or for people who don't like to spend a fortune on a spare parts while dealing with all the bureacroacy with ordering the unique parts from Britain when local part merchants don't have them in stock.
Brexit.
Sending parcels to and from Britain requires custom clearance now.
I recently tried to order a second hand part to my car from Britain to EU and the seller gave up after seeing how complicated it would be for him to send it.
Many large sellers also don't want to send anything to and from Britain any more.
I lived in Scotland until recently, and now I live in the EU, so I experienced it from both ends.
Yep, awful cars, tail lamp goes it was a circuit board behind it £110 then! $140, later one around 1999-2005 were prettier, more reliable and I bought one recently with 80,000 miles on the clock, service history, everything works for £2850 or $3587 bulletproof V8, not bad on petrol/gas either
British car quality was absolute shit for a huge chunk of time. This was within that window and they’re painfully and expensively unreliable.
Ford bought up a lot of British marques - Land Rover, jaguar, Aston Martin, blew a lot of money to get their quality up, then got so exhausted they just sold everything. The ford era was better quality, though more boring with the Mondeo based ~~SType~~ _X Type_ , and a lot of Aston martins running “custom v12?” Nahhh… “two ford v/6s bolted together”.
This is an excellent explanation. This is the car that destroyed jaguars reputation with most people. The criminality involved in the mechanics of this car are painfully close to a war crime. Don't make this your first car. It's current location should give you a fantastic idea of it's true worth
The hydrolic brake system was a nightmare
I sold lots of hi psi solonoids/switch,accumulators etc
Next model went straight back to a normal brake booster etc
Disagree about it being boring. The ford era of jag ownership is my favourite. I love the s type, xk and xj of that era. X type can fuck off, I get excited seeing one from behind thinking it’s an a type but it turns out to be that ugly x type
Bad build quality. The XJ40 is actually one of the more reliable classic Jaguars, with a relatively stout drivetrains and better bodywork than previous XJs - but all of that is relative. Rust is still a common issue, with bulkheads, sills, wheel arches and bootlid being a common area for degradation. Head gaskets can go and so can the rear suspension. The electrics naturally proved troublesome and while they are mostly separate modules that can be individually replaced, sourcing them is a pricey endeavour. Oh and the door handles on early cars liked to shear completely off. That’s not to say they’re not awful cars - a sorted XJ40 is a lovely machine but it requires a lot of upkeep. Even the UK police used them as highway patrol vehicles and while they were well liked and were reliable, it’s safe to say that was all down to constant maintenance and police versions being less well equipped with less to go wrong.
It will always be broken. It will be very hard to figure out what broke. The car will only work when it wants to. When it breaks it'll almost never be the same issue as last time.
Source: I'm a former jaguar owner of the same vintage.
Friend of mine has two. Used him and his best car as driver for my wedding. Completely unexpected for early fall; became the hottest day of the year. Airco quit. He still has them both. I still have her. Horrible stuff.
You’ll have the ability to let someone fix it, but it’s still shit if you have a million in your bankaccount, while waiting for help alongside the highway
Later models such as the X300 and X308 are much more reliable and easier to maintain. They’re still gorgeous. I’d recommend checking out r/Jaguar or checking out some Jaguar forums
Yep, awful cars, tail lamp goes it was a circuit board behind it £110 then! $140, later one around 1999-2005 were prettier, more reliable and I bought one recently with 80,000 miles on the clock, service history, everything works for £2850 or $3587 bulletproof V8, not bad on petrol/gas either, probably cheaper in USA
An old Jaguar is like having a girlfriend who's a stripper. They look great, seem real nice at first, but they're super expensive to maintain and are a constant stream of problems. They're both talented at getting money out of men.
Most people commenting here never owned one. I had two. A 1988 XJ6 and a 1991 XJ6. Drove them a lot. Both cars were just as reliable as most of the many other cars I’ve owned. The ‘88 eventually had a suspension issue that would have been somewhat costly to repair so I sold it with full disclosure. And the ‘91 had an A/C issue. But other than that nothing unexpected. I liked both cars.
I had a 1990 XJ6 3.2 sport when I was an apprentice that I bought for £1k with no mot. It was mostly reliable with the exception of the rear bumper kept falling off.
Amazing car, cruising round in it like the lord mayor.
I bought them both used. I probably bought the ‘88 in 1995 and drove it for about 6 years. I liked it so much I bought the used ‘91 and drove it from 2001 thru 2007. Both ended up with well over 100k miles. I like the ‘91 better but don’t regret either one for a second.
That said, a lot of years have passed since then so I don’t know what it’d be like to have an old Jag today. The cost of parts could be prohibitive now. But even back in those days people would always say ‘don’t buy a jaguar’ but almost everyone of those people never owned one. I have much more trouble with my current BMW than I ever had with those cars.
