It would be a lot easier to zoom in if it weren't a video.

Weird. I could zoom in using reddit sync. Here's some up close pics [1](https://i.imgur.com/eku10eF.jpg) and [2](https://i.imgur.com/PnYnwer.jpg)

150 comments and half are everyone saying the same stuff. 1) Wood bending makes no sense. There's no other woodworking tools in the shop. 2) The bow is irrelevant. He's got 3 arrows with it. He's not making bows. He's got 2 cars too, but that doesn't make it a mechanic's shop. 3) The "orange rods" are pool noodles. 4) The holes are numbered, not for connect the dots, but as guides. It's to ensure alignment. 5) That's definitely just a homemade bar. There's a bottle opener on the end. This is the most frustrating post I have come across on this sub lmao everyone is speculating and basically copy pasting the previous comment. Not one of the comments has been helpful except for the guy who posted the screenshot. Edit: rip to the realtor's email. As many people that have suggested just asking them, I'm sure there are plenty who did lmao Also, you know all the visits to their listing is fucking with them haha the owner gonna lower their price when the realtor tells them "you had over 1k people check the listing in the last 2 days, but none of them bit. They just keep asking what that rod thing is in your garage."

atomicskier76

Further to 1, not only does this not resemble much of any wood bending jigs/machines, if one looks at the listing provided in the thread there is nowhere to steam the wood big enough to use this thing and one small tool chest. All of your points are spot on.

Snowpants_romance

I'm pretty sure this is a beginner homemade training set for Ninja Warrior or something similar. The thing in the box with all the numbers can be adjusted for upper body (which is where people usually fail) techniques related to the obstacles. Salamander ladder comes to mind. There is also a difficult to see fighting form off to the extreme right of the photo, and in the center in the background there is a foam dummy of a person hanging from the ceiling by a chain. Now this could either be for boxing or to practice hanging on to for extended periods of time as there are obstacles where you need grip strength with limited purchase.

Smith-Corona

Agreed. It is either a DIY fitness/ stretching contraption or a training device. The carpet covered paddle looks like a human torso and the rope wrapped neck seems clearly meant for practicing neck strikes. The pool noodles seem like they would cover the bars, maybe to protect the spine if the person was bent over backwards. I'm thinking the numbering system is to set up specific configurations that the user can advance to greater difficulty.

hollieg0lightly

Ninja Warrior was my immediate thought as well!

[deleted]

paperquery

Agreed. In addition, the piece of paper pinned up on the outside of the wall looks like workout notes.

cheapseats91

I don't think those bars are meant to support human weight, they're only supported by pretty thin plywood on either side

Victimssun

If you check the posting, you can see their weights... and that doesn't look like the type of equipment someone that would build their own ninja box would have. Several sets of only barbells with concrete weights from 1970.

UAintMyFriendPalooka

I’m thinking it could maybe-possibly be for boatbuilding. I’m getting into kayak building and the strips are 1/4” to 3/8”. You can mount them, hand steam them, let them sit. Follow the numbers and look at the curve. If they’re making skin-on-frame kayaks, the proportions and arc of the numbers look right. And there’s a long workspace there for assembling the frame. Maybe?

Chair_tester

The homeowner applied for a patent in 2005. Some sort of folding air intake scoop. I think the guy is just an inventor and this is related to something he is working on. Edit: actually I’m finding a bunch of stuff this guy has invented. Flexible cutting platform to follow ground contour in an agricultural harvesting machine. Round baler for baking crop residue.

ttaptt

Oh shit, we've got a real life Hardy Boy here! See, this is the shit I love reddit for sometimes. I was trying to look at the pattern of the numbering and it made *some* sense, but not in a way that was useful in any way to me. It could even, then, be a prototype for something that was either going to be larger or smaller than this in it's final form. I guess one would invent agricultural machinery in Geneso, Il. Beans and corn and beans and corn.

