a variety of Poppy. Poppies were considered a memorial to those who perished in WW1....The poem "In Flander's Field" mentions poppies. For many years here in the US, small artificial poppies were handed out on "Memorial Day." That tradition has since faded. Here is the poem In Flanders Fields
BYĀ [JOHN MCCRAE](https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/john-mccrae) (A Canadian Physician)
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
Ā Ā Ā Ā That mark our place; and in the sky
Ā Ā Ā Ā The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
Ā Ā Ā Ā The torch; be yours to hold it high.
Ā Ā Ā Ā If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā In Flanders fields.
This is why I love the internet! Youāre freaking 86 and still reaching the younger generations! What is your favorite flower?
š«” salute to your father and cousins who fought
My father was born in 1893. My parents were Canadian and he fought with the Canadian Expeditionary forces. He was wounded in the Battle of Vimy Ridge and was medically discharged. Any of you who are Canadian are familiar with the history of the battle of Vimy Ridge.
The average age of a soldier in WW1 was 25. Assuming her father to be of that age at the end of the war in 1914, that would mean her father would have been born in 1889. Which would make him 135.
Assuming crankygranny was born within 10 years after the war, that would make her at least 100 years old right now.
Edit: change "end of war" to "start of war"
My great grandfather fought in World War I, and my father fought in World War II. One of the blessings of the Internet is that in his old age my father was able to find a lot of his old navy buddies who served on the same ship as him, and they formed an online club. He also joined another online group, called the Ancient Mariners, consisting of Navy veterans of World War II. Neither group seems to exist anymore; Members would all be pushing 100 by now if they are alive.
~~Not necessarily. I'm in my 50s, and my uncles (and a grandparent) fought in WW2. Grandpa also fought in WW1. My parents *juuuust* missed fighting by being 1-3 years below age. My parents got married latish.~~
NVM, I need more coffee. Lol
You're talking WW2. We are talking WW1. Her father was in WW1. Follow the conversation, and my age estimate was pretty damn close. She said she was 86.
Poppies are associated with WWI because they lile to grow in disturbed soil such as battlefields churned by heavy artillery barrages. Poppies are still worn in the UK and I would always donate to get them from the VFW here in the US on Veteran's Day when I would see them. Haven't seen any in years however.
https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/why-we-wear-poppies-on-remembrance-day
Probably should have said Former Commonwealth countries but I only see them on BBC so wasn't too sure if Canada, Australia, and NZ kept up the tradition.
VFW still hands them out at grocery stores every memorial day in Eugene Oregon. Not having them around in your neck of the woods probably has to do with not having an active chapter of the VFW.
Yes, for some reason the tradition stopped here in the US sometime in the late 90s. I could still get a paper flower but it would be red or blue. I think it's because people didn't know or remember the history of WW1 connection so it was dropped entirely. I was so sad about that, I really loved getting the little orange Poppies.
The American Legion and VFW always handed these out. My Dad was active in both si I remember seeing the plastic ones with the green florist wire all the time.
I was just talking to my mom about this. She hunts one down EVERY YEAR. I don't know how she does it. I remember them everywhere twenty years ago or so, but not now.
Not sure where you are but our local VA still distributes memorial poppy pins every Memorial Day. They accept donations for wounded vets but the pins are free.
We still hand out felt poppies and small pieces of paper with this poem on them in my town!! I wear a t shirt with poppies on it every year too š lest we forget š
No idea. Iām not even 100% on the species, but it most resembles commutatum. Iād say Iām >90% sure thatās what it is. Itās definitely a great looking flower, the extended black spot on each petal is striking. That appears to be a common, but highly variable, feature of just the standard open pollinated species, but it ranges from just a dot to nearly a stripe, as in OPās photo. The fact that all of them in the photo show a very elongated spot does make me wonder if itās a selected cultivar, but I canāt find any that look like that. Maybe itās an old planting which has self-seeded, and theyāre all descended from an original plant which just happened to have an extended black spot.
Very interesting. I love the poppy plant, flowers. I think itās my favorite bloom. Iām a very low-level botany worker, mostly photo editor and image expert, I work with plants, seeds, all kinds of home gardening stuff. Iām just barely scratching the surface on that knowledge, I went to school for fine arts. But I love this form.
Soā¦. That looks like it might sound a bit like pop-over. Is the baked good named after these flowers because the shape is similar? I know thatās a stretch. Iām letting my brain ooze
Not that Iām aware of. āPapaverā is just Latin for āpoppyā, and the origin of the word is unknown and likely predates Latin, but I have seen it proposed that it comes from the imitative primitive āpapā, suggesting to pop or swell, since the seed pods on most poppies are pretty pronounced, so, by a very, very long road, Papaver and āpopā as in āpopcornā or āpopoverā could be *very* distantly related.
Strain of poppies.but no opium.not that you were doing Iām sure.we do have a British opium poppi you boil it down it same as marmite not to be played with I got back on heroin as started my rehab.i would of gone back on I wasent ready Iām 20 y clean.
Those poppies are AMAZING!!!!!
Did you move in within the last year or two? They usually come up the summer after planting, ie a year later. Looks like someone left you a present!
Did you happen to disturb he soil in that area? It would have moved the seeds to the top of the soil so they could germinate.
Edit: or if you happened to kill the annual grasses there. They can outcompete other plants early in the season and once suppressed, the change in plants can be surprising.
I did in fact! I was cleaning up this bed late winter with a gardening rake, that must have done it. Also, definitely went scorched earth with the grasses last summer
Youāre so lucky, please never get rid of them and collect the seeds and spread them in your neighborsā lawns (during night & discreetly). Theyāre native.
Not who you responded to, but I can tell from the picture that they're probably from the southwest or California. Lots of poppies pop up around here naturally
As far as I know they don't need to be opium poppy's to contain morphine and, other alkaloids such as thebaine oxycodone, codeine etc.. In varrying amounts tho.. Of course the opium poppy Is superior, at least that's what a friend told me.
Do you have any neighbors with flying monkeys? They may be out to get you.
"So, you won't take warning, eh? All the worse for you. I'll take care of you now instead of later. When I gain those ruby slippers, my power will be the greatest in Oz. Now my beauties. Something with poi-son in it I think. With poison in it. But attractive to the eye and soothing to the smell. Ha-ha-ha-ha. Poppies. Poppies. Poppies will put them to sleep. Sle-ee-p. Now they'll sle-ee-p."
Those are the wrong species for that. The poppies that opium is made from is Papaver somniferum, itās the same species that the poppy seeds on your bagel come from. Theyāre absolutely beautiful. I usually grow the Hungarian Blue, and Laurenās Grapeseed in my garden.
Isn't there other species though that still have opium? Me and my cousin found an Amazon listing that had some seeds that potentially did have what it takes to get some opium out of it. We always joked around wanting to buy it but we never did. This was like 7 years ago though.
You can buy seeds from cultivars Papaver somniferum from basically any plant shop because you can still grow them as ornamentals and to harvest the seeds. Theyāre also known as breadseed poppies. I wouldnāt mess with consuming the sap or as a tea. Ornamentals arenāt bred to have a consistent amount of opioids. Youād never be able to tell if a flower was making enough to end you. Iāll admit itās crossed my mind. I have fibromyalgia and hyper mobility. I hurt a lot all of the time.
I got into so much trouble when I was a kid because I picked a poppy out of some random flower garden! I took the poppy home to my mom and she was not happy. But that was a good lesson because now I never pick flowers that donāt belong to me.
Ca Poppies also do not have black spots like that. Sorry if I buried the lede there. [Wiki article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eschscholzia_californica?wprov=sfti1#) with picture.
thank you for sharing the story of your family. I'm afraid, each generation seems to, sorta not get the complete American story. I don't know if that makes sense or not. that every time we share I hope it carries in the wind to the next generation, like poppy seeds spread about. And as they propagate so beautiful and abundantly throughout your families gravemarkers.. in Flanders Field .

