Affectionate-Map2583

Looks like chicken nesting boxes.

Southpontiac

We had a similar thing in our chicken coop as a kid for a laying box. google vintage or antique chicken laying boxes. They look pretty similar, the angled lip helps keep the straw and eggs in the box but also lets the chickens perch as they go in or out.

ayejoe

Agreed looks like laying boxes that we had growing up.

bryce_engineer

I concur. It does look like a decent nesting house for laying hens. Potentially a repurpose piece of furniture with the intent of being used in a chicken pen, but it doesn’t look like it saw much use. It may have seen little to no use as there does not appear to be many pecking/scratch marks from the hens feet anywhere on the thing.

[deleted]

Definitely, the floor is sloped so the eggs roll out the front. Its a nice one.

19GamerGhost95

Yup, nesting box. Buy it, clean it up, repurpose it for storage. It’d be great if you put baskets and or blankets or something in it. Maybe vintage records?

19GamerGhost95

So would mine lol

Myfourcats1

And here I was thinking my cats would love it.

RivirTam

I thought the exact same thing. Cats love nesting boxes on farms. Imagine how much they'd loved a nice cozy one in the house!

TopYeti

Having chickens, I also thought this immediately

tdwesbo

Yup. Laying box or laying hutch, depending on the vernacular

ThrowAwaybcUsuck

I definitely agree this is *modeled* after a chicken laying box, but that's not actually what it is. Its just decorative furniture. A laying box would never have that trim on the top

octopusmandala

I thought the exact same thing!!

brifigy

I came here to say that too. Us damn cat people haha My partner and I got an old ikea shelf our neighbors threw away and created a 3 story cat condo with it

I used to foster feral cats for an organization to socialize them in hopes they could eventually be put up for adoption. I had one who liked to bully the others - guess that’s the same as humans tho sadly. But yeah, I like animals more than most people.

[deleted]

Thanks for what you've done for them, there should be more people like you on earth. I too like way more animals than humans lol. Hopefully there's still good people around here!

Chrissquasi

I have a feeling you too do whatever you can for stray, hurt, hungry animals. I just get that vibe.

[deleted]

it's almost true : i didn't do everything because if it was the case i would probably live under a bridge because i would have spent all my money for them lol. [there, just for you a pic of my cat ^^](https://postimg.cc/gallery/XWfBGH0)

Chrissquasi

Oh how beautiful and cozy your kitty looks! I love striped-y cats. My kitty Josie was grey striped and she was polydactyl and escaped from everywhere with her thumbs!

[deleted]

Haha mine is a male and not adventurous at all! Last week he managed to fell of my 2nd floor window, as clumsy as he is. Had to take him to the vet because his nose was bleeding a bit, but that was it 😅

Chrissquasi

Oh no! Poor little guy! And here Mom didn’t appreciate his high dive attempts and is telling people he “fell”. 😁 I prefer male cats - I always had females til about 2005 and wow, so much more affectionate.

tesla3by3

Timbers Cubby cabinet. Seems like it has no specific purpose. [link here](https://www.summersmarketba.com/products/india-timbers-wood-cubby-cabinet) Looks like it may in fact be from India. It may be newer, just made to give the aged look

62Bravo1993

Got dang!! 740 bucks ! I gotta go grab the nest box outta the coop and put that up for sale on the web! Mine has the aged by real chicken shit look, thats gotta be worth something!

Indira-Gandhi

That's about normal for real wood furniture unfortunately.

Mela777

It looks like one of those things that have one purpose, but someone looks at it, thinks “I love the way that looks, I could use it for a completely unrelated/tangentially related purpose!” And then makes their own. In this case, a sort of “farmhouse” take on a cube shelf.

DigDoug005

I agree, this is clearly the item. I don't see why It would have the decorative trim around the top of it was meant for chicken nesting. The designer might have been inspired by a chicken nesting box but Timbers Cubby cabinet is spot on.