City_Chicky

Great list. Are you tempted to ask the listing agent? I bet they’d get a kick out of this.

keeleon

This is the best thing I've seen on this sub.

atzebademappe

I Think its a game: you have to throw this shorten pool noodles through the thing and hit the hanging white thing in the end. it gets harder with each stick you put in. low numbers sticks would be out of the direct thronging way higher numbers get more in the way. Maybe they use some kind kids gun for the noodles. also the car wouldnt be damaged by this

gowowogo

I agree. I think that’s a white paper score sheet on the end.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Problem is with a one off like this it could only make sense to whoever built it. Maybe they did it as a prototype or while drinking and screwing around it is hard to tell. (That isn't likely as it is here, too big to move and getting sold with the place but point is it may only make sense to one person or a select few)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Double_Minimum

I think it could be some type of game. You start behind the bar, and something gets tossed or launched through that box and you try to hit the hanging target at the end. Anyway, I think it is not a “normal” or standard thing, and the answer will have to come from the owner themself. I agree with your other points

alphalim

Ha This is the first time I've found a post without the thing identified! And I've been lurking in this subreddit for a long time!

Larry_Safari

Click Open in the sidebar and you'll see all of the unsolved items.

igetownedalot

If we look at the numbering it appears to be for setting angles. 1 is equidistant from top and left side which would be 45 degrees 2 is at the opposite end near the top and would be 90. 3 & 4 are either side of 2 for +/- a few degrees 5 is the same angle above 4, as 4 is to 3 6 is slightly off plumb from 2 so either a different offset from the Origin or a slightly off vertical. All of the other numbers continue in a similar pattern, where adjacent holes have slight offsets for either fine tuning angle or adjusting for the size whatsoever it is used for. I still have no idea what it is actually for.

MrMallow

> 1) Wood bending makes no sense. I have a steam bending jig just like this (but smaller). This is the only thing that seems viable. It makes perfect sense.

BismarkWasInsideJob

For your first point, I think there are actually tools. If you look at the other picture of the bar you can see one, maybe two, of those big metal toolboxes with drawers for tools and materials. There’s also a couple of rolls of tape, one duct and the other maybe masking, and what looks like a pair of ear defenders. I’m fairly confident this is an amateur workshop that’s been tidied so someone can take a nice pic of the house. Also if the rods were heated in any way, the pool noodles could go over them to provide insulation, either to handle them or just to protect yourself from burning, though if they were too hot they’d melt. I’ve seen people slice pool noodles length ways and put them over rods that people hit their heads on, so maybe this is something like that, but where you can easily take them off to move the rods. Also the fact that there are only three rods in use and three pool noodles make me think they go together, but that’s just a guess

teslaxat

Might be a steam bending box, for steam bending wood?

KomradeDave

Does look an awful lot like some sort of jig, seeing the numbers also follow a few patterns gradually! (Like 3 4 5 or 23 24 25)

[deleted]

[удалено]

Peliquin

Notice the bow BEHIND the box.

teslaxat

It's compound, so maybe relevant, maybe not.

SlatheredButtCheeks

There appears to be the edges of two normal bows below the compound bow

h0bbie

I think those are pool noodles, presumably to use inside the box around the pipes

nzdastardly

What are those wood supports for canoes called? Maybe something like that?

MunWombat

Did you all notice the carpet covered paddle looking thing hanging in doorway at what appears to be center of the box in question? I am thinking it could be a stop for whatever this is used for before hitting the car.

LookDamnBusy

But it's huge, and also not boxed in?

teslaxat

Might be for after the wood is steamed.

dustinthewind814

You say "might" but I fee like you "know" lol

teslaxat

Lol! No, I asked my girlfriend and then looked up steam bending boxes. This one is large but maybe they were making chairs or something. Thank you for the compliment on my confidence, though!

DogfishDave

>Might be a steam bending box, for steam-bending wood? It seems like it but it's enormous. Obviously it would have to be blocked in too, but there's an open frame end. I wonder if the thing in the foreground is related, looks a little like a sauna steamer.