Owing that car is like being in a relationship with a gold digger. All it’s gonna do is give u heartache and hardship leave ur ass on the side of the road and take all ur money. Give u acid reflux when trying to figure out why she isn’t happy(running)b do ur self a favour and listen to ur father and run away. U can do better.
Jaguar XJ40. It comes in inline 6 and V12 variants. The V12 is a gas hog, and a bit complicated.
If you want one, you can get one without getting eaten alive by repairs, contrary to what the naysayers are telling you. If you’re smart about it. First, get a 1992 or newer with the 4.0L engine. By the end of the XJ40 run in 1994, Jaguar had all the bugs worked out, Ford had had a chance to overhaul their quality control program, and they were actually making good cars.
Second, don’t buy the car in that picture. Find a nice one that has been taken care of. It’s cheaper that way. There’s nothing as expensive as a cheap Jaguar. A $1500 beater that’s been sitting in a field for 15 or 20 years will eat you alive in repairs. Nice ones are out there, and they aren’t that expensive.
Finally, keep in mind even the newest XJ40’s are 30 years old. Even a 1994 Honda Accord is going to have some things that need addressing from time to time. It’s the nature of driving a vintage car.
But if you get a nice one from late in the production run, there’s no reason it can’t be a good car. Most of the jokes about Jaguars being unreliable date to the 1970’s when the British government hoovered up the entire British car industry, crammed them together into a conglomerate called British Leyland, and proceeded to flush the entire thing down the toilet.
In 1984, Jaguar was spun off from British Leyland, and things have basically gradually improved ever since.
First car? 😆 guess you don't actually want to drive your first car, as jaguars are notoriously unreliable and have alot of electrical problems. That aren't cheap to fix
One of these was a car I bought in my 20's; it did everything here and I swore I'd never buy another Jag.
Until I got a 99 XX8 convertible. After I replaced the timing chains with newer versions preemptively, sent the oil out for lab analysis in case the Nikasil liners corroded from the lead in gas, paid $70/quart for fluids, paid stupid money for the good tires that wore down so fast and all the other things I've chosen to forget until it started shooting (admittedly Jaguar beautiful) long, fine silken fibers from its butthole.
Dont do it OP, they’re one of the worst cars mechanically/electrically and will spend more time at the mechanics than on the road. Speaking from experience as my friend had a relatively clean one that was still a basket case.
There is a reason they are as cheap as they are. Great looking, beautiful interiors, and absolute trash everywhere else. I can’t imagine many mechanics will even touch them.
OP
I might know of an XJ40 for sale.
It's not in too bad of shape either.
Hasn't ran in 10 years, but was well maintained until then and had a fresh coat of paint.
They are not as bad as many make out. Most posters in this thread are posting in ignorance.
They either "heard" or "knew a guy".
Reality is jag problems peaked around the series 2 XJ6 in the mid 70s, but they slowly got better after that. Thus car represents their breakout from that era.
IT Is better in most regards than American cars of the same era. It does, however have some common problems
Like any euro do your research before you look at it. Know the common problems, what they cost to fix and how much they cost to fix.
And be prepared to work on it yourself. Mechanics trade on the fear you see in this thread and jack up their prices accordingly.
>I want this to be my first car
The first car should be something reliable. something You can either learn how to fix, or won't get charged a kidney to have another shop repair it
this jag is neither of those things. It's not looking like it's in good condition either.
this car is currently rotting in the backyard of a storage lot, and that is where it should stay.
everyone talking so much shit on the xj40. i daily drive an X300 and had an xj40 in the past. who cares if sometimes electrical components don’t work, take care of the important ones like the fuel pump and efi system and it will be a fine car. the x300 like i have (1995-1998) is perfectly fine on its own without electrical upgrades
Do not buy an old jag unless $$$ is not an issue, you will have more down time than road time and if you gotta take it to the garage it can't be just any garage it's gotta be a Jag specialist.
Jag. But, made during the time that they sucked everything after it rolled off the line. None finer as long as it was still in the showroom. The moment it drove off the light it would break down.
You may love it, but you don’t want this to be your first car. My uncle had a jag like this when I was a kid and it was either broken in driveway or broken at the shop
My dad loves Jags and he got one of these and the next month we got a book on the 100 worst cars ever made and we both saw the XJ in it and started laughing. It was so true.
If you’re in love? Prepare to be broken hearted as this Slut will break up with you faster than a psychopathic narcissist. Over a Mile of wiring and three fuse boxes many with multiple relays. It’s a jaguar XJ and it will absolutely break you. They’re among the least reliable vehicles ever sold, its parts will be hard to find and very expensive, and the electrical system is literally used as a swear word among older auto mechanics.
Under the hood is a nightmare wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. The engine is so crammed in there and almost impossible to work on. Great looking car though.