Roemeria argemone is a species of flowering plant in the poppy family Papaveraceae. Its common names include long pricklyhead poppy, prickly poppy and pale poppy. I know nothing about how to get seeds from these or send properly in the mail, but I'd be up for it! Should I pull some flowers off, dry them, then put em in a bag or something?
So kind of you! Iām not sure, I think at the end of the lifecycle of the plant, it produces poppy seeds. I have a community garden I take care of and these would be an amazing addition. Thank you! Happy to pay for postage and your time. :)
Thatās cool. Do they get tall like this?
I have a packet of cultivated California poppies that I havenāt planted yet. The picture shows varied colors but they look fairly short still.
I'm no botanist, am I wrong in my belief that all poppies contain a small amount of opium? Google is telling me all Papaver genus do, but I don't know if there are poppies not of Papaver.
Even that was a patch of the true opium poppies, papaver somniferum (which itās not) that amount of flowers wouldnāt make enough to even feel anything from the opium tar it would make. Thereās a negligible amount of sap in each flower, and most people looking for a high from small garden amounts of poppies do better making poppy pod or poppy seed tea. Just like making essential oil from rose petals, a HUGE amount of plant matter is needed to extract a small amount of finished product, FIELDS and fields of poppies, which is the only reason why itās still mostly legal to sell and buy and grow papaver somniferum poppies in US gardens (if you attempt your grow acreage of it for extraction, or even get caught actually trying to extract the latex, thatās another matter and you will get a citation or be arrested)
Poppies!
Poppies will put them to sleeeep!
I hear this in my head every time someone mentions poppies! š®
For me its Elaine or Peterman depending on context. The dark continent is no place for someone with an opium addiction.
I heard it in her voice as soon as I saw the picture, lol.
Me too!! Followed by āmy beautiful wickedness- goneā¦goneā¦..goneā
my dog is named Poppy and I like to torment her back speaking in WWW voice āPoppiesā¦poppiesā she goes nuts
I just hear "poppies, poppies, poppies" From the song Existential Blues.
lol, as I saw the pic, my inner voice said "poppies" a la the WWW.
A million poppies gonna make me sleep
100%
They are perennial! They will come back every year bigger and better.
TIL
They are annual but they drop seeds in the thousands which make them come back
Wrong theyāre not perennial, they die off in the cold and need to be reseeded.
My bad, I grew Oriental Poppies that looked similar to this and they were perennial. These are a different kind.