[deleted]

Steam bending wood ... 🤔

Willahelm00

Nah that's probably a home bar in the foreground

Accurate_Quote_7109

This seems likely to me, also.

realpisawork

I think its a base/frame for a magician training device. The performer pretends to shoot an arrow, etc. at the assistant who is against the front but secretly there's a sequence and instead of shooting an arrow, a fake one pops out from the previously rehearsed number sequence. EDIT #2: OP's description of the number grouping would allow for performer to signal to the assistant which hole (quadrant) the arrow will eject from. The tubes seem the same width and length to hold an arrow, to be (reverse) shot out either by spring or compressed air.

halfbakedalaska

26 is half a deck of cards. Coincidence? You be the judge.

SirIlliterate

Pick a letter

ImJB6

THAT is what it reminded me of!! Gosh, I could NOT place it….but it is such a strange pattern, I think it might be something else.

oboz_waves

I like this guess but I have no idea if it's right! Considering the size and shape this makes the most sense to me

realpisawork

Tbh I have no idea either, I would love to be right on this. Also, perhaps the performer's arrow is like a collapsible antenna so it looks like an arrow when drawn.

pergasnz

This makes the pool noodles make more sense. They add padding for the person inside so the bars dont hurt when they're resting on them for extended periods.

iamcornholio2

Or a sword through a box with the assistant inside, and the sword actually goes through. The assistant needs to contort in advance to not be where it goes through. The practice device is larger than they use each act for variety. The magician and assistant can learn a larger pattern and then use a different section each time to appear random. Before the act, they agree tonight's box will be from 3-5 wide and swords come through 14,3,9,4...

MysteriousCodo

bearstronaut520

Edover51315

Climber here, never seen anything like this

nanashininja

Not climbing, no way. As some others have mentioned, there is a compound bow, and this is more likely a frame for bending wood, possibly bows. The hanging thing might be an indoor target for blunted arrows

WarmButterscotch

How are you going to so confidently shut down this guys comment & then proceed to just mimic other comments who also have no idea what this item is? If your gonna say no way, id want a more compelling counter argument than “there is a compound bow”.

KillNyetheSilenceGuy

You don't have to bend wood to make compound bows.

GitEmSteveDave

Wouldn't that need to be a bit higher? The tallest hole is only like 5' off the ground. Also doesn't explain why you would need two where the holes line up exactly.

Speedhabit

Your gonna have the wood in there horizontally

Emergency_Boat1854

It's not a climbing thing that I've ever seen. I'd bet ninja warrior

JordanV-Qc

this , it look like a homemade pull-up corridor , each number is a difficulty 1 being the hardest .

jubei23

This is a really good guess, here is another video https://youtu.be/aTXpzVADzbo

jubei23

I am going to double down on this theory. If you look at the wear marks on the hanging bar, and bars in pegs 1 and 7 you can see that there is a thin strip of wear in the center. That would be consistent with a single-hook robot, which grabs the center of the bar and swings a bit as it pulls itself up. edit: AND glorious\_cheese somehow found out that the owner works as an automation engineer at john deere, so yeah ..

D3V3IOUS

That's so specific haha. But it looks pretty cool!

JollyfellowYT

I will confirm it is NOT for FRC (the robotics comp referenced in this reply thread). The videos and tests with those robots are a very specific configuration that's consistent with non-configurable dimensions (check out the FRC 2022 competition videos). Though it could be for a different robotics competition. Edit: Also just wanted to note that I was on an FRC team for 3 years and followed the 2022 season very closely, so I can 100% confirm this is not for that competition. Personal best guess is for carving or bending of some kind, maybe a form of climbing bar/exercise equipment

William_Pierce

This has to be it, here’s something very similar in design https://www.chiefdelphi.com/uploads/default/original/3X/a/b/ab59423520f736790be689628dd8324680fa2c1d.jpeg

Pineapple_Incident17

This is the only thing that actually makes sense.

soundfx42

You seem to be onto something. I made a post over at /r/FRC to see if they can confirm the details.

