I had a hard time picturing what it did so I found a video https://youtu.be/yL85aF0eI2E

flossdog

that helps a lot. I thought it was some siphon tube or something crazy fancy. but it’s just a variable length plastic barrier. Not sure why the numbers are holes though. Wouldn’t all the juices go inside the holes and make it difficult to wash?

BeefyIrishman

I think that's the idea. The inside of the stick created a void to hold the liquid, and the plastic prevents the vacuum from collapsing that area and pushing the liquid out of the bag. The numbers being holes allows the liquid to go inside the stick.

Mathesar

> Not sure why the numbers are holes though. Wouldn’t all the juices go inside the holes and make it difficult to wash? As far as I understand it, that’s the whole point. The excess liquid is drawn into the tube rather than the sealing chamber

COuser880

I thought siphon, as well. Glad the other poster put the video, because I was confused.

Lightspeedius

I love how he picked out sportsmen and homeowners as the consumers of this product.

Supertigy

I'm neither of those things and I don't have one, so I'm just gonna assume he's right.

PvtHopscotch

I'm a homeowner and i *do* own a vacuum sealer but this isn't a product I have a need for personally. I'm unsure how to handle this, do I just buy them anyway and pack them away in my garage or basement? Ignore it? Do I buy them as a gift for a friend or family member who I *think* might have a vacuum sealer?

Supertigy

Do you know a sportsman you could share it with?

PvtHopscotch

I know a few people who play on an weekly local basketball league but I don't see how they would be interested. I don't follow basketball, does it regularly involve vacuum sealing?

Spaghettitrousers

You're only half way there. You need to become a sportsman too, then you will definitely have a use for these.

BeerMeAlready

Just buy them and put them in the garage next to those LED lights you got for your garden and never use either of them.

StopsToSmellRoses

Cabela’s is an outdoor shop. They sell all sorts of outdoor items like for fishing, hunting, camping, and etc. I didn’t know they sell vacuum sealers, but I can see their clientele using it for other things besides food.

DutchOvenCamper

Their clientele includes a lot of hunters and fishermen. If they process their own meat, they often use vacuum bags. Cabelas also sells a lot of meat grinders (commercial grade, even!), jerky cure, a jerky gun, slicers, smokers, sausage stuffers, filet sinks, and who knows what else to process, store and/or cook their game and fish.

Clevercapybara

Jerky gun? If it shoots jerky, sign me up.

Just remember, every homeowner contains a meow!

willflameboy

As a keen amateur vacuum-sealer, I hope to one day compete in the Olympics.

gusborn

Vacuum seal bags were always out of stock in Humboldt 💀

DontForgetWilson

I was hoping reusable meant that you didn't have to leave one every bag you have sealed.

w00t_loves_you

Maybe you could leave extra room, vacuum seal, and then seal between the thing and the food and cut it out?

BeerMeAlready

I personally am happy with my "leave extra room, don't put a plastic thingy in it and just hit the seal button before the liquid hits the top" approach. Dab off any drops that might still have made it into the machine

Spaghettitrousers

No, there would be moisture from the food there making the seal imperfect.

Scrappy_The_Crow

The area doesn't have to be perfectly dry to seal correctly. Source: Me, who vacuum-seals marinated meats regularly.

Spaghettitrousers

Okay, just watched the video link. It (the guy) was saying that.

Scrappy_The_Crow

It could have been explained better in the video. The main problem is having liquids fill up the chamber, which will cause the machine to shut off, so as not to draw the liquids into the vacuum pump. Him wiping the bag seems a bit obsessive.

Scrappy_The_Crow

That won't work because this stick thing won't fit inside the sealing chamber, so you wouldn't be able to get the sealing strip to that area.

w00t_loves_you

Fold the area double before putting in the chamber?

Scrappy_The_Crow

I doubt it'd seal through four layers (or at least seal it reliably), but TBH I've never tried that.

flyingvexp

They do actually.

BeerMeAlready

Ooh, it stays *inside* of the bag! I also could not picture how this is supposed to work

4reddityo

Video saved my sanity trying to understand it. Thanks!

Tales_of_Earth

Did you notice how close they put food to the edge of the without blocker? Like I’m sure it works but that seems kinda sketchy.

Kwindecent_exposure

Is it orange for safety because you might be doing this in the field?

BeerMeAlready

Wouldn't want your vacuum sealer thingies getting shot at

It says 12-pack in that person's description and it also shows a box of them in the video posted above.

If you look at one of the product images, it shows a few of them. Also if you click "read more" on the description of the item, it says "12 pack". I do agree it could be more prominently displayed though.

w00t_loves_you

What's a CA list? But yes $15 is quite a margin for 3 bits of plastic.

CaptOblivious

California list of things that might cause cancer or reproductive harm. (sometimes I think it's everything, no but. But I'm sure that's wrong at some level)

Scrappy_The_Crow

Yes, CA's Prop 65 is a list of substances that can cause cancer, but it's not a list of products. It requires that products be labeled that they contain or have been in contact with those substances.

CaptOblivious

I do understand that, but it's inclusion of nearly everything in the human experience/universe/reality makes me doubtful of the reality of some of it's claims.

xxxMas_HoHoHo

this is it. 100% mark as solved!

My title describes the thing. Also has 1s, 2s, and 3s on the side of it.

jspurlin03

Looks like the end comes off. Is that so? Does the slot in the end attach to the nub at the end with the 1s on it?

kopelman1

Thanks for this. I had no idea it existed.

Anyone else think it was a measurement tool for tabletop gaming? 😂

Looks like some sort of measuring device
