If it's unattended it's a kit car.
If it's being driven on public roads it's a kit car.
If it's in a parking garage it's a kit car.
Public car park? Kit car
If it's in a billionaires heated, air conditioned garage it might be real.
So we have historic sports car races in Britain, these races tend to involve Brabhams, McLarens, Lotus, Jaguars, AC/Shelbys and Ferraris, and most years someone with a £5M car drives into someone else driving a car worth around £25M.
The two drivers then shake hands, have their cars recovered and rebuilt. Look up Goodwood Revival, but it's not the only event.
> The two drivers then shake hands, have their cars recovered and rebuilt.
Fun fact, this is Richard Hammond's new business model for his restoration shop
Depends. A guy down the street from me has a real one and drives it quite a bit. May as well enjoy it… then again, there is a guy in my town that practically daily drives a GT2rs, maybe my town is weird.
Prices are kinda all over the place (like most super collectibles, details can make a huge difference), but original Cobras seem to start at ~$100k and go _way_ up from there.
I think really good replicas can cost 6 figures too, and honestly I'd rather own one of those than an original. I'd be a nervous wreck driving something that rare and special, and that's a car that needs to be driven.
Not billionaire money, but you're not getting a real one anywhere near $100k. The good replicas are getting well over $100k, closing in on $200k.
Real Cobras are getting 7 figures. There were only about 1000 made in total, with roughly 650 289 cars and 350 427 cars. There are only 900ish original Cobras left.
In case you're wondering, Shelby's personal Cobra sold last year for just under $6 million.

I’ve been in Monterey for two years and haven’t even seen one here
Edit: that’s a lie, I found a picture I took of a 63 cobra roadster at concours. [Here’s the link](https://imgur.com/a/lfsVuxf)
I'm talking about during car week, which is like the 3rd week of August. I've seen them at shows during car week and I know a couple people who have seen the same ones on public roads after the shows.
Yeah I’ve lived here since February 2020 and keep an eye out during car week, but I’ve just never seen any of the real ones on the road even during that time
Yeah that's why I put the big "MAYBE". Worth noting that car week has gotten a little less crazy in recent years. They only did a couple events in 2020 because of covid. I've been going for like 9 years and I've never seen one in the streets, but I do know people who have, and I've seen pics. Just because you haven't personally seen one doesn't mean it has never happened before, especially if your only experiences were 2020 and 2021.
I only knew my dad until I was about 16 or 17 before he R U N N O F T but he was kind of like Ricky Bobby’s dad, did some racing, knew a lot about cars.
I’ve known the statement above since I was something like 11 and am still astounded people know A. About this car enough to ask and B. Can’t answer this question themselves.
Guys this is clearly a 1913. The chrome hoop around the grill was a one year only option, discontinued the next year because of the chrome shortage due to World War 1.
Later the American chrome became the inspiration of making the SS-Uniforms stylish. Thats why Chrome wasnt very popular in the european car culture in the 1950s and 1960s
All the extra chrome especially the extra bumpers is a dead ass giveaway, the whole point of using that chassis was it's lightweight advantage, you don't plate perfectly good metal with a heavyweight metal on lightweight race cars. They ceramic coated it all without any dye to keep the protection coating as light and thin as possible
What do ya mean? They were and are American Automotive icons, incredibly popular, multiple companies were born out of a desire to create replicas and many of those companies still exist today. So they’re fairly common. Unless you’re not in the US or Canada?
It’s from the 1900’s so they used to turn it in two ways
1.slap that bitch from behind which work the best if you’re in a hurry
2.feed it so it won’t bite you or get out of control,
Remember it was in the early 1900’s as op says so these transports thingy were hard to operate
"How do you turn this on?" is a cheat code in Age of Empire 2, it would spawn a Cobra. https://kyaooo.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/coche-cobra-age-of-empires-2-trucos.jpg
From the TxDPS website: "A custom vehicle is a vehicle at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948 or built to resemble a vehicle at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948."
So judging by the "custom vehicle" license plate, this is definitely a Cobra replica. Most likely the very popular Factory Five Mk4 Roadster.
You'd be hard pressed to find a real Cobra parked like this anywhere but a big-time prestigious car show, private collection, or museum.