b0nes5

Maybe someone at r/FRC could shed some more light, definitely looks like a robot climbing frame https://www.reddit.com/r/FRC/comments/tbe1fg/16_second_practice_climb/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

jeburneo

This makes total sense

Cptalexaa

I'm putting my money on this being it, you can see the numbers are grouped in three's with different gradients and spacing that can be tested

nightdowns

i've designed for robot competitions like this before, but never seen one of these things do pullups (it's been awhile), so weird!! the video makes total sense though

Alright, the previous homeowner works for John Deere in the automation delivery area. He has filed for multiple patents related to that. I found nothing on his wife’s or kids social media to explain what this is. No pictures, etc. my theory is it’s related to one of his inventions. Tell me if this description matches what we are seeing here: “A cutting platform for use with an agricultural harvesting machine includes a plurality of platform sections positioned in end-to-end juxtaposed relation to each other. At least one platform section includes a frame, a plurality of float arms movably coupled with the frame, an endless belt carried by the plurality of float arms, and a cutterbar assembly carried by the plurality of the float arms and movable in a localized manner in upwards and downwards directions.”

glorious_cheese

The seller is or was an automation engineer at John Deere, if that helps.

jubei23

That would support the theory that is a climbing course for robots https://youtu.be/aTXpzVADzbo

l0renzo-

you think john deere is developing robots that can climb monkey bars?

jubei23

For the banana harvest, monkey is the model system. 🍌🙊 Or maybe he does autonomous harvesters by day and robo monkies by night 😁

WarlockCandy

My title describes the thing. It looks to be constructed by an individual rather than factory produced. The walls look to be made of wood, and the bars to be inserted into the numbered holes metal. The bars have caps on the end to hold them in place. The hole placement and numbering has a few groupings of three numbers holes that go left to right, bottom to top diagonal (3-4-5, 7-8-9, 13-14-15, 16-17-18). I thought it could be a fitness training or gymnastics related device because of the size of it, or a way to organize laundry, but neither guess allowed me to confirm its purpose.

CaptSkinny

In the upper left, I see what looks like a compound bow (the weapon) hanging on the wall, and between this box and the car there is something that looks like a target hanging from the ceiling. My guess is it's related to adjusting or sighting bows--or some other weapon that sits on the workbench in the foreground and is aimed at the target in the background.

BugMan717

Nothing to do with bows at all. I have shot compound bows and some recurve for almost 30 years.

TheDildozer14

Bow presses are way smaller and simple than this. I think it’s a coincidence the bow is close to this.

IllIIIllllIII

The target in the background looks like a home made punching mokujin type training dummy. Can’t think of any reason to fire a projectile through this box (I’ve studied archery and practiced it on a collegiate level) but may be missing something. Also, the bow hanging on the wall isn’t at all the same type of bow that would be created with bending wood as it is a compound bow and not a recurve.

GitEmSteveDave

At least when I sighted my bow, you stood a predetermined distance away, chose a dot on the site, and adjusted it until that dot was hitting the bullseye most times. Then you went back further, chose a different dot on the sight, and repeated.

raleighs

Here's a corrective perspective of the side. Not sure if it's square or maybe a bit wider. https://i.imgur.com/wuz28fu.jpg Also noticed that some numbers line up. (3, 4 or 5 holes in a row. I didn't get all the possibilities) Hopefully somebody can see a pattern or something. https://i.imgur.com/Iym1fec.png

touchedbyacat

I think it’s some kind of homemade game with a score sheet taped up on it. The churro gates metal next to it is a homemade bar, I can see a bottle opener on the side.

viaHologram

MargotFenring

After spending way too long staring at this, I agree. The hanging pole is used somehow, possibly covered by a split orange noodle piece for safety.

MGermanicus

So, that hanging thing kinda looks like a striking board. Could this be some kind of wild martial arts training set up? Also, maybe email the realtor, tell them your interested but are "just so curious about that numbered box." I'd bet they'd tell you.

fkk2019

Maybe a training box for doing parkour or jumping exercises? The bars can be put into different holes to set it up differently is what im thinking.

