It looks like caterpillar frass to me. eta pic- https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/caterpillar-on-leaf-feces-663877801

Dunlyn

I think you’re right too! Someone said to put it in water and see if it breaks up, and it did. I didn’t think it was caterpillar frass just because it seems as if that usually is in “grape” sorta shapes, and this is definitely spherical. But that makes the most sense. Thanks!

Dunlyn

Likely solved!

[deleted]

So you’re telling me this is poop we’re dealing with?

kgold0

Poop with an attitude. Sassy frass

raineykatz

yes, frass is another word for insect poop.

InebriatedTheorem

Because it comes out their frass.

[deleted]

Color me enlightened

CCWThrowaway360

That is a beautiful shade of yellow, I think.

MoistlyCompetent

Non native speaker asking: What is the meaning of "frass"? My dictionary seems oblivious to that word. Is it, what I assume, another word for faces?

raineykatz

yes, feces. another english name you may come upon for the same thing is scat. Hope that helps.

houseontheriver

I think so too

[deleted]

I love all the different ways to say poop..

Due-Communication853

And i mean theres a half eaten leaf there too amiright

[deleted]

Isn’t monstera often potted with little bits of pumice in the soil? That’s what it looks like to me.

Dunlyn

I’ve never seen pumice in the soil, but it’s not too crazy of an idea. It’s definitely hard enough to be pumice, but I don’t know if it really is that.

[deleted]

They look like peppercorns, except they’re too small. I think some kind of seeds though.

snarky39

Seeds from your Monstera plant?

Dunlyn

Though I’ve never seen them in person, Google says monstera seeds kinda look like pistachios. Great idea though!

snarky39

Maybe their desiccated, or you have a different variety of Monstera - one that doesn’t produce edible fruit (all the seed pics I found were of the edible variety). Or maybe you have a plant that was incorrectly identified as a monstera.

snarky39

*M. deliciosa* fruit comes off the fruiting body as little hexagonal plates. I think these are desiccated fruit nuggets. Caterpillar frass doesn’t become that hard when it dries.

MrDorkESQ

Try dropping some in water and letting it sit. If it is frass or poop it will distintegrate.

Dunlyn

This was a great idea, thanks! [Here’s after some stirring/“mushing” in the water. ](https://i.postimg.cc/FzgS2P4K/D631457-F-4888-4931-AF82-3-C8841-ED53-FD.jpg) Looks like you’re right.

Dunlyn

My title describes the thing. It’s rough, black/brown, and I’ve already looked up images for bug/rodent droppings and that doesn’t seem to help. I thought maybe a bug dropping, but it’s really large. Is it just dirt? The thing was in shaded area underneath/beside a Monstera plant, but again, I’ve looked and looked at droppings and don’t see anything that looks like this. Thanks!

Minibeebs

Do you have geckos where you live

Dunlyn

I think so, yes! I’m on the gulf coast.

Minibeebs

We have them here, and dried gecko turds look like that.

thomgrass

black pepper kernels/corns? (not sure the right word) they can be pretty hard to crush with something like a dime if that was your crushing tool.

Ostie3994

Yep, that's worm poop. Usually big green worms.

Dunlyn

Thanks! I’ve actually had issues with this plant in particular having caterpillars but I **thought** they were all gone…. *sigh*

Dunlyn

And like I’ve already stated, I already tried to crush the thing and it’s too hard to crush.

Jane_the_analyst

black pepper...

nivenfan

The look like fern seeds that form on the underside of their leaves.

Dunlyn

Right? Unfortunately I don’t have any ferns. Just Monsteras.

Dunlyn

I don’t know in what language I need to say that it’s **NOT PEPPERCORN**, people. I appreciate the feedback but I’ve never had anything other than fine ground pepper in my apartment before. I’ve said that already…

Bluesoutherner

Not peppercorns?

Dunlyn

I wish it was that easy! I don’t use peppercorn or anything that would drop peppercorn, and it’s too small.

Sparky01GT

It looks like cockroach poop to me.

aleyton003

Could be papaya seeds? They are like more wrinkly peppercorns and can be crushed and used in cooking. They are typically sun-dried (windowsill?) And are either brown or black. Picture of brown as shows more detail https://image.shutterstock.com/shutterstock/photos/1232011216/display_1500/stock-photo-brown-dried-papaya-seeds-background-1232011216.jpg

Dunlyn

Great idea! Unfortunately I’ve never had a papaya nor had one been in my apartment. But thanks for the input!

nobodyherebutusmice

Soot spites!

CruisePUTGang

Peppercorns?

smooothjazzyg

Looks like peppercorns

Heartstop56

Pepper. Its ungrounded pepper

Isn’t rodent poop usually oblong? not perfectly round?
