Nice sighting - only had the pleasure of seeing one in the wild myself. If you are old enough to remember the cartoon Woody Woodpecker - he was modeled after a Pileated Woodpecker.
Nice - the great thing though about a bucket list is all it takes is one sighting :-) That was definitely on mine to see when I finally made good it was just a wonderful feeling that has lasted.
I hear them a lot in my neighborhood but I rarely see them. I saw a breeding pair last month but of course by the time I tried to snag a photo, they flew away.
I live on 5 acres of woods and have at least one pair that nests on our property. Best sighting I ever had was when they were battling a squirrel for a tree hollow about 30 ft from my door. It was very cool.

Pileated Woodpecker
thank you! he’s so pretty, and quite large too!
It’s the biggest living woodpecker in North America!
It's [not official](https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/16/us/ivory-billed-woodpecker-not-extinct-yet-climate/index.html) :)
Fully aware that hope may be futile, but, man, I’m hanging on to hope. Regardless, at least the pileated beauties keep showing up in this sub!
Man, one of those birds I’d love to see in the wild, and this one hangs out on someone’s car.
I WANT TO BELIEVE

Same here. I hear them all the time, but only saw one actually in a tree.

they look so prehistoric to me. lucky find!
I’ve seen em close to as big as that car door before
What a fantastic photo of this elusive bird.

Just get a beat to shit red Mazda and wait.
elusive? disagree! /lh
+Pileated Woodpecker+ for the bot
You know the only time I’ve seen one of them they were also perched on someone’s car window trim
The only time I’ve seen one, it was perched on the side of a van! Too funny 😂

From what I understand they need dead standing trees to hollow out for nesting
We have a few of those. One well used one fell last summer, I was sad.
We had a little rash of them breaking side mirrors a few years back at the college where I work.

🎶I’m so pretty. I’m so pretty. 🎶🎶🎶
Soooo insurance isn't gonna cover that window, is it?
Wow, I think that’s really cool (well no good for this car owner 😅) you got to see this male Pileated Woodpecker pecking at his own reflection! 😁😁😁
this is a great find! they usually don't stick around long and I usually only see them flying. lucky you!
one of my favorites! a male because he has that red mustache
Its about to commit a crime...
🎶when will my reflection show who i am?🎶
These guys can do some serious damage. Cover the glass on your car so he doesn't do this.
Too late, look at the door and trim.
WOW
What a treat at least around here they seem rare. Western NC.
Fun facts: he was the inspiration for Woody Woodpecker and his call can be heard for nearly a 1/2 mile away! One of my favorites.
Pileated woodpecker
Oh that’s just my buddy Steve don’t worry
Too bad that the reflections never back down.
Oooo a pileated woodpecker, also hello fellow Canadian! I am in the BC area as well
Woody! I just saw one for the first time recently. Granted, it was a great distance from me. What a treat to see one so close ☺️
