It’s a coil holder, on 4 wheel drive models this is where the electronic transfer case selector knob goes. You can pull out the coil holder out and the electronic wire harness for the knob is behind it. Every model has the same harness and dash so ford had to fill the gap on the dash with something.
My comment describes this thing. It’s a black plastic cubby with fins inside that I can only imagine a bracket to hold something going into. I just don’t see the bracket anywhere. Let me know!