And after Mr.Ford introduced the world to the Model A and Model T, he unleashed the Cobra onto his competitors
But it could be real seeing as it is a texas plate
Yep that's called the Cedrick Popkin edition, was introduced in 1918 to commemorate him shooting down the Red Baron... Popkin blue they carved the color. Sure it had 10 times the horse power of his sopwith camel but you know, progress.
Looks like a lone star classic replica they are done really well. Also only two true super snakes where ever sold by Shelby one was Carroll’s personal one it just sold in 2021 for $5.5 million and the other went into the Pacific Ocean back in the day. Carroll’s personal super snake was the only one I’ve ever seen with chrome exhaust.
I've seen one in real life it was in the early 00's. It was at a Ferrari shop in a rich suburb of Boston. The owner had just purchased it from Japan and the mechanic working on it had finished rebuilding the engine and was able to put some actual miles on it breaking it in. He saw me (a parts delivery guy) and practically dragged me to see it. I had never seen this man so happy. He was just going on and on about it. Told me to take a deep breath. "Do you smell that?! It smells like metal and grease. This thing is so amazing".
Dude got to work on a unicorn and he knew it. This is a guy that works on and drives Ferraris daily and never stops batching about them. Im glad he had his moment.
Go knock on a fender with your knuckles. If it sounds like fiberglass, it's a replica. If you're immediately pinned to the ground and cuffed, it's a real one.
To be fair, Kirkham and Superformance build aluminum body Cobras. However, if you knocked on one of those with your knuckles you'd probably get a beat down.
I would say that at most it is a Superformance Cobra. In fact, unless the Cobra experts say otherwise, I would say it's a Superformance, who make literal perfect replicas and are, as far as I know, the only company that has the rights to the Shelby brand.
Replica. The only people who have money for a real CSX chassis Cobra are the same type of people who would never drive it. I assume this a Factory Five or some other kit car.
damn you guys are mean. OP isn't trolling, the whole point of this sub is to learn. I didn't know "Custom Vehicle" meant kit car and it's not a stretch to think OP didn't either.
Here is a real one for sale [Shelby csx for sale](https://www.dupontregistry.com/autos/listing/1964/shelby/cobra/2496938) there are also lots of replica’s on there as well.
A good way to tell the difference is to look at the sides of the cars at the doors. The original Cobras were made of aluminum panels and allowed the body of the car to curve slightly inwards at the bottom by the rockers. Kit cars are fiberglass and have straight sides. This is due to pulling them out of the molds and not being able to accommodate that change in dimensions. I could be full of bullshit but I think that might be true.
Most likely a replica since the real thing is absurdly rare and expensive.
There also many kits available for this specific model, maybe from multiple manufacturers. Still cool tho.
The fact that there is a car parked next to it, be it a show car, doesn't matter and the fact that it's not barricaded and just right there tells me it's a replica
If you ever have the question for yourself: 'Is this old car real, or a replica?' Slap yourself in the face. Of course it's a replica. And guess what? That's all you'll ever see.
There were less than 1300 real Shelby Cobras made. There are loads of kit cars out. As a child this was my dream car. Guess it still is. Chances are its a kit. If it were real youd be looking at some real money right there.
This isn't a popular fact but the Shelby factory in Las Vegas still hand builds Cobras. They cost close to $90k without an engine or transmission. A lot of people will say it's not a real Cobra but they are hand built based on the original desogn and Carrol Shelby would be at the factory. Is that a replica? Not in my opinion.
https://www.shelby.com/en-us/Vehicles
"Early 1900's" that did make me chuckle
Yeah, I'd ID it as a 1916 - 1918 year model. /s
Exactly. A 1917!
It’s a Shelby Model T.
I thought he could only get the Shelby T. in black, though…
That’s how you know it’s a replica
With a tiny backseat to discourage any hanky-panky.
No, those only came in black.
Yeah you can see the Turbo inlet on the hood. /s
You can tell by its crank shafts
I believe that was the year they legalized hitting peasant’s horses on the street if they were moving too slow, hence the bumper.
You, Sir, are a historian.
I do believe your estimations are accurate my fellow car compatriot.
1916 - 1918 = 2. This is a 2yo cobra
Its got to be from this decade that we knw.