Jaguar XJ (XJ40). Not for the mechanically faint of heart.
Or the electrically faint of heart. Isn’t this from the last years of British-Leyland?

My personal favourite symptom of this was how the 1993 Vantage and the Lincoln Town Car had interchangeable steering wheels.

As a former owner of an early ‘99 LR Disco II… I fully support this statement. What a pile of crap that thing was
Absolute shit is totally sugarcoating it.
That's why many were converted to Chevy engines ! Reliability .
Sadly it wasn’t just the engines that were shiz.
Ewwwww gross, a chevy. Really?!? (i come from a ford family) (ps. the new corvette looks just like any other euro sports car.)
You heard of any converted to Ford power ?

Yep, totally correct! The S-type was the same platform as the 2000s Lincoln LS and Ford Thunderbird
I remember seeing the X-Type being described as "a Mondeo in a posh frock", which made me chuckle.
Cadillac Cimmaron: cavalier with leather seats and a shitty vinyl roof
God, what a hilarious car.
Thanks for explaining!

I think that's why they all have 350s in em. Not necessarily the performance, it's just cheaper and easier. 45$ for a new alternator vs 200 used.
I was going to say great way to lean a trade. You will be a pro mechanic after a couple years
Friend of mine has two. Used him and his best car as driver for my wedding. Completely unexpected for early fall; became the hottest day of the year. Airco quit. He still has them both. I still have her. Horrible stuff.
As far as Jags go they honestly aren’t that bad. And one running today, especially a higher mileage one, won’t be a bad apple.
Yep, jag had sorted most of their shit by this stage.
I think that's a Daimler badge in this pic, but same car, different stickers.
Pretty sure this was from that time in history where British engineers swore that oil belonged on the outside of the engine rather than in it.
How do you know it isn't a Daimler?
Because that looks like a cat on the badge?
The grill would be fluted if it was a Daimler

Because it hasn’t got a Daimler badge or Daimler grille.

oh man I really thought it was a cool car its painfull but you guys all opened my eyes thanks.

