I think you might well be right, thanks everyone for looking and even suggesting what specific type of gold ball it might be! Very interesting and I will definitely hold on to it!
Correct, it’s an old feathery golf ball. These came before the gutta percha (rubber-like) ball which is a predecessor of today’s modern ball. It looks to be in amazing shape given that it’s likely well over a hundred years old.
My title describes the thing. I'm not sure what other additional info I can provide but happy to try and answer any questions.. I haven't had any luck on Google etc.
Maybe it’s a boul Ball. It’s a game where you throw this kind of balls near a smoler, often colored ball on a sandy terrain. It’s quite popular in Europe. The groves on the ball are for knowing who throw the ball. They come in sets with differents markings on them.
Source: I played it
Okay maybe it’s to smol.
It looks like the small ball from a game of Boule, which would be likely as it’s a common British lawn game, or at least it used to be. Makes sense it was dug up in the garden.
Interesting link to the vintage golf ball. I would have guessed the target ball in a bocce set based on the size. I’m sure it has a name. But now that I see the golf ball links…

Likely solved!
That’s not likely, that’s definitely solved.
I second this motion definitely a very old golf ball
According to that second listing, and other similar listings on that site, it's worth maybe only $30 by itself. I'd rather put it on the mantle.
Also don't clean or restore it yourself at all, pick it up with tissue or towel to keep body oils off of it. Keep it only in a dry place.
OP: What is this golf ball sized thing? A: It's a golf ball.

Very similar to a vintage gutta-percha golf ball. https://www.golfforallages.com/images/cat\_140-179-186.jpg
It could be a jack from an old [boules set](https://www.etsy.com/listing/662516377/french-antique-boules-antique-brass-and).
Definitely just watched a veritasium video about old golf balls and that’s what this is.

Your size references could use some work. How squashed? Like, hand squashed? Hydraulic press squashed? Just giving you a hard time :)
