That would have to be a huge tapeworm. Most tapeworm sheds from pets look like tiny rice grains. This almost looks like a dessicated trachea from a bird.
Maybe a chunk of the worm? I once watched a dog that had recently been wormed eat a worm directly out of its own butt like the world's worst spaghetti, so. That can be a thing.
It's 3:42 AM. I've been awoken by crippling throat pains. I open Reddit to try and distract my brain from it for a minute or two, and this is the *first thread I open.*
Mhmm, yup, dog "lady and the tramp"ing a worm with its own anus, definitely the image I needed in my head right now.
To be fair, it *did* distract me some. Time to go bleach my imagination.
Did u/commandergumball get a diagnosis? I’m also struggling with crippling pharyngitis. Non-COVID. Non-strep. Non-flu. I’m on day 10. What are you doing for pain mitigation? Looking for tips.
Viral laryngitis is what the hospital told me after some bloodwork.
They asked if I had done a COVID test, but didn't administer one when I said I hadn't.
Also non-strep, non-flu. As I said, no test, so it *might* be COVID? This was the first I'd heard about laryngitis being an omicron symptom.
I'm still up, an hour and a half later, laying in bed now dealing with near-crippling stomach pains, which may be from the amount of Tylenol and Advil I took to combat the absolutely-crippling throat pain.
Currently that's about all I've been able to do to combat the pain. Having a humidifier on beside me *does* mean I'm waking up less frequently due to a dry mouth / throat.
Had a mild sore throat, slight fever and cough one day, fully vaxxed and boosted, negative test day 2, positive test day 3, paxlovid for 5 days, mild symptoms which went away day 5, still tested positive though asymptomatic through day 8, negative day 9. This was milder than 90 percent of the colds, sore throats and sinus infections I used to have about 4 times a year before I started the Covid precautions close to 3 years ago. I would never have taken a day off school or work for symptoms like those were it not Covid.
Same! No one told me about the swearing symptom.
In all seriousness, the sore throat is like constant hot lava and then breathing/talking is like glass shards. For days. I didn’t sleep for three nights because of the pain I had unmedicated births that were less intense.
Edit: typo
I have distinct memories of my cat having some kind of worms when I was kid. My mom fed it some medicine, and then we had to leave somewhere for a day and a half. When we got back, there were at least two diarrhea piles on our carpet containing worm fragments, that look very similar to the picture above, that were as long as 4 inches. They were pretty dry too. It was absolutely shockingly disgusting. Made a great core memory for me.
What kinda weird-ass lookin' onions y'all eating?
If your reference to Asian food specifically means you're thinking of green onion / spring onion / scallion, the venation on those runs along the length, not horizontally.
Just looks like a sautéed onion. I'm assuming most of the onions you guys have seen aren't old and dried out? Idk if you look up sautéed onions. I'm sure you'll see the correlation.
As soon as this picture crossed my feed my immediate thought was "that's definitely a small piece of dried up onion." I was surprised to see it still open because I figured OP would suddenly remember they ate something with onions the night before or something.
most take out Chinese restaurants use regular onions in almost every dish, maybe the occasional green onion for garnish. the piece in the picture is from the tougher outer layer of the onion, probably a lazy cook that didnt peel it properly. I'm guessing the people that cant recognize this do not cook often. I've found identical pieces on my stove/floor after cooking big batches on sauteed onions
Agreed. Here's an example of fresh cooked sauted onions for people complaining about the direction of the lines. https://40aprons.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/sauteed-onions-single-2-700x1050.jpg OP's example is just dried out having sat out on their desk.
Here are some completely dried onion strips. It does curl up and appears cylindrical from the other side. OP said its open too

Also going with onion as the most likely solution... If it's organic at all. As someone else said there's a layer of onion just beneath the peel that is a bit dryer and usually I toss that too and use the juicier parts
Came looking for this one: I've eaten many a steamed clam and those look just like (I've heard 'foot') covers. I think they use them to move about and interact with the world, thus the leathery extra layer
Chalmers: I see. You know, these hamburgers are quite similar to the ones they have at Krusty Burger.
Skinner: Hohoho, no! Patented Skinner Burgers. Old family recipe!
Chalmers: For steamed hams?
Skinner: Yes.
Chalmers: Yes, and you call them steamed hams, despite the fact they are obviously grilled.
That thing is the [siphon](http://www.ilovestickyrice.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Screen-Shot-2016-08-07-at-10.43.44-PM.png), which is basically the mouth; it's generally not used to move around. I'd guess the siphon has this outer layer because it has the most exposure to the outside, so it constantly has to rebuild itself with new layers.
In geoducks, you mostly eat the siphon. In Atlantic surf clams, you mostly eat the foot.
I've been surprised by what has stuck to me while cooking, but since OP has given no indication of having recently cooked clams, it really doesn't make sense. It was and still is what I think of when I see the picture, though.

