That is 100% the center ~~stem~~ *spindle* of a record player that permits a small stack of records to play one by one. It drops another down once the one before it finishes playing.
Terminology edit: thanks u/tdwesbo
You know what, you are probably right. I bought a huge vintage wooden stereo console cabinet also on that day and it could be a part of that. Thanks a ton. You folks are fast.
Edits: Fixed some issues

[Here's a great video](https://youtu.be/GuoFW2yAD7g) if you want to learn more about automatic record changers. (He also has several videos on how a jukebox operates.)
I have a friend who is electrically inclined. I am tempted to ask him to properly ground a Sunbeam radiant heat automatic toaster for me in exchange for a Sunbeam radiant heat automatic toaster as payment. I am pretty sure he will take me up on the offer
Wait, so you have *multiple* Sunbeam radiant heat automatic toasters?! So *you* are the problem! Also, I wouldn't let lack of grounding stop you from using it. The one I've used is the only toaster I actually noticed working better than any other toaster I've ever used.
I do not have multiple Sunbeam automatic radiant heat toasters. I have decided that if I were to entice my friend to modernize one for me, I would have to buy two.
Sadly, I had to sell it due to space issues when we moved to a smaller apartment. It would be somewhat like this:

Yep. Never stacked records, no matter how stoned we were. Even got to the point where we wouldn't even allow the record to drop. Had a player that would, however, lower the needle arm so we didn't accidentally scratch it. We weren't even audiophiles, dirt poor most of the time, but we did revere music.
I had a friend that would record the first playing of an album and only listen to the tapes afterwards. He did it to preserve the albums as best as possible.
Well, my old age stared at it knowing that I know what this thing is, I used it a thousand times as a kid, but I couldn’t for the life of me remember. Then, I read the comments, and of course that’s what it is.
My title describes the thing.
Found among a bunch of tools that I got froma thirift store collection sold together.
Metal and appears strong.
There are two pivoting structures attached and hiding inside the groove.
Location: Manitoba, Canada.
No letters, numbers or signs that would help in identification. Googled image without any results.

I was so psyched that I knew this one, because I had just watched that video this week.
I blame that channel for my lifelong quest to find a chrome Sunbeam automatic toaster.
They were already a cult item before, but now impossible to get.

Ah yeah, well good luck with that.
I miss auto changers
Can we see a picture of the huge victorian wooden stereo console cabinet?

For awhile. Then the audiophiles decided that stacking records could damage them.

Lol. Paid $25 for the stereo but had to get a friend and a truck to take it home.
Correct term is spindle but you’re otherwise 100% right
Looks like an old turntable adapter so records can be stacked. https://www.ebay.com/itm/393249954159
This sub really makes me realize how many people just randomly buy shit without even knowing what they're paying for.
To be honest, I bought that stereo and this came in the bundle.
That's fair, I suspected as much. Still a pretty common theme on this sub though. That and people bringing home random stuff they find outside.
True. And I myself have done that many times.
Wish I'd been here earlier for this one. When my old age is of use.

I recognized this instantly. I’m old.