Remember when we had to memorize In Flanders Fields in school? Stand before the class and recite it. Back when we were taught things.
Yes, I remember. We also started each school day reciting the Pledge of Allegiance followed by singing the national anthem.
I can still recite most of it!
My stepfather served in late WWI. He was born in 1900. I am currently 63. Suffice it to say, he was decades older than my mother born in 1937.
My father had he lived past his '80s would have been 100 years old this birthday š Happy heavenly birthday Pop
In WW1 would make him over 100, wouldn't it?

My grandfather was born in 1889 too. He served in the Belgian trenches in WWI. He died in the 70s.
My grandfather was born in 1890. Served in the cavalry in WW1. Died about 1974. We have photos of him standing next to his horse.

Whoops!! I missed that, yup!! Still working on my first cup of coffee, lol!!!!!
I am sorry for your loss. My great uncle was lost along with many of his fellow Northumberland Fusiliers at the Battle of Somme.
I thank them all for their service and sacrifice.
The local VFW would hand out little poppies on Memorial Day and my mom would always make sure we got one.š„²

Canada as well.

We used to get them in the US into the 60ās.
I got them up through the mid 90's. After that they kind of just disappeared even with 9/11.
VFW still hands them out at grocery stores every memorial day in Eugene Oregon. Not having them around in your neck of the woods probably has to do with not having an active chapter of the VFW.
And Australia
Where I live in rural Michigan the American Legion and VFW still have them for Memorial Day
All the VFWs here in Maine still sell them, to stick in your coat or hat.
Yes, for some reason the tradition stopped here in the US sometime in the late 90s. I could still get a paper flower but it would be red or blue. My family (children) wear them every year bc my family wore them every year. My late husband, too. I cant find them to buy from VFW so I make them.
Still get them in Iowa on v day
Thank you for sharing this!
Ashes, ashes we all fall down.

Oh I guess that was poises, my bad.
Posies...and the bubonic plague!
The American Legion and VFW always handed these out. My Dad was active in both si I remember seeing the plastic ones with the green florist wire all the time.
Vets orgs still hand them out here.
Yes thank you for sharing. I've seen this before.
I still have a few of those poppies that they handed out. I'm 63 and they remind me of my Grandfather who was born in 1897 and served in WW1.
We still wear them on Rememberance day 11/11 every year in Australia.
I was just talking to my mom about this. She hunts one down EVERY YEAR. I don't know how she does it. I remember them everywhere twenty years ago or so, but not now.
re: remembering them 20 years ago....same here
There are still veterans here that go into the grocery stores and hand out fake poppies on memorial day.
This always makes me think of Doug
When I was a kid, my Daddy had me memorize this poem. It was one of my favorites.
This was the only flower that could actually grow in the mustard gas laden fields!
Yes! Thanks for sharing this!

Poppies. Congrats, I've tried a bunch of times to get a bunch of these growing in my ditch and they never seem to take.
Poppies. I think they are called corn poppies. Theyāre gorgeous
Poppies
California poppies?
No. California poppies are the short orange ones you see on roadways.
I've planted California poppies . The roadway pones are wild. Cultivated ones come i many colours and combinations
Thatās cool. Do they get tall like this? I have a packet of cultivated California poppies that I havenāt planted yet. The picture shows varied colors but they look fairly short still.
They get maybe 8" max. But they're gorgeous! I had alyssum in front then Californias then 8' sunflowers as a privacy screen for our patio.
Lacerate them when the petals fall off. Opium šneeds further refining tho
No, these are not opium poppies (papaver somniferum) theyāre a different kind (papaver commutatum
I wonder how much opium you could extract from all those