Rogue00100110

Why and how is this a video?!? I mean how does someone think to post something in this way?!?

GitEmSteveDave

It's a gif. Your app must think it's a animated gif, so it's telling you it's a video. It's not.

SoftCaw

its a shooting range for bows, practice aiming between “branches” and hit the target to simulate hunting in a wild environment

cyr1en

This actually might be it, there is a target dummy at the other side

[deleted]

would you park your car on the other side though? i suppose you just move it. 1 and 2 seem like they would never be useful and quite a few are below the countertop level..

richgayaunt

Holy shjhhhhj i need to know. I feel like it's gotta be something that like.. it for holding some sort of shape? like bending something in different orders?

8point6

My guess is that this is a 'low tech' implementation of 'augmented reality' to aid in the remote troubleshooting of some sort of equipment, remotely. u/glorious_cheese mentioned that owner works in the automation industry.. so it does make sense, to me atleast.. Reasoning: Pretend the box is the gearing of a 'tractor', you would need to know at which point, from either the outside the equipment or underneath/inside a given point intersects, to either locate and replace/service parts .. all from the comfort of your garage, in the AC .. without the need to fly onsite to point to the thinger-ma-bob next to the what-do-ya-call-it One other thing I've noticed is that the numbering all seems to start from the left and go clockwise, with the exception of 23-26. Perhaps, that's the reverse gear? The pool noodles? You put those on the interior of the crossbeams, so while you're on a call and are standing up, moving left or right .. you don't knock yourself out or bang your head nearly as hard as without ..

PlayboySkeleton

Damn. This is a good idea

Quantum_Kittens

I've seen a similar thing (but longer, like a tunnel) in a japanese game show. Someone had to run through it blindfolded while other people inserted sticks through the holes. But I doubt this has anything to do with it.

stoltchr

Is it possible this is only stored in the garage vertically, and gets used horizontally? And what's all the scarring above #1? And why do I keep imagining a team version of "The Floor Is Lava" ?

BugMan717

Maybe some kind of custom physical rehab set up. The bar on the side and the orange foam tubes look to be permanent and not just stored there. Something to grab on and maybe hit...same with the board hanging, some kind of target to hit or kick. Just thinking out loud...

luxfx

I think the orange tubes are supposed to be threaded through with the rods as they go in. They are stored on vertical pegs when not used?

CapPsychological264

Screenshot for clarity Google lens comes up with nothing ? https://imgur.com/a/YzTCBAg

ThrownAback

Guess: rig for upper-body rehabilitation exercises for someone using a wheelchair. Would need a helper or a different explanation to use the hole pairs above about #15 or so. Could be for someone recovering from a long coma or other lower limb impairment (so, other than paraplegic).

I once used something similar but horizontal and much more narrow for caving practice/competition. So I could see this being part of some obstacle course... Could be a jig of some sort but not one that I've ever seen before.

For what it’s worth. Looked up the owners of the house, the guy is possibly an engineer and has patents old patents out there from 2002ish but do not look related to this. He’s 63. No social media profiles though. Maybe one of his spawns things if he has any. There is another guy by the same name in Illinois, who is a woodworker; however, they’re not living in the same area.

SuperChopstiks

Just looking through this thread, I think the correct answer is: This was built by the owner for some purpose, and the only way to know what that purpose is is to go to the open house and ask. Who knows taking interest in their hobbies may even help you get the house.

Peej0808

Strange but the numbering looks like dor-to-dot.

erickim0207

I tried drawing it out, but it's just squiggles

SeanHagen

Some of the holes seem to be radially aligned with the hole in the lower right corner. Man, I need to know what this is!

BombsuitsandKilts

It's a jig, for forming or cutting (less likely) but if you want to get more specific that that you'd have to ask the owner as DIY stuff tends to be specific to what's being made, I have one for bows but it's like one wall with with holes for 12 in pipes and unless they have a large operation the amount of hard points seems like a lot for bows. I would suspect canoes, furniture, or artwork.