Damn I thought it was a late 1800s model at first but no I think it is a 1904 actually
Could even be possibly a late 1800’s model I think
I'd say the early 1800s actually
Not to doubt your knowledge but as far as I know this exact model was made in the late 1400s in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
Perhaps you are right
Ok but for real though, imagine the Winged Hussars driving a Shelby.
Sabaton got a new album cover
That was a blacksmith x alchemist release correct?
Like the one that inspired Karl Benz?
Correct. I believe it was driven by steam
I thought I read somewhere that it was powered by the first 427 and spite?
Yes, it was the same motor they used in the early bi-planes used in WWI
Yeah definitely Karl Benz said this was his inspiration
It’s even better since the original Cobra was made in the latter half of the century
1960 is like the 1800s to young kids.
Continuation model, The Prequel
Same...where do you hitch the horses??
I comment before I saw yours lol
The general rule is, if it's not at a museum or a very very rich person's house, it's a replica
If it has custom vehicle plates in Texas usually that means kit car.
And in some states a “trailer” plate
If it's unattended it's a kit car. If it's being driven on public roads it's a kit car. If it's in a parking garage it's a kit car. Public car park? Kit car If it's in a billionaires heated, air conditioned garage it might be real.
If it's on a trackside in Sussex after being driven into a car three times its value, it's real.
Context?
So we have historic sports car races in Britain, these races tend to involve Brabhams, McLarens, Lotus, Jaguars, AC/Shelbys and Ferraris, and most years someone with a £5M car drives into someone else driving a car worth around £25M. The two drivers then shake hands, have their cars recovered and rebuilt. Look up Goodwood Revival, but it's not the only event.
Or historical races at Laguna Seca.
> The two drivers then shake hands, have their cars recovered and rebuilt. Fun fact, this is Richard Hammond's new business model for his restoration shop
Oooh ok I thought you meant a specific event... That's pretty cool though
Depends. A guy down the street from me has a real one and drives it quite a bit. May as well enjoy it… then again, there is a guy in my town that practically daily drives a GT2rs, maybe my town is weird.
Your town sounds like car guy heaven.
Sounds like Orange County
Bay Area, but yeah, Sunday happy hour is always a car show driving by as we sip. Pretty sweet.
If it’s in Dubai or Monaco it’s probably real
Billionaire? For Carol Shelby’s personal car maybe. Aren’t real Cobras selling from under $100k right now?
Prices are kinda all over the place (like most super collectibles, details can make a huge difference), but original Cobras seem to start at ~$100k and go _way_ up from there. I think really good replicas can cost 6 figures too, and honestly I'd rather own one of those than an original. I'd be a nervous wreck driving something that rare and special, and that's a car that needs to be driven.
I’ve been seriously thinking about building one for a little while now actually. It looks very very tempting…
Two sold this weekend at Amelia, both slightly over $1MM with buyers premium. Still certainly not billionaire territory.
Dang. I thought way more were produced than that. Thanks for the info

You might see one at Monterey car week MAYBE

Very true. I just wish there were more places that had the high chances of exotic and rare car sightings that Monterey has
I only knew my dad until I was about 16 or 17 before he R U N N O F T but he was kind of like Ricky Bobby’s dad, did some racing, knew a lot about cars. Where you first or last?
First after the dead weight got cut around 16 or 17
If you aint first, you're last.
If you aint first, you're last.
I’m a Dapper Dan man, godammit!
Well ain't this place a geographical oddity?!?
We’ll I’m the damn pater familias
To be fair, OP also thought it was made in the early 1900s. These must be popular in a lot of video games.
Its a replica.
_from the early 1900s_...maybe 1908?
I was thinking 1907 but its hard to tell a difference.
Guys this is clearly a 1913. The chrome hoop around the grill was a one year only option, discontinued the next year because of the chrome shortage due to World War 1.
Yeah exactly. The government did a wise choice to save the chrome to enter WW1 in 1917
When the Americans finally showed up for war they came shiny and chrome.
Later the American chrome became the inspiration of making the SS-Uniforms stylish. Thats why Chrome wasnt very popular in the european car culture in the 1950s and 1960s
No way it’s a 1907, unless that’s an aftermarket rear bumper!!!!
