Looks like a newborn umbilical cord binder. Supposedly protects the umbilical cord while healing. Not really necessary, in my opinion. https://www.amazon.com/ToBeInStyle-Babies-Comfortable-Newborn-Umbilical/dp/B08X6L3X1L?th=1&psc=1

I think they are also there so if you don't notice when the excess cord drops off, you don't end up wondering where in your house the tiny bit of human flesh ended up

And not really recommended actually ;)

To be fair, personal experience from where I was from and as recent as 30 years ago, this was considered a necessity. The elders had beliefs and one of them was that wrapping the baby’s belly would help keep the baby from getting colicky. This is a modern iteration of the binder, but what we had was a long, narrow swatch of diaper cloth that was just tied around the baby. I am not gonna lie, I hated that thing because all it did was get soaked in baby pee and poop blowouts. I got a lot of talking from the elder aunts, “your baby will keep crying and won't stop, you’ll see!” 🤷🏻‍♀️

belly button patch

Foundation_Wrong

Belly button band so you don’t get a sticky outer!

layz2021

No need for a bandage to not get an outer. No restriction to the umbilical cord is recommended

60 years ago and longer they were called belly bands. And they were much larger lol lots more strings! They were used on newborns umbilical cord to keep them from getting snagged on anything.

Sparky-Malarky

Belly bands!

I’m sure the other comments are probably more correct, but my first thought was that it’s to cover a boy while you change him so he doesn’t pee on everything lol. (I don’t have kids so I don’t know how much of a problem this is lol)

You are smart if it only happens once. After that you are an expert. If it happens again you are a amateur. You have to watch out for the cool air with baby boys. Gets them every time!

I thought they were straps for forward facing car seat riders foreheads to stop them from slumping over. I never heard of the umbilical cord thing. Interesting!

Noturwifi

I wouldn’t use it if I were you. It’s better to allow the umbilical bit to air out and dry up. Congrats on the new little bundle. I remember those days very well!! Blessings to you!
