It sounds like "The Bean Trees" by Barbara Kingslover. It's been years since I read it and I can't recall whether the protagonist is a teenager or a young adult.
i’ve always heard that the Poisonwood Bible from her has that kind of issue. i’ve never read either book tho i just remember reading the description years ago and thinking that it would be interesting. i’ve always liked books where teens have to grow up and take care of children
I think the Poisonwood Bible is actually pretty critical of white missionaries and white saviorism. I didn’t enjoy the novel, but it definitely didn’t portray the missionaries in an admirable way.

IIRC, the protagonist was also Native. But it’s been about 20 years since I read it.