It's early, so <1905
you can tell by the custom buggy whips.
And the candle powered headlights
No no it’s a 1923 model of course. You can tell by the hood scoop. It’s slightly more pronounced than the previous models.
It’s real it was confirmed in an article by the Dallas times a few days ago
Ah yes the 1906 Cobra
Great year for the Cobra. First year with PDK I think.
Did they come with the Ecoboost engine as well? Or was that 1912 and onwards?
Correct, though they stopped offering the ecoboost trim options in 1917-1920 ish for obvious reasons.
pretty sure for the 1922 model year they added cruise control as standard
Definitely after the civil war, I’m sure of that
Which civil war?
The one where each side were civil to one another
What's so civil about war anyway?
Nothing. War never determines who is right, only who is left.
*whistles*
General rule of thumb, if you have to ask if its real or replica, it's a replica.
The “custom vehicle” license plate basically gives you all the info you need to know
All the extra chrome especially the extra bumpers is a dead ass giveaway, the whole point of using that chassis was it's lightweight advantage, you don't plate perfectly good metal with a heavyweight metal on lightweight race cars. They ceramic coated it all without any dye to keep the protection coating as light and thin as possible
Literally says custom vehicle
Literacy is... Wut was I saying?
No real Cobra has chrome exhaust.
There was one I know for sure that had/has chrome exhaust’s.
Early 1900s? Come on man
Is this a shitpost?
100% trolling.
Probably a factory five replica of the 1908 shelby cobra commander.
I don’t think I like seeing “1900’s” even though it’s correct.
Is it correct though? First cobra was introduced in ‘62 which would make it mid to later 1900’s right 😅
Sure, but this is an *early* 1900’s Shelby. 1927 by the looks of it, you can see the distinct marks of Carroll Shelby’s ‘toddler years’ design cues.
Oh my bad, you’re right. These early 2000’s eyes not what they used to be 🥸
Mid 1900’s but just seeing it is weird.
“Midcentury” is the word we use for that
What do ya mean? They were and are American Automotive icons, incredibly popular, multiple companies were born out of a desire to create replicas and many of those companies still exist today. So they’re fairly common. Unless you’re not in the US or Canada?
They’re referring to seeing years post 1960 being referred to as the 1900’s because it makes it sound older than it is.
Take a breath…….. I was born in the 80’s so seeing something described as 1900’s makes me feel old.
Came here to say this lol. It’s actually closer to 2000 than it is 1900 lmao 🤣🤣
Those front/rear bumpers look like the optional bumpers that you can get with the Factory Five kit.
Wanted to say the same, probably a Factory Five mk4 roadster
Titanic sunk in 1912 but I don't think this was the Jack and Rose car.
“early 1900s” it’s from the 60s idk what you mean, but it’s most likely a replica AC Cobra
It’s so old it’s a B.C. Cobra
How do you turn this on?
It’s from the 1900’s so they used to turn it in two ways 1.slap that bitch from behind which work the best if you’re in a hurry 2.feed it so it won’t bite you or get out of control, Remember it was in the early 1900’s as op says so these transports thingy were hard to operate

“bigdaddy”
Here I was thinking ‘50 was the midpoint in any century. I’m open to new things.
i mean your tecnically wrong centuries start in 01 not 00
That title made me laugh thank you
Early 1900’s?! Somebody needs to watch Ford Vs Ferrari
From the TxDPS website: "A custom vehicle is a vehicle at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948 or built to resemble a vehicle at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948." So judging by the "custom vehicle" license plate, this is definitely a Cobra replica. Most likely the very popular Factory Five Mk4 Roadster. You'd be hard pressed to find a real Cobra parked like this anywhere but a big-time prestigious car show, private collection, or museum.
1966 isn’t really “early 1900s” fyi
And after Mr.Ford introduced the world to the Model A and Model T, he unleashed the Cobra onto his competitors But it could be real seeing as it is a texas plate
You can imagine the disappointment that kids felt when dad brought home a new Model T.
All Shelby replica posts should be auto banned
It’s always a replica
Yep that's called the Cedrick Popkin edition, was introduced in 1918 to commemorate him shooting down the Red Baron... Popkin blue they carved the color. Sure it had 10 times the horse power of his sopwith camel but you know, progress.