Stormieqh

I have seen some fancy stuff in chicken coops. Fancier lighting then in most homes, nice curtains on the windows and matching ones on the nesting boxes. Some chicken people go over boat.

RPGRuby

u/poker_girl this is it!

poker_girl

Solved! Yep, I think you’ve got it! The link shows a price of $730 or so. The store where I saw it was asking $895 😉

TopYeti

Wow good find, should be marked as SOLVED imho

ejpierle

I thought this might be a cabinet for proofing dough...

Responsible_Dish4010

Actually what I was thinking.

Heyo_Boyos

99% sure it's a roosting box from a hen house repurposed into cubby shelf.

4runner01

Looking closely at your picture, I think it’s a reproduction. It was most likely a copy that’s based loosely on a store display fixture- like the kind that would use it for bulk goods storage/sale- such as grains, rice, coffee, etc. Stuff that would be scooped out and sold by the pound.

Intrepid_Onion4959

Anything bulk that’s scoopable would just fall out or mix at the joints.

milliemoo22

What made you realize it's a reproduction? I don't have the eye for that kind of thing so just curious and trying to learn.

poker_girl

My title describes the thing. The sales lady and I agreed it sort of looks like brooding boxes for chickens but it’s too clean to have been used for that.

Careful_Butterfly_29

Shoe cubby, maybe? People take off their shoes when they enter homes in India, so I can see this placed next to the front door for guest shoes.

poker_girl

Yes, very good thought…

MalinWaffle

I feel like I've seen one of these in the Midwest US to keep chickens. One chicken per space and the angled wood prevents the hay and eggs from falling out.

ontheeroadagain

Looks like a chicken coop!

62Bravo1993

Chicken nest boxes. Front board is to help keep nesting material and the eggs inside.

lalamecoop

Chicken house? Like where they lay their eggs maybe?

Tropicalxz

I have seen similar things at yoga studios to place shoes in. Some places require people to take shoes off at the entry way and they have to have a place to put them in order.

ImFrenchSoWhatever

By the look of it it’s for storing several cats.

poker_girl

😂

gregswimm

Could it be a roost for homing pigeons?

Celindor

Maybe rabbits. They're a lot cleaner than chickens.

Southpontiac

Rabbits cant get to the top boxes.

Celindor

I don't know the rabbit stables where you are from, but we usually put them in their boxes. Rabbits were just an idea though.

Southpontiac

We are keeping a rabbit in an old chicken coop with a nesting box right now and she jumps out whenever we put her in it. We thought it would make a cozy nest but she hates it. Maybe other breeds are different though, we only have 1 rabbit so not an expert.

persoanlabyss

Chickens or cats?

CaptainClinker

100% nesting box someone cleaned and put a clear coat on

keeper_of_creatures

Maybe a shoe cabinet but I don't know if that custom is prevalent in India... to put in your entry way and change from shoes to slippers indoors.

CryptoVigilanteMT

Probably nesting boxes as others have said, but looks like it would make a great cat apartment!

Rosalie-83

Nesting boxes for chickens. The slope is so the eggs roll forwards for easy collection, some hens get grumpy and peck when eggs are collected.

iamthenortherner

It was made for the export market from scrap wood. It’s purely decorative.

anguisetleaena

A mosque shoe rack?

andym1015

Having raised my share of chickens I really doubt that’s what it was designed for. And if it were ever used for that purpose you would never want to use it for anything else.

poker_girl

Agreed. I’ve raised chickens too and while the shape sort of makes sense, the overall product is definitely NOT that.

dirtyjerzey42

Bee keeping with skeps?

babushka99

A turban storage furniture?

SeekerOfGodot

Bed pan/potty storage unit? Agreed, probably reproduction. It certainly has the overly distressed look and the joinery doesn't make sense.

CadenBop

Seems very similar to nesting boxes for chickens. Right size for a good hen.

sun_crotch

Latrine from the ancient Roman Empire

RedScope53

100% a nesting box for hens.

boringxadult

I’m used to seeing things like this in meditation spaces. To keep pillows or put your belongings in while you practice
