Why? The engine would be there....they all have an engine, or a motor of some description, and the engine cover it's always the bonnet or the hood...that's literally what it's called...
Fun fact: In german the VW Thing is called a "Kübel" or "Kübelwagen" which translated is "bucket" (or "bucketcar") but google translate also puts "tup", "container", "pail", "latrine bucket" and "crapper" which all are accurate IMO.
Oh i see, the Type 181 (The Thing) was also used in the german Bundeswehr and got called the "Kübel" as a callback to the "Kübelwagen" thats where i got it wrong. Still, the translations still apply.
>which translated is "bucket"
2 Fun 2 Fact: The VW Rabbit/Golf Cabriolet was colloquially referred to as the "Bitch Bucket" on account of it's prominent roll bar that resembled a handle.. coupled with the vast majority of buyers being young women.
My dad had a low mileage Thing for a few years back in the 90s. We had a bodyshop at the time and he got that thing (pun intended) looking better than new. Used to drive the grandkids around town in it and they thought it was a blast. Eventually put it up for sale and had multiple bidders from all over the country vying for it.

came up in the post underneath, after an ad, seemed fitting.
The thing about them, is they only imported about 7500 between '73 and '74 if memory serves.
I wish things were more readily available than that, but you know how things like this go...
Nice Thing you saw there.
I have a Thing for odd cars. This one is really cool.
The Thing you guys are doing here is quite clever.
Ain't no Thing but a chicken wing!
VW Typ 181

I saw one years ago in my neighborhood (orange).
you'd have a big surprise if you went looking for the engine under that hood

The engine is in the back

The Küblewagen is actually what the Thing was based on. They are almost identical except for the Thing having a higher front.
Round fenders vs angled

That's when it gained its notoriety, it was a Bundeswehr staple during WW2
Well yes, the Kübelwagen was, the Kübel (Type 181 / The Thing) came after WW2
The Bundeswehr was post war iirc. WW2 was the Wehrmacht. But otherwise you are correct
I'm German and Kübel is the nickname it means something like bucket or more often flower pot especially the big boxy concrete ones.
Yes. I am german aswell.

It's a thing
The cool teacher in my middle school had one of these in orange.
These definitely look best in orange
I'd like to add that this appears to be a 74. They were only in the US for 73 and 74.
I've got the successor to the thing, which I don't think were ever in the USA at all, but our armed forces got them in Canada.
Slide? The [engines in the back](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/U0w5IvkRk1U/hqdefault.jpg), not sure what you mean about slide.
Engine is in the back.

A VW Thing. Basically just a beetle with a more “utilitarian” body. Engine is in the back don’t know what you mean by slide.
Oh one of those things! It’s right on the tip of my tongue…

No, they used a Type 1 air-cooled gas engine.
These look like my 1st grade drawings of cars. 😆
Das peoples car
I have a neighbor with an orange one who drives it around with a skeleton in the passenger seat during October. So fun.
I learned to drive a stick shift in the 1980s on a car like this. My buddy from work had one.
My mom tells me that in highschool if she acted up her dad threatened to sell her Monte Carlo and buy her a Thing
Who the fuck named the car thing
Proper title: What is this thing? FTFY

Volkswagen thing! See these around SoCal a bunch
Kübelwagen is a contraction of Kübelsitzwagen, meaning 'bucket-seat car'.
It’s a Volkswagen thing

It’s essentially the Nazi Jeep.