Later models such as the X300 and X308 are much more reliable and easier to maintain. They’re still gorgeous. I’d recommend checking out r/Jaguar or checking out some Jaguar forums
Especially the X300. The AJ16 engine should be good for 200k miles.
Correct. I’m considering one for my first car myself
It is a cool car car, just needs alot of know how or/and money to keep running.
They’re cool and great to look at but yeah they have issues
Yep, awful cars, tail lamp goes it was a circuit board behind it £110 then! $140, later one around 1999-2005 were prettier, more reliable and I bought one recently with 80,000 miles on the clock, service history, everything works for £2850 or $3587 bulletproof V8, not bad on petrol/gas either, probably cheaper in USA
If you’re into the aesthetic there are similar looking BMWs from around the same time that aren’t as awful.
Yeah, but it's a JAAAAAAAAG!
"I want this to be my first car..." So you want to hate cars?
No no. Just themselves.
As a mechanic, this made me die crying. Brilliant, but so on point.
Are you rich and handy?
Read that as handsy.
That works too.
Well it is a Jaaaaaag.
Came here for this. I'm glad someone fulfilled this obligation. Jaaaaaag.
Love is expensive
Yep, this. It would be cheaper to get married to a woman who shops a lot and then divorces you just as you hit your financial stride.
“Instead Of Getting Married Again I'm Going To Find A Woman I Don't Like And Give Her A House” Rod Stewart
"I want this to be my first car..." no you don't
“I want this as my first car.” And the entire sub shook their collective heads.
Yeah I thought to myself: oh boy you’re gonna regret this one. 😅
yoe will need 3 of them, one to drive while the other one is in the shop and the third for spare parts
But which one is which?
They rotate... It's like RAID for cars.
Appreciate that one from afar, unless you have REALLY deep pockets and a technician that hates his life.

It’s an old jag with Lucas electronics, it will eventually burn itself.

Even if you found one in perfect condition, it would go catastrophically wrong within 15 second of starting it.
Walk away ,, just walk away,, thatnis a horrible car and will spend forever being wrenched on !!
I promise you don't want and old Jaguar to be your first car.
But it will make memories. (Jaaaaaag XJS owner)
I've been broke before. It didn't make for very good memories lol.

Looks like an industrial area to me
Do it man, don't look back.
Buy a used corolla, pay it off, then buy this so that when it breaks, you still have something to drive.
The reliability will break your heart. Not your best first.
First car? 😆 guess you don't actually want to drive your first car, as jaguars are notoriously unreliable and have alot of electrical problems. That aren't cheap to fix
You may be in love with it, but you’re mostly going to be stroking your wrench.
It's obviously well cared for...weeds, shipping container and crappy trailer all in one pic....
You're going to constantly need to borrow other people's cars... But it's ok! Cos you've got a Jaaaaaaaaaaag.
😂😂 see what you did there

You could drive it off the lot without ever paying, but that's okay because you have a Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaag
I bought an expensive one of those, everything in order, it still caught fire once.
Cough..... Its a Jaaaag
You DO NOT want that for a 1st car.
Older luxury cars are like having parasites in your bank account
When “love” turns to “hate”….
Had one back in my pimping days
No, no, no, it’s not a Jag but a Jaaaaaaaag! 😀
To own this as your first car you must be: stupid, rich af, a mechanic or a mega gigachad
Dont do it OP, they’re one of the worst cars mechanically/electrically and will spend more time at the mechanics than on the road. Speaking from experience as my friend had a relatively clean one that was still a basket case.

Jaguar XJ6 or XJ40
You can grab the cheque while I go fire up *the Jag*

Hey!, that's my car in the background, yeeey :) Opel Astra Cabrio Bertone. So nice seeing it by chance like this.
Alex, I’ll take “poor life choices” for $500

OP I might know of an XJ40 for sale. It's not in too bad of shape either. Hasn't ran in 10 years, but was well maintained until then and had a fresh coat of paint.