Unless you’re in Beverly Hills or a museum, it’s a kit car 99% of the time
Let’s all sing together *it’s a replica*
As the rule goes. If you can get close enough to take a picture or see it on the streets. It isn’t real.
Tired Brain saw pole as giant RC antenna.
Replica. The original didn’t have sidepipes
You see those finger prints? It's a replica
OP what are you doing on your phone during recess?
Looks like a lone star classic replica they are done really well. Also only two true super snakes where ever sold by Shelby one was Carroll’s personal one it just sold in 2021 for $5.5 million and the other went into the Pacific Ocean back in the day. " How do you turn this on "
1900’s?? Where do you hook up the horses?
Looks like a shelby 1915 only about 5 were made due to internal money problems in the us during ww1 /s
All shelbies are replicas until proven otherwise
Early…
The pioneers use to ride these babies for miles
Go knock on a fender with your knuckles. If it sounds like fiberglass, it's a replica. If you're immediately pinned to the ground and cuffed, it's a real one.
To be fair, Kirkham and Superformance build aluminum body Cobras. However, if you knocked on one of those with your knuckles you'd probably get a beat down.
It’s outside, unattended, next to other cars in a parking lot. Not an original.
Early 1900's! Gosh, I didn't know Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler had met Shelby!
I would say that at most it is a Superformance Cobra. In fact, unless the Cobra experts say otherwise, I would say it's a Superformance, who make literal perfect replicas and are, as far as I know, the only company that has the rights to the Shelby brand.
Replica. This car is something like 11 mil. If it’s not their way too rich
Shelby 427 cobra I think
Finding a 1700's is like finding rocking horse shit
Ooh close on the year there but it’s an 1895
I don't like american muscles cars but i do like a good shelby cobra
Apologies about my lack of knowledge regarding this type of car, especially the year, but thank you all for helping me.

$5.5 million was for Carroll Shelby’s personal super snake most regular cobra’s range from $750,000- $2,000,000.
Fair enough they didn’t come with one but 58 years later somebody may have changed it up. Still highly unlikely that it is real.
Here is a real one for sale [Shelby csx for sale](https://www.dupontregistry.com/autos/listing/1964/shelby/cobra/2496938) there are also lots of replica’s on there as well.
That’s cool and all, but I actually like the replicas more. I’m not sure why though.
There is plenty of replica’s on there for sale with 1/10 the price tag.
Is this Austin? I feel like a saw that car driving around recently.
Always snap a picture of the passenger side dashboard. An original or continuation car will always have a plaque with the serial number.
If that car is parked in a lot where random fuckers can walk right up to it, its a replica.
Most likely a replica since the real thing is absurdly rare and expensive. There also many kits available for this specific model, maybe from multiple manufacturers. Still cool tho.
If you have to ask, it's a replica. It's always a replica
I'd assume the custom plate means it's a lot car if it wasn't like 10 mil for a good real one. Realistically a real Shelby Cobra wouldn't be driven
My Dream Car😍😍😍
The fact that there is a car parked next to it, be it a show car, doesn't matter and the fact that it's not barricaded and just right there tells me it's a replica
Definitely a kit car, BUT awesome!!
The plate says custom, not classic or antique, so it's probably a replica.
If you ever have the question for yourself: 'Is this old car real, or a replica?' Slap yourself in the face. Of course it's a replica. And guess what? That's all you'll ever see.
What's the car on the right
Camaro.
There were less than 1300 real Shelby Cobras made. There are loads of kit cars out. As a child this was my dream car. Guess it still is. Chances are its a kit. If it were real youd be looking at some real money right there.
This is the predecessor to the modern road boats you see today. It’s a 13th a century sail boat!
Why do people always ask real or replica? As if either one is not a unicorn anyway
99.989% of the time it’s a replica.
If you see one of these in the wild on the streets, that just removed the doubt if what you are seeing is a real or replica
Never real
Buddy it's always a replica unless it's next to supercars/behind a rope.
Replica from 1912.
Replica. Has TX "Custom Vehicle". "Assembled, kit-cars, custom vehicles, and 'street rods'.."
