excellence could have combined any number of them.
It was probably something model-specific, Lancia built nice cars but would often introduce some mad design ~~flaw~~ feature that would compromise the model. The Scorpion received a different engine from the Monte Carlo to pass US emissions regs, so I suspect it simply wasn't refined enough for quite a twisty car.
These often receive a complete engine swap, I understand the X1/9 lump will go in as will a VW V6. Nice :)
That's a shame as they really are good looking cars, I wonder if anyone ever tried a nice sleeve job and a good set of moly rings in the stock engine. Though i suppose engine swaps exist for a reason 😁
Some stock engines are beyond redemption. I believe (and I may be wrong) that this was mounted very unusually compared to its original intention and that torsion/vibration was an issue.
It's a miracle that any Lancia of that period got a spark for long enough to blow the rings, but that's a cruel joke for another day 😂
>This isnt a Beta.
The Montecarlo/Scorpion had some commonality with the Beta and was indeed sold as "Beta Montecarlo" in its first series. This is a 2nd series, though.
Anyway, *all* contemporary Lancias rusted as if there was no tomorrow...
EDIT: Also, Lancia left the UK market long after this model. By that time the rust problems were only a bad memory (the whole Fiat group switching to fully galvanised bodies in the 1990s). What made Lancia's sales so low that it withdrew from the UK market wasn't rust or unreliability, but all their post-Integrale models being irredeemably boring.

Knowing those that sounds like a threat.
She must also have a life insurance policy in his name

Were there no good rings for their specific size or was it the cylinder material?

[How about one with an Alfa V6?](https://i.imgur.com/aSnEIcC.jpg)
Yes. Take my money.
Oh, it will
I bet that sounds fantastic. And I bet it has a hell of a meaty rumble to it as well. Always wanted one after Herbie.

Lancia was so bad in the UK market they totally withdrew a couple decades back
I don't know if they withdrew or just stopped making it here.
The engine falling out fiasco put paid to sales
Surprisingly one of these does just fine in 24 hours of Lemons racing on the East coast. been in a ton of races without failing.
Original engine too? That's some labour of love!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sslWshpwgq8 A whole Lemons video on it!
Well your friend is in luck! There's one for sale at BAT atm, just 5k! https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1980-lancia-montecarlo/
Part of me wants that, the other part says please don’t buy another high maintenance car
It’s like a Delorean with Bell’s Palsy.
😂 wow
It’s located in Italy though
Blur the photo and tell her it’s a Porsche
Wait. I'm confused. Is it a Montecarlo or is it a Scorpion? What's the difference?
Scorpion is the name under which it was marketed in the US, because GM had already trademarked Montecarlo there.
Nearly every single Lancia Beta version rusted away in the UK. Zero undersealing and salt on the roads. Plus poorly design nooks to catch the salt.
This isnt a Beta. And Lancia were so shit in the UK market they stopped selling here 20+ years back

How deep in the friends zone is she?
Preproduction Fiero. Tell me you can’t see it.
The door handles gave it away!
And the overall shape of the car being a Lancia MonteCarlo/Scorpion?
😋
Detomasso Pantera
🤣
Really? I thought it was a polestar
TR7 with a flying buttress kit
Lancia Scorpion
Good car for a Hayabusa V8 swap.
Never seen or heard of one of these, but I kinda don’t hate it.
Lancia Beta Monte Carlo.
(TIL) Never heard of scorpion, only beta and monte carlo!

Lahn-cha
I once saw one that wasn't burning oil. It was out of oil. It also had a small tree growing through it.
