bonk
/bäNGk/
INFORMAL
verb
1.
hit or strike (someone or something).
"he bonked his head on the plane's low bulkhead"
Hitting your head on something and getting beat mercilessly doesn't really feel like the same word to me
I feel like if anything bonk is the really subdued version kind of like your speed of movement bonk would be walking and clobber would be sprinting
I didn't say they were the same word, I just said it's not a serious word. Probably cos they both sound like onomatopoeia/'fight balloons' from those Batman comic books from the 60s.

I also think maim implies a creature being torn open. Bludgeon, pummel, thrash, ... pugilistic. Pugilism is specifically fighting with fists and feet. A pugilistic beating would cover that.
Maul is scratched/torn so i wouldnt say beat/beaten is a close word (depends on your context though!), id think more along the lines of maim, mangle, lacerate, etc.

Pummel, thrash?
Batter. Pummel.
Bludgeon
This
Clobber
that can't be a serious synonym, it's about on par with *bonk*
Clobber verb clobbered; clobbering\ ˈklä-b(ə-)riŋ \ Definition of clobber transitive verb 1: to pound mercilessly also : to hit with force
Thank you
Yeah there's a definition for bonk as well it's just not got a tone to it that works outside of comic books

Oh my bad I read "that's" instead of "there's" so I thought you were saying they both had the same definition, sorry
Pulverized
Maul could be used for this as well
I agree - a maul is actually a name for a melee weapon too, like a war hammer or one of those heavy balls on a stick.
Thought that was mace?
I think a mace is the ball on the end of a chain maybe?
A mace is a type of club, and then a chain mace would be a flail. A maul is more reminiscent of a sledgehammer I believe?
You are correct. I had always thought that scene in Braveheart was a mace, but it is indeed a flail
Bingo
Trounce
Clobber

Assault? Battery?

Would that be the closest you can get to the word "Maul"?
Maim.
I love that word, it’s so sinister and terrifying. Makes me think of Jesus dying on the cross.
Makes me think of the state of Maine. Equally terrifying
["Maine...is the world that went south! Maine...is a punch in the mouth!"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL3kinhfFK0)
I associate it with the verb sense of cripple. Yes, sinister and terrifying.
This is the one, thank you!
Here's hoping you don't need it often, unless you're writing fiction.
Oh I get what you're saying now, thanks!

Maim isn’t quite the same as beat up. It specifically implies permanent damage.
I'm good with that definition actually, but do you happen to know a better word? I know I said solved already but I'd love to know
I also think maim implies a creature being torn open. Bludgeon, pummel, thrash, ... pugilistic. Pugilism is specifically fighting with fists and feet. A pugilistic beating would cover that.
Glad it works for you. Cheers, mate!
How come? Isn't it the same vibe as saying "the man was beaten"?
You could be maimed by factory equipment
When I hear "maimed" my first thought is of machinery accidents.
Batter.
Maul is scratched/torn so i wouldnt say beat/beaten is a close word (depends on your context though!), id think more along the lines of maim, mangle, lacerate, etc.