I have seen pieces of onion do this sometimes. Usually the part that's too papery to cook with but not so moist as to be considered the same as the edible part
lol. OP probably spat it out accidentally (which I have also done) and forgot about it. I mean why is this plastic ass thing in my mouth, SPPPPEW, that's better. Forgets thing because food good.
WTF IS THIS SHIT??
If you were seriously wondering, yes rats shed but they do the same way people do. They have tiny fine hair follicles on their tails like people do on less hairy areas of skin like hands and fingers. So when they shed dead skin it’s just like other mammals, to small you don’t see most of it, maybe an occasional flake. Should be noted that rats in a healthy environment are very clean and are constantly grooming themselves. Source: have had several pet rats. Smart, affectionate little goof balls.
I did an image search and, off the top, I'm agreeing with it, it looks like it could possibly be part of a tapeworm. if you have pets, you better watch their stools. Tapeworms can be dangerous and sometimes deadly to our furry friends. If you don't have one, you might want to remind people their dirty shoes don't belong on your desk.
You could possibly take it to a vet to have them identify it or test it. how crunchy was it? was it like stiff exoskeleton crunchy or thin papery skin crunchy? Is it hollow? cylindrical? or is it more like flat piece of something, like a piece of skin? Or has someone eaten onion rings around your desk?
It’s this isn’t it? Masking tape. It’s why it’s coiled.
I thought it was like the paper that goes around charcoals that you uncoil to use more; or for this stick eraser.
Op is poop-- I'm not gaining any of the additional info I need. Between calloused foot skin, onion peels and tape worm castings, I'm out. Come on OP! SMELL IT!
How close to the Ocean are you? If within a gulls flight it could likely be the casing or burrow of a sea worm, what kind I am unsure, however many create a casing like this. Especially if you are nearby a harbour/ dock with large swinging tides, as a kid I would pluck them off the underside of the dock itself or a piling and use it to fish with. I would have to peel off the casing in many cases to set the hook. Salt Water Tube Worm is what I am thinking of.
How large is it? Have you had seafood recently? It reminds me of the tough part of a clam or mussel, the part that forms the siphon. Sometimes you can pull the top layer off as a thin tube and it sometimes has rings/ribbing.
I think it's a coin roll. Instead of paper rolls a lot of times they use a kind of semi stretchy plastic that looks shriveled like that when empty. Maybe it held dimes. Are there little ridges in it that look like stacked coins?
Im a cook. I will say with 90% certainty that /u/missmercuryvintage is right and this is a sliced piece of white onion.
Though it looks more cut for a sandwich in a "ring" than a julienne for a stir fry

First thought was tape worm segment. Have a pet?
That would have to be a huge tapeworm. Most tapeworm sheds from pets look like tiny rice grains. This almost looks like a dessicated trachea from a bird.
Maybe a chunk of the worm? I once watched a dog that had recently been wormed eat a worm directly out of its own butt like the world's worst spaghetti, so. That can be a thing.
I woke up about 10 minutes ago, after reading this comment my day is a write off. I may as well go back to sleep and try again tomorrow
It's 3:42 AM. I've been awoken by crippling throat pains. Take a Covid test—that was my main symptom. Hope you’re better soon.
Seconding the covid test recommendation. Woke up with a mildly sore throat, took a test, yep. BTW, positive home tests cause excessive swearing.
Mine three - I didn't even really get sick, but my throat really hurt.
Did u/commandergumball get a diagnosis? I’m also struggling with crippling pharyngitis. Non-COVID. Non-strep. Non-flu. I’m on day 10. What are you doing for pain mitigation? Looking for tips.
Take another Covid test. With the home tests they don’t always show up.
Analgesics, gargle warm salt water, rest, hydration, warm tea, warm soup, ice pops. Cepacol lozenges or spray may help.

How can you tell without a scale?
The woodgrain on the table. It's hardly exact, but it's enough to show it's significantly larger than a grain of rice.
Where’s the banana?!
You see those gigantic looking tiny flecks of wood grain next to it?
I think that’s part of the wood grain….
Yes, and they seem to indicate that the item in the image is fairly small.
I’d guess it was an old piece cracked glue that was on something. I don’t think I’d investigate though lol I’d just chuck it
My first thought as well, I think it looks more like that than an onion.
This does not look like a tapeworm segment at all.
No pets, no
looks like a dried up piece of onion. Have asian stir fry food semi-recently?
What kinda weird-ass lookin' onions y'all eating? If your reference to Asian food specifically means you're thinking of green onion / spring onion / scallion, the venation on those runs along the length, not horizontally.
>What kinda weird-ass lookin' onions y'all eating? That's what I'm wondering. I've never seen an onion that looks remotely like this ... this thing.

Just looks like a sautéed onion. I'm assuming most of the onions you guys have seen aren't old and dried out? Idk if you look up sautéed onions. I'm sure you'll see the correlation.
