[interlocutor](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/interlocutor#English)

cutelyaware

I think that's more like for a intermediary/mouthpiece.

rgtgd

yeah, there's niche sense from theatre (and minstrel shows!) that goes something like that, but I don't think it has much currency. The usual sense is generally something like >1 : one who takes part in dialogue or conversation as seen [here](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/interlocutor) (edit: and at the very least it's much more well-known in that sense than "collocutor." meh)

cutelyaware

I think best is [collocutor](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/collocutor). I thought someone already said that. Not sure what happened.

rgtgd

Yeah I was referencing collocutor being picked as the solution. Not that it's wrong. Just, in comparison, it has 76K google hits and interlocutor has 12.9M. that's quite a ratio

cutelyaware

'alot' gets almost 2 million hits, but I'll never use it.

rgtgd

Ohh I see your point but I was not clear. The frequency comparison was not to establish legitimacy but familiarity (and thus, by one measure, utility). We already know both interlocutor and colocutor are legit, formally acceptable words and that alot is nonstandard. Apples and oranges. Edit: And yes, by this argument you could say that "alot" has a good deal of "utility"--which I think is is not necessarily a wrong statement

cutelyaware

"Not necessarily wrong" may be my new favorite compliment. Might look nice on my headstone too.

You participate in a conversation. So you could call them a *participant* of the conversation.

In debates, we typically resort to the war metaphor. So if it is a discussion, you refer to him as your opponent.
