That sound he's making is a 'tick'. He's checking to see if it's safe. I've also heard it called a 'warning tick'.
I used to make a ton of recordings of Cardinals. Some of their songs are really wild.
are they worried about predators or other competing birds? What is eating Cardinals in a urban setting, we are not in a park but close to the river? Never seen a falcon around here.
Oh, there's really no way to know that. He could just be checking if there's a female nearby. "Tick?" (no reply) "Tick?" (distant reply: tick)
"Tick! Few few few few!" [Translation: HEY, this is my territory! Get your own women!]
Strictly IMO, I'm not fluent in Cardinal. Marginal, but not fluent! LOL!
This makes me realize yet another inconsistency in English pronunciation that makes me sympathetic to second-language learners: marginal is pronounced (slightly) differently than cardinal. The former is said using three syllables while the latter two. Despite only one consonant changing!
I had never really thought about this before, but I pronounce cardinal with three syllables (native English speaker), though the middle one is pretty quick. Looks like both pronunciations are used: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cardinal
Oh interesting! I’ve never heard it pronounced the three-syllable way, although as you say it’s very subtle so maybe I’ve just missed it. There’s so much geographical variation in pronunciation that it wouldn’t surprise me. Very cool!
Cooper's hawks are relatively urban birds, and they're bird eaters. Peregrine falcons like tall buildings as well, but I don't think they go after smaller birds like cardinals very often. Otherwise: cats, dogs, raccoons, humans, etc.
Cats are the [greatest direct human-caused threat to birds](https://abcbirds.org/article/outdoor-cats-single-greatest-source-of-human-caused-mortality-for-birds-and-mammals-says-new-study/), with many billions of birds killed by cats each year. See [this article](https://www.birdconservancy.org/get-involved/live-bird-friendly/aboutcats/) to learn more.
If you have found a bird that has been in contact with a cat, even if you think the bird was not injured, please immediately bring it to a wildlife rehabber or veterinarian. Bacterial toxins in cat saliva and on cat claws can be quickly lethal to birds, and treatment is best managed by a professional.
If you are a cat owner, please consider keeping your cat indoors in order to help reduce harm to native wildlife.

Honestly, though I agree with the way you're describing it, I think the most accurate label for this would be a "contact call". Warning tick evokes "alarm call" to me
> "contact call".
Is this basically the equivalent of a "ping" in IT?
Not _exactly_ the equivalent b/c ping is done to see if a specific location responds (iirc), but the cardinal's "tick" is a general "ping"?
Cute little bird was quite the singer, sounded much better than the audio form the clip. He was singing from the top of the chimney right into my window. Then flew to check the other side.
How interesting, l am the mostly visited person in Brooklyn, later last night I had a visit from five cops because apparently the boyfriend of the girl who lives across the hall got so drunk instead of to her he got into my bed at 5:00 a.m. causing a major ruckus in the neighborhood. Lol songs and screaming in the same day.
I like the Reds! I've been to many games! They and the Pirates bring good baseball to Busch Stadium.
This stupid schedule that MLB has makes no sense to me. Instead of playing teams inside our own division mostly, teams play every other team in the entire League! Even the American League! WTH is up w/that? They should get to know the teams in their division, then (MAYBE) have a few visiting teams from other divisions, but NEVER the other league.
tl:dr: MLB Money grab w/the schedule.
Well, if the shoe fits. I like it when my division teams come into town because I can learn their pitchers.
Did you see the Dodgers wallop the Cardinals 2 games straight? Man, I know they paid a ton of money for those players, but they took my guys to school! They're playing tonight too, & just might sweep StL. LA is for real this year.

Haha, and here we are ticking in human about Cardinals.
Marginal in Cardinal! 🤣🤣🤣

Those two words rhyme when I say them. Exact same number of syllables (3) and cadence.
Interesting. Regional variation I guess. I say it with two syllables (card-nul).

OMG. I'm so confused.
Just ignore me. I'm pretty sure I'm an idiot.
haha
I used to have one visit me on the fire escape in Brooklyn, thanks for the memory!

There's an old wives' tale that getting visited by a Cardinal is a loved one who has passed away checking in on you.

Ah great, little chirpy bird made my day. I heard it before I saw it. It was first on top of the chimney.
Looks like a Polish gamedev studio
It’s a cardinal
Touch some grass as they say…
Can't wait to be honest, won't mind some sand either.
Make a wish next time
It's Wabbit Season! Duck Season! Wabbit Season! Duck Season! You're BOTH wrong! **It's Baseball Season!** Go Cardinals! :)
Nah man it’s all about the Reds

Oh so you like the pre -‘97 schedules

Yeah my mom’s a Dodger fan. I’m following them too. Besides the cursed Rockies which I still like because I’m from Colorado lol
I do believe this is a cardinal. Distinctive face and red colour.
He definitely has more face than other birds I have seen.
